Why I can like my own posts?

I mean, love my posts, but it is not fair that I can 'like' them. I am talkong about 'like' button. It spoil the idea.

The likes don't even show up, now everyone with a like just has a blank area under their DP.

So 0 likes or no likes?

Basically instead of quoting and saying +1 you can like it but considering no one knows who liked it, as it doesn't show up, its rendered pointless. 

I don't think anybody will actually use it, so don't fret.

Another forum I'm on uses this deal that Autosport upgraded to. On that forum, if you click on your username in the top left of any page, then My Profile, one of the sections underneath your avatar is "Reputation", which lists in order of recent to distant all of the posts you have Liked, and all of your own posts that others have Liked. Not a groundbreaking feature but useful to see if anyone has enjoyed anything you posted lately. There is also a Reputation section of that board that lists everyone who has positive karma points and who has negative. It's a feature Autosport could mess around with a bit.

If enabled, you will see reputation options in the corner below each post. You may see an icon representing the reputation other members have given for that post, along with icons to give reputation. To give the post a positive reputation, click the icon or to give the post a negative reputation, click the icon. On some boards, you may see a button to Like content, such as this: If you choose to do this, it will show that you "Like" a certain post, and will also add a reputation point to that post.  You may only be able to give positive or negative reputation, and for some users you may not be able to give reputation at all.

 

 
Posts aren't showing their reputation, so it's a bit redundant.

I can see who has liked a post, and I thought everyone else did, but clearly not.  Can you not see that someone liked Wrighy's post #3 above?

My wife wanted to buy a pair of shoes. She claimed it had 800 "Likes".  I asked her how many "Don't Likes" it had. "Don't Like" isn't an option she informed me. To me that kind of renders the data useless if you only get one side.

Also just tried to multi-quote a couple of posts about the Like button and clearly I failed in my efforts. I am feeling like Caterham at the moment.

How about in his profile.  Click his name, and one of the options on the left that I see is 'likes'.  Can you see the post that someone has liked, even if you can't see who liked it?

If not, I'm not really seeing the value in the 'like this' option except perhaps as some sort of aid to moderation, though not even sure how it might help there.

I would never have guessed that I could find that by clicking on somebody's name. I like a specific post not because of who posts it, but because of its content - whoever may have written it. Now I click on it I can see that somebody has 'liked' him but not on which specific post. But the only way this 'liking' thing makes any sense is liking a specific post -for its meaningful content- and not the poster.

The feature is called reputation, so clearly the intent is about the poster. However "Like This" button is a bit misleading description it seems.

Depending on the nature of a forum this makes a lot of sense. In a technical forum for example, one easily can find helpful posts, Those posts are usually provided by a handful of users.

However in a forum like racing comments the value isn't as as useful, and rating a post in itself is more helpful...

But either way, these types of features IMO just open a can of worms and create more web traffic and thus slowing dowing page load times than I care for.

Miraculously I received a liked post today, however, the notification only points you to the thread of the post rather than the specific post. Seems pointless and broken.

I thought the same. Turns out you have to actually click on 'post you made' instead of the thread name.

Doesn't take away that this function is still pointless and broken.

I'm starting to like the 'like' button.

It feels like silent encouragement given or received that others agree with a point of view.  I don't feel the need to '+1' or add a random comment which essentially means that I agree, I simply click and they know it or they click, and I know that a person whose posts I respect likes what I had to say.

I do wonder what it would do to the forum dynamic if the likes were public so that you can see inline who has liked a post.  It might be a good thing.

It's a recent change to let everyone else see who has liked a given post. I like the liking thing - and the fact people can see it now -  too.

I didn't get the system at first (see above) because you indeed couldn't see publicly who liked the posts. So it was like sending a PM to someone saying 'I liked your last post!'. Since that's changed to public, I like the liking system.

Oh by the way, it's also no longer possible to like your own posts. Unsurprisingly, that wasn't the intention!

The difficulty is that I have always been able to see that information so can't see that it's changed for others.

I don't quite get the point scoring system. All the people who post daily are already "excellent" posters.

I post maybe once a month so I'm still "neutral". Shouldn't it have something to do with the ratio of likes and not just the amount of likes?

BTW, why am I still a "new member"? I've seen people who registered last month being "members".

Have I missed some secret initiation ceremony?
