From NationalSpeedSportNews is this obituary by Tim Kennedy:

Retired CRA sprint car driver Steve N. Howard, 61, died Dec. 16 at his Lakewood, Calif., home. He had battled serious health problems and was hospitalized several years ago for a liver problem.
He fought back and operated his long-time family business — So-Cal Racing Products in Downey. Steve was a reliable entrepreneur in the center of the Perris Auto Speedway with his truck and table of products since that track opened in 1996. The last race he attended at PAS was the USAC National Midget Turkey Night GP on Nov. 27, 2014.
Steve also was a regular spectator at the Industry Speedway Wednesday night speedway bike races from May through August. I had a chance to talk to Steve at length last August at Industry Speedway. He was the same Steve as always, upbeat and looking forward to watching the two-wheelers race that night. He attended these events with Mike English and his wife Lori.
Steve was born on July 25, 1953, youngest of three sons born to to the late Glenn and Patricia Howard. Gary, 64, and Mike, 62, also followed their racer father Glenn and raced sprint cars. Gary was a 1971 CRA rookie. Mike raced with CRA briefly in the 1970s and currently lives in North Carolina. Gary currently resides in Santa Clarita and builds engines for Honda Performance Development. He was present at Steve’s memorial service Jan. 23.
Steve had given power of attorney over his affairs to his close friend and fellow CRA sprint car driver Mike English when he was seriously ill and hospitalized. Steve had last Thanksgiving dinner with the English family before traveling to Perris to watch the TNGP. The English family maintained frequent contact with Steve over the years. When he could not be reached by telephone, Mike and Lori’s daughter Heather checked on Steve and found him sitting in a chair deceased. Steve was cremated per his wishes.
The memorial service for Howard was held in the Church of Our Fathers at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Cypress. More than 120 persons attended the somber, yet uplifting service conducted by celebrant Darrell McGowan. The retired minister officiates at funeral when called by Forest Lawn staff. He related facts about Steve’s life and passing. He said Steve and his wife Jaime had divorced many years ago, but remained friends. He added that Steve later fathered a daughter Katie and had tried to remain close to her.
McGowan invited attendees to come forward, state their names and speak about Steve. Driver Jim Tanner spoke first. CRA driver Dave Ondo spoke for himself and read a note driver Buzz Rose, an Arizona resident, sent him. SCRA publicist Robert Mayson related Steve’s racing accomplishments and said he was a fast and fierce driver. Ginny Abrahamson (a Howard family name before a split) gave family data. Steve’s cousin Linda, his former sister-in-law Joei Ryan (nee McCormick) said compassionate Steve had come to Arizona to console her after her husband died eight months ago. Joei and her father Ed McCormick (Steve’s former father-in-law) had come from Mesa, Ariz,. and joined Steve’s former wife Jaime in a front pew. Ed was a long-time CRA corner yellow flagman as were his late brothers Bruce and Bob.
Other speakers were J. C. Agajanian Jr., representing the Agajanian family, he said Steve always greeted him by saying “Hi Aggie.” Midget driver Jimmy Voitel recalled Steve spending time at the Voitel family farm in Iowa.
Interspersed during the memorial service were recordings of appropriate songs selected by the family. They were: “Remember Me” by Tim McGraw; “Go Tell It on the Mountain” by Vince Gill; “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston; “Goodbye My Friend” by Linda Ronstadt, and “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban.
The printed memorial card had a color photo of Steve in his So-Cal driving uniform and at speed in his No. 94 sprint car. On the back of the Thomas Kinkade card was: “Afterglow – I’d like the memory of me to be a happy one. I’d like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I’d like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways. Of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I’d like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun. Of happy memories that I leave when life is done.”
Attendees filed out of the chapel by passing mounted photos of Steve at various stages of his racing career, a remains box, and floral wreaths.
Present were Mike and Lori English, Rip and Becky Williams and their sons Cody and Austin, Sleepy and Erin Tripp, Stan and Diane Atherton, Tommy and Jeannie Hunt and son Tony, Lee and Lori James, John Redican, Jimmy Oskie, Steve Ostling, Tony Jones, Damion Gardner, Ed Hudson and racer son Jerry, Tom Downing, Gene Ellis, Cal Smith, Jake Swanson, plus speakers J. Voitel, D. Ondo and J. C. Agajanian with his wife Franci. Focus midget/speedway bike racer Courtney Crone, 13, and her father Jack also attended and said Steve had encouraged her racing.
Others present included: timer/scorer Dick Hindman, sponsor Paul Wiessner, Robert Mayson, Wendi James Loveren, Anne Wilkerson, Janie (Wilkerson) Rolfson, Renee (Kruseman) Kiser (Cory’s mom), Leanne Scheetz, and longtime fan Arlene Fernandez. Persons had sandwiches and soft drinks during the reception and swapped memories of Steve and racing at Ascot Park. Hosts were Steve’s brother Gary and the English family. They deserve accolades for their friendship, devotion and loyalty to their friend Steve Howard. RIP.

