This is to ask if any TNF folk will be interested to come along to a real petrol head's treat at the beginning of December, when the Greenwich Motor & Motorcycle Club (of which I am privileged to be president) will he hosting a special presentation by Eurosport's MotoGP technical commentator Neil Spalding on the subject of Honda's first MotoGP machine, the RC211V. The press release announcing the event has been put out this week, and is reproduced below. If any of you have attended one or other of the Greenwich Club's "Audiences with....", you'll know how enjoyable they have been.

SPALDERS GETS A GRIP: A LOOK AT THE BEST EVER ROAD RACING MOTORCYCLE - THE MACHINE WHICH HELPED VALENTINO ROSSI BECOME THE FIRST CHAMPION OF THE MotoGP ERA…………

Just what is the Difference Between a Road Bike and a MotoGP Machine?

The Greenwich Motor and Motorcycle Club is delighted to welcome back former KRC (Kent Racing Combine) road racer turned technical journalist and MotoGP television pundit, Neil Spalding, who will be giving an illustrated talk on the machine which dominated the beginning of the MotoGP era, Honda's legendary RC211V, at the Riverside Club, Eynsford, near Brands Hatch on Wednesday evening 4th December (Riverside, Eynsford, Dartford DA4 0AE). Doors open at 7.00pm with the talk commencing at 8.00pm. The price of entry is a £2 raffle ticket, and all proceeds from the evening will be split equally between the Kent Air Ambulance Service and the ACU Benevolent Fund. Those wishing to attend should call 07786-159748 to reserve their seats.

Neil Spalding’s interest in, and understanding of racing motorcycles began when he started competing himself in the 1980s. Rather than just ride bikes, he determined to learn how and why they worked in order to apply that knowledge to his own machinery. That determination paid off, first with a KRC championship to his credit and, more recently, with a burgeoning career as a technical journalist and broadcast commentator which has won him respect in the MotoGP pit lane as well as with race fans around the world. The talk which he will be giving on 4th December is one which has been well received by enthusiasts here and abroad recently. As Neil says himself: “The story of the RC211V is arguably the story of the greatest motorcycle ever developed”.

This event will be the first “Tony Lovett Memorial Evening” in honour of the Greenwich Club’s late Chairman, who was born the same year as his beloved motorcycle club – 1925 – and who died in 2010. It was Tony Lovett who instigated the club’s first evening events at the Riverside Club some years ago.

Good luck with the event but “The story of the RC211V is arguably the story of the greatest motorcycle ever developed” sounds a bit too much like Spalders 'bullsh**'. From his Eurosport perspective I am a little bit wary of his actual 'knowledge' and how much it depends on 'white coat syndrome'.

Where does the ethos of a motorcycle stop and technology for technologies sake take over? I am, of course, referring to Hondas' 'seamless' (pointless?) gearbox which according to young Spalders employs a dedicated technician to strip and rebuild it after every track outing just to save a nanosecond here and there when the pilot is obviously quite capable of loosing all those cumulative microseconds by out braking himself.

‘Fraid MotoGP is catching up Formula Boring with its’ incessant drive to eliminate the bloke controlling the machine.

Anyway have good evening and ask Spalders what he is doing next year. With the demise of Eurosports’ coverage I wish to know what channel to avoid.

My brother is 200 yards up the road, so he's probably going, although he's no fan of Spalders.  If nothing else, he'll probably meet a few of his old biking friends and they can pop over the ford to the Malt Shovel.
