I am thinking of going to the Monaco Historique event next year.  I would appreciate any hints and tips that TNFers can offer based on their personal experience.

I am thinking of taking the train from London to Nice.  Then I need to decide where to stay.  I expect Monaco to be expensive but am thinking about Nice or Menton as they are both within easy reach of Monaco by train.  Has anyone done that?  Any thoughts on hotels?  I've travelled along that line before and been to Monaco three times in the past but never to see racing.

Once there, how easy is it to move around?  Do you have to book a seat in a grandstand and stay there?  Is it advance booking only or can you buy tickets on the day(s)?  Are the public admitted to the paddock area?  Is there a charge for that?

Any other tips or info would be much appreciated.  Thank you.

There are several cheap hotels very near to Nice railway station, from which you can ride along the beautiful Cote d'Azure to Monaco. These hotels are hardly five star but they are convenient.

Up to 2012 paddock entry was unrestricted and was free. Whether that remains the case I cannot say.

We always buy grandstand tickets beforehand but there is plenty of space in some grandstands all weekend although smaller ones like Casino Square may well sell out earlier than race weekend.

Tickets available here:

http://www.formula1monaco.com/

I've never had to buy a grandstand ticket as I have always been fortunate enough to obtain media accreditation, but I would say that staying in Nice is no problem and much cheaper than Monaco. Rail service is good and quick.

In 2012, when I went to see the GP Historique I've stayed in an Hotel called La Fiancée du Pirate in Villefranche-sur-Mer. Very nice view of the sea, friendly family atmosphere and not very expensive (of course, this is always subjective). Plus, as I was traveling in a car it had the advantage of being already in the road to Monaco - about 25 minutes from parking in the principality (only drawback, the absence of a restaurant nearby). Saw tickets being sold on the day and there were plenty of seats available in the grandstands (weather was not very promising and become atrocious at the end).

Menton's even cheaper and closer by rail. Has the advantage (to me) that you can meet friends for a meal in Monte Carlo and still get back to the hotel at a reasonable hour

In 2008 and 2012, we stayed "next door" to Monaco, in Cap d'Ail, at the Pont Royal, which is a Pierre et Vacances long term stay.  Then, for one euro per day each way, we caught the bus along the waterfront.  Worked out well.  The bus runs between Nice and Menton.  We booked grandstands in advance for the weekend, different ones for Saturday and Sunday.  We stayed in our grandstands each day, although the Anthony Noghes stand we were at on Sunday in 2012 was near the paddock, so I slipped over there for a bit that day.  However, we couldn't see as much from the Noghes stand, and there was no video screen visible from there. Cars start arriving on Wednesday, so you can tour the paddock starting then.  Last time, they had some practice on Friday afternoon, so you could try other grandstands.

I hate labouring on about this but I am still unable to get to the on-line ticketing website.

I just don't understand why it doesn't load up.

We had the same problem last time.  How was it resolved then?

Sadly, I won't be coming this time.  I'm thinking I should come to Goodwood for the Revival one year !

Dear Barrry,

in 2012 I refused to install SILVERLIGHT, and told that to the ACM. I send a simple mail to the ticket office and they were more than helpful. They returned a pdf which you can fill in and then return to them...

Good news, the ticket problem is solved.

My Dutch neighbour, who is a bit of a computer whizz-kid, suggested that some organisations around the world are very suspicious of connections that originate from Malta.  So, they will not connect to them.  The way to overcome it is to use a VPN connection, which I already have on my laptop, to fool the required website into thinking that the request comes from somewhere else.

I 'pretended' to be connecting to the Monaco site from London and, hey presto, connection made and tickets are ordered.

Something like that. The driver is wearing the helmet design of Count Manfredo Rossi di Montolera who has raced a gorgeous Brabham BT42 in recent years. Here is a link to a photo of it (not mine): https://www.flickr.c...l-16305888@N00/

Hi from a fellow enthusiast!,

Together with 2 good friends from New Zealand, we went (from Sydney and NZ) over to the Monaco historics 2 years ago and we stayed in Menton at the: Hotel club Vacanciel Menton

Whilst it's not a 5 star hotel, it was just excellent! It was clean , had a laundry, and the service was 100% .The little dinng room was a quant place to eat breakfast.