[An extended version is there.]

BTW, what puzzles me is this

Abrahamson (a Howard family name before a split)

According to the California Birth Index Steve's brother Gary Howard was born on 17 April 1950 as Gary Glenn Howard, his brother Mike Howard was born on 14 May 1952 as Michael Howard Abrahamson, and Steve Howard himself was born on 25 July 1953 as Steven N. Abrahamson, all by the same mother, Ms. Wininger.

What is the explanation for the respective family names?

I never understood that either. In addition, Gary G. raced as Gary Abrahamson for a while, but his father was always Glenn Howard during that time (as a car owner). Can you find out who Ginny Abrahamson is? Or, maybe Jim Thurman can chime in here?

I have no idea. Perhaps a stepfather situation?  I attended races at Ascot when he raced as "Gary Abrahamson" and remember when it came out that he was, in fact, Glenn Howard's son.  I don't recall any more explanation being given aside from it being "an alias", though perhaps there might be some additional detail somewhere in my collection of regional racing newspapers.

But, I'll tell you right now, the odds of me digging through those is quite unlikely, unless I can get them scanned, which no one seems able to assist with.

ORC had a couple of posts on its Facebook page last night with pictures of the Darvi race car. The reason for the posts was that Dick Harvey, the designer of the Darvi died earlier this week. Sorry, can't find any more information than that at present.

I have just heard that Mike Tighe, a very talented race driver of the 1960s, died earlier this year.  Mike, a West Australian farmer, started attrarting attention driving a Fiat 1500 saloon, and was given a drive an an Elfin Catalina F Junior, specially bought for him by Don Reimann, himself a driver (and specially a race car builder) of note. It proved a perfect match, Mike was a natural in this small single-seater, right through the dying days of Caversham and into early Wanneroo Park meetings.

By the late 60s the car was obsolete and uncompetitive, and would have been even more uncompetitive without Mike behind the wheel.

After Mike retired, the Elfin went though various hands and finished up on the other side of Australia. Early this year a Western Australian collector bought it, and is in the process of retoring it to the appearance and livery of Mike Tighe's day.  The new owner, and and ailing Mike Tighe, had a long talk of old times, and Mike was pleased to hear his old car was back home.

RIP Mike Tighe.

This a short notice to announce the sudden death of Andy Sutcliffe on 13th July 2015 at 5:30pm. He was best known as a Formula 3 driver in the period 1969 through to 1973, most notably and successfully in the '72 and '73 seasons in a GRD, and raced alongside the likes of Nicki Lauda, Tony Brise, James Hunt, etc. His career started in 1967 in Ginetta sports cars and he continued after F3 into F2, and was an entrant with RAM Racing at the British GP in a March Formula 1 where he failed to qualify. he retired from racing and began several ventures, the most successful being a bamboo growing business in Kent.

I was his mechanic and close friend throughout his racing career until 1971 when we went our separate ways. I managed to catch up with him at his home in Kent back in 2010, but did not see him again. His funeral is in Charing, Kent on Monday 24th August.

Really sorry to have seen this.  He was clearly extremely capable - not only racing against the likes of Williamson, Pryce, Brise and co., but often beating them. Had he been in a smaller, more concentrated team than the extended GRD (Group Racing Services) team perhaps he would have been more consistently on the podium.

