Not sure where to make this comment but how times have changed and with it the whole level of intensity, and here lies the problem. Given that now its go rather than show and so, as has been suggested on the Lotus 49 thread, maybe it is time that the 120% rule was applied.
Time for Nostalgia, and to illustrate what it was like, a relaxed event and I was so, so lucky to do it then and not now.
In the early days the Historic Race was a support race to the GP and held the day before. It was organised by Uwe Hucke (& I think financed by him) and I was invited in 1983 as a replacement! Cars were housed in the Hall du Centenaire. Uwe asked where I was staying and I confessed that I and the two with me had a tent and sleeping bags so were going to look for a camp site. Immediately I was invited to camp in his rose garden, apparently also camping in the garden and garage loft were the Pilkingtons and the Morris'. The swimming pool had a shower and loo so we didn't have to invade the house which was high on the hillside with commanding views over Monaco!
Staying in the house was Phil Hill and Stirling Moss. On the Wednesday night Uwe invited all drivers and support crew out to supper at a lovely Italian restaurant out of town. Maybe about 30 of us went and that set the tone for the weekend. Very much a relaxed add on event and that to my way of thinking is highly appropriate for a track like Monaco. The bar is now set very high, and therefore driving ability to qualify perhaps becomes more important.
Here is the result sheet, the very suave Count Hubertus Doenhoff had entered a A6GCS but did not arrive so they simply gave me his place. Quite a small grid really!
