Phil,
This list suggests that the 1998 race wasn't a 'Gold Cup'.

Thnaks John, but Wiki being the unreliable tool it is I am trying to get a definitve answer. My personal thought is that it wasn't but we want to print a list and it needs to be right for sure.Phil,

I thought that the Gold Cup was only revived in 2002.
EDIT: Derek Lawson in Sun, Rain...And Even Snow says that at the 1998 May Day BH Meeting the GT winners were presented with the Gold Cup.

Whatever happened to the Spring Cup? iirc.... and my Granny pushed me there in my bassinette on wheels, so my memory might be a little clouded, there were two non-champ meetings for F1: the Spring Cup (in the Spring) and the Gold Cup (in the golden season).

1971 is the last one I can think of, won by Pedro in the BRM. That was in early April with the Gold Cup in August. The following year Oulton just had the Gold Cup meeting, at the end of May.

Peter Higham's International Motor Racing Guide says it was - and also fills in the other gaps in that Wiki list.
The gap fillers, according to Higham
1995 - Alain Menu (CH) - Renault Laguna - Touring Cars
1997 - Alain Menu (CH) - Renault Laguna - Touring Cars
1998 - Steve O'Rourke (GB) / Tim Sugden (GB) - McLaren F1 GTR-BMW - GT
And
The only Spring Cup that Higham lists is 1967 won by Jack Brabham. He lists 1971 as the Rothmans International Trophy

There was a Spring Trophy meeting in April 1961, a Daily Express Spring Trophy in April 65, I think it was snowed off in 66, back in April 67, Guards Spring Cup in April 68, BRSCC Spring Cup in March 69, Rothmans/Daily Express spring Trophy April 71, then for some reason the Gold Cup appeared in May 72 as noted above.
So it was more patchy than I thought- for some reason the Express "always" sponsored an early-season meeting. Ah sweet memories of youth... not always reliable.
Pete.