I rated him very highly.  There were some very good drivers in Formula 3 in the early seventies.  You had to be quick to even race alongside the likes of Vandervell, Walker, Trimmer, Maskell, Leclere, Hunt, Evans, Jones, etc., etc.

On a French forum of all places I read that Roger Keele has died at the age of 70.

He raced in Formula 3 in the late 1960s & early 1970s. From googling I learned that his racing career was cut short when he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. In recent years he lived in a nursing home just outside Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

Is anyone able to find out his life dates?

Sad news.  :(

I remember Andy Sutcliffe climbing the podium on the demanding street course of the Pau Formula 2 Grand Prix in 1974, third place behind Depailler and Laffite. He brilliantly drove his pale blue and red March 742-BMW entered by Brian Lewis.

Sad news. Was he related to Peter Sutcliffe of 1967 Ferrari 330P4 memory?

Brian Foley obituary from the Sunday Independent by Mike McCarthy:

Irish motoring and motorsport's great recorder
Brian Foley, who died earlier this month, aged 82, was a wonderful motoring and motor sport chronicler in Ireland over the last 60 years. His magazine Auto Ireland recorded all the great motorsport dramas of the last half-century - from the incredible ascent of Derek Daly from Formula Ford to F1 in 13 months in 1978, to Billy Coleman's memorable third place in the 1979 European Rally Championship, as well as all new road car launches, from the 1968 Jaguar XJ6 to the 2015 Ford Focus.
He was an avid Grand Prix fan who interviewed many of the greats, including Enzo Ferrari, at a meeting arranged by Joe Gantly of Fiat in Maranello in 1978.
Brian Foley was born on October 30, 1932 into a business family who ran a general store and pharmacy on Tullow Street in Carlow. He had two brothers, Joe and the late Jack. Brian went to Terenure College as a boarder.
Brian worked in the shop in Carlow initially, but in his spare time he competed in test trails in MG Midgets, the NSU Prinz 4 and other cars. He even built his own Test Special with Liam Maddox.
Brian's fine photographs of the young hot shoes of his day in action at the Dunboyne race (1958-1967) are a testimony to his skill with the camera and were recently reissued in a book by Eddie Fitzgerald.
Robins Rennicks, Frank Keane, Michael Smurfit, John Watson, Rosemary Smith and others were part of a trailblazing troupe whose racing exploits Brian brought to the Irish public.
He became 'Eire correspondent' for Autosport in the early 1960s and contributed until recent years.
Rallying in the mid-1960s was capturing the public imagination, with Rosemary Smith's wins in the Tulip Rally and Paddy Hopkirk's Monte Carlo Rally victory bringing the sport into every home in Ireland via the newspapers and RTE.
In 1968, Stuart Cosgrave and others opened Mondello Park and the Formula 2 successes of Ken Fildes, Brian Cullen and John Watson helped Brian get his monthly magazine Auto Ireland launched in 1968.
Auto Ireland covered all branches of motorsport - rallying, racing, karting, mudplugs, sporting trails and bikes. It also covered new cars and was the authoritative guide on which new car to buy and the new developments among the manufacturers and distributors.
In 1969, Brian married near neighbour Mary Schwer and together they built Auto Ireland into Ireland's most successful car magazine - it is still being published very successfully today within the Harmonia stable of Norah Casey, with the wholehearted support of Chris Hanlon of First Citizen Finance and others.
Brian and Mary attended all the major new model launches and were respected ambassadors for Ireland in the boardrooms of the major car companies. He met Henry Ford II and visited Japan to see the Toyota system in operation.
Brian chronicled the progress of the racing Irish in the UK - then as now, the heart of worldwide motorsport. The stellar cluster of Derek Daly, supported by Derek McMahon, David Kennedy, supported by John Hynes, Michael Roe and Eddie Jordan made the mid-1970 and 1980s a great era for Brian's weekly Irish Independent newspaper column and Auto Ireland.
Brian took his work seriously and he had huge influence, which he used well. The late John Crossle recounted in Plum Tyndall's magnificent book Hidden Glory how an article in the US magazine Road & Track in 1975 prompted a US race school owner to come to see the Holywood factory and take on the US agency, making the Crossle the biggest-selling Formula Ford car in the world.
Brian and Mary adored their daughter Sinead and in recent years he loved to recount to the motoring press the progress of their grandson Ronan in canoeing. He missed Mary greatly when she died in 2012, but persevered until a brain tumour led him to Naas Hospital, where he died on August 10.
The incredible turnout at his funeral of luminaries from the motor industry, every discipline of motorsports, photographers, the media and friends from North and South was a testimony to the esteem in which Brian Foley was held. The journalist Brian Byrne's eloquent eulogy noted the dozens of industry leaders who attended or sent condolences to the family.
Brian Foley was a founder member of The Irish Motoring Writers Association in 1975 and was active in the association until his health started to fail earlier this year.

