He doesn't mention a price. Telephone number in the advert is: 01287 623718.

Ouch  !

(I bitterly regret flogging my programme collection a few years ago, which went back to 1965 and included 12 Race of the Years - but so glad I kept every programme that I was in!).

The Road Race bug bit BIG TIME, one Fri evening, Sept 1979 on the approach road up past the Mere to pits/Mere hairpin. Dad dropped me off at uncles house fa w/end. Uncle Ernist always went to the "Mount"......and was to take me fa the Gold Cup on the Sunday. After tea on Fri I walked to the Mount to "have a look around". Half an hour later I'm walking up the hill towards the pits.......n theres a big Honda race bike getting bumped of down the hill.........it exploded into life about level with me,100yrd further down, 3 point turn n back up the hill..............on the back wheel, past a "stunned" 15yr old whos chin was on the floor.........rider with a thumbs up fa said "stunned" 15yr old. (Turned out to be Tony Rutter) Walking up n down from Mere (always be "Mere") n start finish past the pits I was absolutely awe-struck by the sounds/sights of the busy pits etc!!!
Sat saw me on the Mount by about 07.30.........busting fa things to get goin........Croz wheelying every where is my 1st (and lasting) memory of Road Racing!!!!! Sunday saw me back with Uncle......filling my head with Sheene/Ago etc stories......n that was it..... the bug had bitten deep!!!

I raced at Scarborough only twice,

Not sure which years?

Over the hump at least that is what we called it,

i got it wrong and was shot through the screen on my 350 hit the front wheel and was bounced back into the saddle, what skill!,

Bernie Frost did the exact same maneuver in front of me at Brands hatch Bemsee meeting before going on to win the race.

Anyway i digress, I came round on the next lap about 50mph slower  and went over the hump, bump whatever  it was and the crowd clapped, glad THEY enjoyed it :)

Picture  of some unknown going over the hump thingy

Yes , at the most.

In motocross since the recession started there as been a switch from motor-homes to VW transporter and other similar sized vans.

Is the same thing happening in road racing?

I have only been to one club meeting in the last few years and a couple of GP's and obviously the GP's are not suffering from recession.

Not sure , iv'e been hiring a medium size van , for a weekend , about £85 , and using the nearby Premier Inn or similar for the 3/4 times a year , a lot cheaper than buying and running a van ...........................do miss the evening paddock banter , mind  :well:

I first visited Olivers mount in 1951 & most years up to 63. from 59 to 63 I raced there. 2nd to Dan Shorey in '61 sharing fastest lap riding a 198cc Ducati to Dans 250 NSU Sportmax. 1962 con rod broke on penultimate lap on 250 Aer Macchi cruising in 2nd again to Dan & aiming to pounce on last lap. 1963 again on Aer Macchi, Tommy Robb on Factory Honda Twin, German Gunter Beer on a Honda 4. finished 3rd in heat (4th fastest overall) having started from last. My goggles shattered on my timed lap in practice. As fastest 18 from heats went into final I expected to be 4 on grid but no, I was on 18. Argued with Claxton but he threatened to kick me out. Tried to "jump start but hit the guy in front & fell off, picked up the bike & started again. Within 6 of the12 laps I was 2nd to Robb having passed the 4 cyl bike. Lap after lap I closed the gap, got almost alongside at Mount but risked taking us both out so had to settle for 2nd. The final kick in the teeth was being credited with sharing fastest lap with my mate Tommy on the last lap, despite closing 25 yards in that last lap, Having to roll off down the hill because there was no way past.

The best circuit I ever road on & the whole race was televised & Murray Walker was apparently jumping up & down.

The final thing to mention, can anyone give a clue where the archives to ABC TV are kept, because I have never seen myself on film.

After that season I retired

I found this fantastic photo collection quite by accident the other night, including a sequence from Mick Grant and John Cooper's prang over the jump in 1972, of which which I didn't know any photo's existed.

I hope the owner doesn't mind us sharing them here

Brilliant Paul - what a find  !

More than a few gems on there - such as Croxford on a two-stroke! (500 Tee-Mill Kawasaki).

How about sending him an invitation to join us? (The photographer I mean, not Croxford - there again, why not invite Crox too ).

Not sure how to contact him Barry, I've just had a look but can't see anything on his page, but that could be because I don't have a flickr account, If you are able to contact him please feel free.

.......And likewise Croxford, I think he is around on the net and has posted on youtube before, but again I don't have a youtube account myself, but it would be worth dropping him a note.

This is what I saw as I was zapping through them very quickly! (In the Mallory album). Although it was captioned "Croxford" it's obviously not him  !

Have you looked at the other albums apart from Scarborough Paul? The Cadwell album is very good!

Seems I was right first time, because if you Google "croxford" and "kawasaki" - a Morton's photo of Croxford on that very bike will come up! (I didn't want to reproduce the photo here and risk the wrath of Mortons!). Then when I looked a second time, I thought it was an "imposter" with a Croxford helmet because I didn't think it looked much like him!

Well there you go  !

PS: Parading, rather than racing I think, which explains it!

Is anyone here on Facebook (Paul and myself aren't believers!) - if so, perhaps they can try and make contact with this chap and invite him to join us? (Or at least get his permission to use his pictures). He is Keith Nunns from Wakefield.

I'm pretty certain Croxford did ride an H1R in the early 70's, around the same time he had a Seeley framed BSA 3 and if I remember correctly those were the leathers he wore.  This was just before he got the ride with the JPN team.

Some fantastic Cadwell shots there!!

How nice to see the hairpin and Barn Corner as I remember them, with the cottage and the Barn still there, when I used to Marshal around there in the 70's we used to open the gate to let the bread van and postman deliver to the cottage between the morning practice sessions.

Robin, I bought this H1R at the end of 1972 from Reg Thomas of T-Mill Tours. He also had a driving school in Clapham and sponsored Dave on it. Ex-Martin Carney; Dave hated it.

So did I.

Hi :) I run the Oliver's Mount unofficial Fan page on Facebook, we have close to 6k group members (since I created the group in Sept 2014) and over 5k pictures (from 60's to present day). We have members who raced there past/present, toggers, fans etc etc

Please could I share some of the pictures and stories from this thread? or you may wish to join us.

Many Thanks

Joel

p.s. I found those Keith Nunns pics (I approached him and he allowed me to publish them in my group, he doesn't do FB) ;)

Hi Joel ,

Since my earlier post of last March on this thread, I have reluctantly joined the dreaded Facebook - purely for the motorcycle racing nostalgia content (of which there is much!). However, I have in no way abandoned my loyalty to this excellent forum and nothing would please me more than to see it flourish again :) !

So I will certainly have a butchers at your group on FB - and if you are ever in touch with Keith Nunn, please pass on my appreciation of his photographs!

Cheers,

Barry.

Hi Joel, i'm sure you would be most welcome to share any of this thread with the facebook group.

I don't do FB myself but i'd be delighted, as would many others, if likewise you could post some of the FB group photo's over on this thread too.

PS, my first TZ came from Dowsons in Scarborough, and was the ex Mike Dowkes TZ350A

I may have mentioned some of these memories before but I've been a regular at Olivers Mount since '72...Saarinen & Ago in '72, Barry Scully's big crash over the jump, not sure when, '73 ish ? Jamie Whitham wrestling the Durex Suzuki to win '88 ish ?  John Webb & Geoff Barry's battle..can't remember when but it was '70s.

Bad memories too, Phil Haslam's fatal in '74, Steve Layton's in July'76  R.I.P.    On the whole enjoyable days.

Greg

P.S did a few laps last Summer on my mates MV 800 triple, pretending I was Ago
