Hi, Wondering if John Brindley is around?

English born, lived and raced in Australia during the 1960's.

He would be in his 70's .

I see his name occasionally in past racing notes.

I am a semi-retired journalist and would like to reconnect with John if possible.

Thank you, Pauline Clayton, ...Sunshine Coast..Queensland..Australia

How can a journo be semi-retired, Pauline?

I seem to remember the name, but I don't recall where from. What do you know about what he raced, when and where?

Hi Ray, a journalist is semi-retired, when asked to volunteer services, or write biographies with payment if said tome sells...in print too many people now supply copy for free or public relations outfits supply copy for free.

Besides still writing The Book.

John did race at Brand's Hatch.

Sedan car racer.

Could even be back in Australia....

Thank you for responding.

cheers Pauline

Pauline,

John is mentioned a fair bit in this Cooper racing car thread. He crashed the ex Bill Patterson T51 at Melbourne's Sandown circuit in 1962.

You'll find mention on the thread that TNF member, David McKinney was looking for him in the UK. Not sure whether he ever found him.

I saw him last in July at a reunion of the school we were both at, if it's the same John Brindley.
He lives in Northamptonshire and I have an address.

Thank you Allan Lupton, an address would be great...

I can write of course....

If you went to school together, the John Brindley who lived in Australia for some time, would be around 70....

cheers Pauline Clayton, Sunshine Coast, Australia....(also around 70).

John was a stalwart of British national racing from the mid 70s to the mid 80s, usually quick in whatever he drove

I remember him doing good things in Capris and a Camaro.

And a awful lot of damage to the Druids barriers at Oulton Park on one occasion - I think it may have been in a BMW.

After upending a Cooper at Sandown in the pre-safety belt days that would be nothing!

Yes, I'm sure you got it right - the racing John Brindley certainly had a fabrics company specialising in Denim. He was involved (in a motor racing capacity, not fortunately business wise) with John Foulson and apparently coached him to be able to do a half decent job in the   CanAm Lola in Thundersports. John was married to Juliette Brindley (nee Slaughter), who I understand sadly passed away just over a year ago after an 11 year battle with cancer.

Rewind and Backfire, you are amazing.

That would be the correct John Brindley.

His father had Brindley Silk Mills and so fabric would well be his profession.

I will send a card, or if anyone has a phone number for me, give him a call.

Maybe he has email.

Mine is:  claytonp@bigpond.com if anyone can pass it on or let him know I was looking to say hello.

You sound like a pretty interesting bunch.

This getting old is a bit of bother.

First, you do have the advantage of being able to retire, but second you don't have the ergs to do what you now have time to do.

I was never involved in car racing, but I did have a private pilot licence.

Will reveal my reason for looking for John.

In our 20's we went out together.  Melbourne. Australia.

In 1964 I went to work in London, he followed and I met his family.

He asked me to marry him, but I was out and about exploring the world, and not ready to settle down.

I returned to Australia and never saw him again.

One of those great and rare friends you sometimes wished you hadn't lost.

cheers...Pauline Clayton, Sunshine Coast, Queensland. Australia.

John Brindley finished second to Ayrton Senna in a race for identical Talbot Sunbeams at Oulton Park in 1982.

That explains why he disappeared from Australian motor racing then Pauline.

If you make contact with John, there would be a few interested here on TNF in knowing the answer to the why Bill Patterson ended up with the wreckage of his old Cooper T51, after John crashed it at Sandown in September 1962.

Good luck with the search.

Gentleman and in particular Allan Lupton,

I have just mailed a letter to John Palmer Brindley.

Allan Lupton is the only one who has seen John this year.

Is he on his feet? Is he hale and hearty?

I should have gone on this site last year as I was in London May just passed.

But only briefly, changing flights.

I am hoping he has family as he will be feeling lost without his wife of obviously, many, many years.

He had a sister Rosemary.

I have enjoyed meeting you all. I am presuming you are retired race car drivers...or enthusiasts in the field.

If he responds I will ask about the Cooper/Sandown.

Will let you know.

cheers Pauline

That's nothing - I beat Mark Thatcher in one of those dreadful Shell Sport Sunbeams at Mallory (probably same year), although everybody tells me it's nothing to be proud of - can't think why.

Best thing to do is send a letter via the BRDC at Silverstone - John is a member and they can pass it on.
I do have an address for him but it's 10 years old and he was in Long Buckby Wharf in Northampton back then.
John was a very good driver and him and my late father had several battles in the early '80s in Can-Am cars, an especially good one in Dubai in 1981 that I have on tape.

Well Peter, he got lost enough to put a great big dent in my driver's door. If my memory serves me correctly, Murray Taylor was third, after the, by now indignant, PM's son and I think Jeremy Shaw was fifth. Anyway getting closer to the original thread - the garlands were presented by Juliette Brindley.

Juliette was also Mark's press officer or PR as we'd call them now. She was also a very quick driver in her own right.