And a link to the eulogy delivered by Brian Byrne at Brian Foley’s Requiem Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart & St Brigid, Kilcullen, on Wednesday 12 August 2015.

Yes, Andy's funeral was considerably delayed due to financial problems reported by his surviving partner, Sherrine. I took it upon myself to ask old friends if they could help with the costs, and one very generous and sympathetic old friend (and former girlfriend) volunteered to foot the whole bill. It took a lot of juggling with dates to finally get Andy a proper send-off towards the end of August, and at least he had a dignified exit.

His drink problem was a major contributor to his final demise, not to mention blighting his final years. The report on his drunk-driving charge had a sequel: he drove while disqualified, he was nicked, and according to the original suspended sentence, he was sent to prison for about 6 - 12 months. After this he became something of a recluse, and I tried to persuade him to come to a historic F3 meeting at Brands Hatch with the other driver I worked for, Barrie Maskell, but he could not be persuaded to leave his house. It was quite a reunion, with Bev Bond, Harry Stiller, John Miles, Tony Trimmer, etc., and I'm sure Andy would have enjoyed it.

The last time I saw him was in 2010 in the company of another former mechanic Glen Waters, and the late journalist, Justin Haler. Andy got steadily more drunk and abusive, and my final act was to help him out of the bath into which he had fallen in his stupor! I delivered a short eulogy at the funeral, and I tried to concentrate on his successful racing seasons rather than his sad later years. He was such a colourful character, very much in the James Hunt mould, all sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll, and I was lucky to have known him during his hey-day.

What an interesting albeit sad to read response that is F3Wrench. Thank you for this and breaking the news in the first place.

Because I am who I am and like to have this information... do you know where Andy died - you've put everything else other than that in the above? Was it at his home (Pluckley?), or in Ashford or somewhere else altogether?

Very sorry to hear this.  Here is a video interview Peter Lipskis and i did with him at Legends of Riverside in 2010:

Another Riverside legend gone.

Also, Skip Jones, Robert Barg, Lawrence Green, and I shared a golf cart with him at Monterey in 2012:

Richard,

He died on his bed, in his home in Pluckley, at 5:30pm, This had also been the home of his parents - his illustrious and highly decorated father, Air Commodore Walter Philip Sutcliffe, and his lovely mother Marjory. They are both buried in the little churchyard in Pluckley. The house was bequeathed to the RAF Benevolent Fund to whom the ownership of the house passes on Andy's death, but whether this means that his surviving partner Sherrine will have to leave the house or not, I do not know.

I spent many hours at the house, not least while working on his Ginettas and F3s, often overnight, and knew the place and his family really well. It does look very run down these days, which is hardly surprising as Andy was not really the DIY type. He spent a lot of time on his digger in the garden, but it occasionally ended up in the huge pond when he'd had a few!

Hope this helps, sorry to bang on a lot, I just can't believe he's gone, despite having little contact with him since the heady days of 1967 -71  :well:

Which is what I meant (and that Andy Sutcliffe wasn't related).

The 1000 cc F3 Historic Racing Association remembers Roger Keele.

After a long illness, Roger Keele, a former 1000cc F3 driver, sadly passed away on Wednesday 29th August age 69.

Rogers motor sport career started at the age of 13.in the first officially recognised kart race on November 8th 1959 at Lakenheath in Suffolk. He came second behind Graham Hill. He continued in karting becoming known along with Bev Bond as one of the Bultaco boys after the successful kart engine of that name.

