Can someone explain the 'warning points' system? [merged]

Well I suppose there's little harm in discussing this one in public since you started it so I'm going to tell everyone what your transgression was...

 

You were admitted to the Paddock Club.

 

The system is used to document any changes to the posting rights of a member and that's your transgression.  You bad man.

I presume Vitesse2 is special due to joining a long time ago, or not too long ago or something like that. Still not sure that I get the answer, if everyone with access to the Paddock had a warning, would we not have had a lot more complaints over warnings. And should my total not be higher by one than what it is?

If you were granted access to the paddock club inder the old-old software, there's probably no note.

If you were granted access under the previous version there may or may not be, depending upon whether the gatekeeper chose to note the fact, or not.

We're an inconsistent bunch.

So if you're a moderator, can you give yourself some obscure number of points like -3.141592653589793?

Wouldn't agree that Pi is obscure.

Of course if you can think of an obscure number, it ceases to be obscure, so it's a pretty self defeating exercise.

What I mean is that the points system should be kept behind closed doors in that case.

Fine for the moderators to see it, but there should be a way so we can switch off being able to see our own.

If you're a polite, community-minded poster, you won't get points /warnings.

I'm trying to understand how I can have a warning 0 mark for making a comment re a Cooper Vincent my father raced in the period ex Sir Jack,when i mention the story of how my mother was sitting in it and my father was towing with his then new Studebaker Golden Hawk (now thats a rare car) when she over stepped the mark and the Coopers nose went under the Studebakers bumper.In the Historical research section.

I now stay out of that section.....so many stories so many tales of the 50s racing in Melbourne of certain ex GP cars.

The warning counts are only visible to the poster involved and the moderators. 0 means not any (rather than outrageous). Was it your first post since the new software arrived here? We all seem to like your posts.

I still don't see the point of such a flawed system.

From my point of view, I can see a permanent record of relevant communication with each member of the forum.  That means it's a couple of clicks for me to see that the user who is calling everyone who doesn't agree with him a 'retard' has form, so firmer action needs to be taken.  I can see this information even if it was another moderator in another forum who made the note.  From your point of view, you can see what action was taken, and when, for yourself only. 

So there is a 'point' to the system and arguably it's a good thing for people to be aware of their own score.  I hope you won't mind me telling everyone that you have '0' warning points but perhaps the lack ofinformation means you are not seeing how it might be of use to anyone?

Unquestionably the fact that you can see your own points is a compromise introduced by the new software and it has led to some confusion but otherwise I wonder which 'flaw' you're referring to.

You're right and I gave an explanation a little further up that we have been inconsistent in the past but it didn't matter so much because nobody got to see their warnings scores.  Behind the scenes I would see that someone had a warning logged, I'd look, and it would be for admission to paddock club.  Others didn't and were let in without a note.  The note was not part of the mechanism for letting people in but is a notification for other mods.

Now that people can see, we are taking a more consistent approach but obviously the thousands of people who have been let in up until the change in software could have had one or the other.  The same is true of the note we send to users if the contravene a rule.  Those notes are there for the member to see for as long as they are here so it needs to be clear.

I fully understand what you have said , both here and above, I was merely pointing out to ForeverF1 why I had asked the question.  It's all part and parcel of the way the software change has been handled.  To a layman 'customer' it appears that it wasn't fully thought through.

Interesting.  Apparently the moderators (or forum hosts) were not consulted before the change nor have they been given any guidance.  So: who was consulted, who did decide what changes were wanted, who briefed the tech guys?  Now they have made the changes, who knows how things should work?

Sounds exactly like the way that IT changes were implemented in the government department where I used to shirk.  

Maybe like the new F1 licence points, they should expire after a year....

How long do points last for?  I have one from 16th December 2009 (I was wronged, wronged!).  Points on my driving licence from that date would expire from Monday, does the site follow a similar system?

I have to admit after reading the last couple of pages I'm pretty gutted that points don't expire.

on another forum I frequent, one point there is removed for ever 60 or 90? days.  So you can keep your nose clean and earn a good record once again after you mess up.

Don't get me wrong I'm not complaining about this forum (heck no, I'm too scared of more points, I'm close to having enough for a set of glasses) but it would have been nice to be able to 'work off' your criminal record ;)