The train station is a 5 min walk from ther hotel and the trip to Monaco only takes about 12...15 Mins max.

We ate dinner one night at a cafe right on the water's edge at the bottom of the main street in Menton, the food and wine were magnifique! Warm balmy night , great looking women... .aaaaah .....it was tough !

Beware of pickpockets....!

I had my very good camera stolen, whilst helping friend to get all of our luggage off the train when we first arrived.

An astute security guard quickly phoned ahead to the station security at Monaco... and they caught the thief red handed ...and I got my camera back!

Cheers,

Dave W

I remarked at the weekend that Rudolf's Lotus 18 is the closest to the original BRP/Laystall green compared to all the other light green cars.

thanx for the compliment

I drove Micheal Hibberd quite mad, looking for the perfect hue of Laystall Green.......

Nice to see that this gets appreciated

I had a very good weekend, especially in the Lotus 18

In the March it was, my first time at Monaco in a 3 litre car, so built it up carefully

we fitted the largest possible mirrors, 2 years ago, as a safety precaution

Rather a shame that certain other folks did not also fit large mirrors.... and look into them from time to time. ;)

Not sure where to make this comment but how times have changed and with it the whole level of intensity, and here lies the problem. Given that now its go rather than show and so, as has been suggested on the Lotus 49 thread, maybe it is time that the 120% rule was applied.

Time for Nostalgia, and to illustrate what it was like, a relaxed event and I was so, so lucky to do it then and not now.

In the early days the Historic Race was a support race to the GP and held the day before. It was organised by Uwe Hucke (& I think financed by him) and I was invited in 1983 as a replacement! Cars were housed in the Hall du Centenaire. Uwe asked where I was staying and I confessed that I and the two with me had a tent and sleeping bags so were going to look for a camp site. Immediately I was invited to camp in his rose garden, apparently also camping in the garden and garage loft were the Pilkingtons and the Morris'. The swimming pool had a shower and loo so we didn't have to invade the house which was high on the hillside with commanding views over Monaco!

Staying in the house was Phil Hill and Stirling Moss. On the Wednesday night Uwe invited all drivers and support crew out to supper at a lovely Italian restaurant out of town. Maybe about 30 of us went and that set the tone for the weekend. Very much a relaxed add on event and that to my way of thinking is highly appropriate for a track like Monaco. The bar is now set very high, and therefore driving ability to qualify perhaps becomes more important.

Here is the result sheet, the very suave Count Hubertus Doenhoff had entered a A6GCS but did not arrive so they simply gave me his place. Quite a small grid really!

Alan Cox you have hit the nail on head.Times have changed.

Compare the lap time of C this year with Martin Morris effort and he was a decent driver.

It's called development but what it has to do with Historic Racing defeats me

I had the feeling that Paddins had it totally under control but on the penultimate lap the Alfa went straight over the chicane and gained probably about 50 yards.

Had it been a Grand Prix it would have incurred a drive-through penalty or somesuch but this time it just put the race out of Paddins reach.

Thanks, Barry. That's as good a reason as any why I didn't notice. :)

I did leaf through all the results sheets, though, but I must have glanced at the qualifying results for this one. That's the trouble with reporting and photographing at the same time. :|

Anyway, Peter, thanks for pointing that out to me. You just saved me from two gaffes in a couple of magazine reports...

No problems, proof readings one of the hats I wear!

A few people have queried why the Bugattis weren't competitive, in VSCC racing don't the quicker ones usually run with the Alfas, any thoughts?

Quality of drivers?

That is the obvious answer but (at least) a couple of those who "didn't qualify" are quick in other makes.

Just had a look at the results and wonder if the answer is simply that Alfa is a particularly quick example (why?), the other one was 20 seconds a lap slower which puts it with the Bugattis.