1967 He raced a F4 Matador constructed by his father.

1968 His father Mike rebuilt the F3 Cooper type 83 owned by Alan McKechnie. In this car he broke the lap record at Cadwell Park.

1969 Roger was asked to drive Dr Joe Ehrlich Formula 3 EMC. He also raced a Merlyn Formula Ford for Motor Racing Enterprises during the year.

1970 He drove the works development F3 Palliser and again he was a man to be watched with a 2nd place at Castle Coombe and a 4th place at the Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting.

1971 Roger raced a Formula Ford Crosslé.

1972 He was back in Formula 3 with a Lotus 69 for a team called Trabisco Kee. At Monaco his number one team mate, Barrie Maskell crashed his own car and then went on to crash Roger’s car. Shortly after this the team folded.

1973 He did a few races in Alan McKechnie’s March 723/4.

1974 His last race was at Mallory Park in a March 723. He then retired having been diagnosed with a debilitating illness.

Roger was one of those drivers who had the talent but never got the breaks to fulfil his dreams of Formula One.

Since August 29th wasn't a Wednesday but August 19th was I think the date is a typo and Roger Keele in fact passed away on 19 August 2015.

(I think his father was Michael Henry Keele, 1920 - 2001. Maybe someone can verify this.)

Mark Ward passed away August 28, 2015 at age 84 in his hometown of Fresno, California. Ward raced hardtops in Central California in the 1950s and continued into their evolution as super modifieds in the 1960s. His crowning achievement in racing came when he won the 1963 Gold Cup at Capital Speedway in West Sacramento. The race was a grueling, 200-lap grind over the 1/2 mile dirt track and Ward bested a 63-car field of the region's top super modified drivers for the victory.

Brian John Lemon, a prominent Western Australian Volkswagen Beetle racer and rally driver in the late 1950s and early 60s, and later a hugely talented scratch-builder of ship and boat models, died in July aged 82.

One of his proudest scratch-builds was a superb model of the Krait, the fishing boat used by Australian Z-Force soldiers to infiltrate behind Japanese lines during WW2.

Patrick Howitt (1945-2015) obituary by the BRDC:

We regret to report the death on Wednesday 18 November of Patrick Howitt at the age of 71. As owner and chairman for many years of the Nottingham-based John Howitt Group, a printing business which had been started by his great-great-grandfather in 1837 printing tickets and timetables for Thomas Cook, Patrick will be particularly remembered for his enthusiastic support of Donington Park in the years immediately after ‘Tom’ Wheatcroft re-opened the circuit in 1977. His passion for fast cars and motor racing initially led him to support local drivers Frank Sytner (in Formula Ford 2000 and Sports 2000) and Gary Ferriman in the Clubmen’s Formula. Under the Foxwood Sytner Racing banner Frank also contested the 1977 Formula 3 race supporting the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the circuit where 20 years earlier Patrick reckoned he first caught the motor racing bug when his father took him to the Daily Express International Trophy. Frank may have finished a modest 15th in that F3 race but the following year in a Howitt Racing Lola T492 he was Sports 2000 Champion.

Through the late Robert Fearnall, Patrick was introduced to Kenny Acheson whom he supported through Formula Ford 1600 and Formula 3 into Formula 2, Kenny losing the 1980 British F3 Championship by just two points to Stefan Johansson in a dramatic final round at Thruxton. Martin Brundle and Russell Spence, and on two wheels Ron Haslam and Niall McKenzie also benefited from Patrick’s endlessly enthusiastic and financially beneficial support. In the 1990s Patrick sponsored Damien Faulkner in Formula Vauxhall Junior, the Irishman winning the 1995 Winter Series, and also Carl Breeze.

In 1999 Patrick sold his company to Waddington but, far from retiring, energetically pursued his various other interests which included a Czech-Hungarian restaurant with a reputation for jazz. In recent years he had been living in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, becoming involved in property development. In the words of Kenny Acheson, Patrick was ‘warm hearted, very sociable, kind, generous beyond belief and always the perfect English gentleman’. That is how he will be remembered by all those who knew him and who will for ever retain fond memories of a true motor racing benefactor.
