1pros·ti·tute

\ˈpräs-tə-ˌtüt, -ˌtyüt\

: to use (something valuable, such as talent) in a way that is not appropriate or respectable and especially to earn money

Brazilian driver Felipe Massa gathered the local press on a lunch event.

Massa stated that his biggest pride in the process of leaving Ferrari is not becoming a prostitute to get a race seat in 2014 F1.

'It's a word I don't know if I shoud say/use, because it is too strong, but its indeed 'prostitute'. I didn't have to become a prostitute and that's another reason to be proud. I didn't beg to race. I wanted to keep racing, but didn't need to [prostitute myself]. I'm not gonna pay to race.

Of course I'm gonna help the team to get sponsors, it will be good for the car and for me, but I'm not gonna become a prostitute'. Said Massa.

Massa kept on saying that when he arrived F1 in the dawn of 2000's, paying drivers were already a common practice.

And this 'disease' kept spreading, reaching the big teams due to the economic crisis the world has been facing for some years already.

Regarding to his last race for Ferrari, Massa is hoping for a cold and rainy day on Sunday at Interlagos.

According to Massa, those conditions would allow him to get his last win for the Italian race team.

'Winning for the third time at Interlagos would be the biggest dream of my lifetime and the coronation of my relationship with Ferrari.

In order to happen, its necessary cold and rain to reduce the gap from RedBull'.

Massa also reminded about the crowd cheering for him: 'it always helps his race in Interlagos'.

Unfortunatelly for him the weather prediction is a temperature avg of 26ºC, with no possibility of rain on race day.

Isn't a pay driver the client not the prostitute?

Last time I checked prostitutes aren't the ones paying for the "ride"

I thought of Barrichello begging a ride even nowadays...

Semantics aside, Massa's reasoning is perfectly comprehensible.

I'm somewhat surprised that Williams hired him without financial backing. But I guess his help to get sponsor will be worth something.

Is Massa calling Alonso a prostitute

According to his logic...

I think Massa was very unpollite with his paydriver mates  :o

So we won't be seeing any Petrobras logos, or similar companies appearing on the Williams next year?

I can foresee now Massa as a Brazilian prostitute and Vettel as Justin Bieber in the photoshopped thread.

How does he explain the dozens of TV adverts he has done over the past decade if he thinks he wasn't selling himself to sponsors?

Dear Felipe, please go back and watch the interviews and press conferences after Hockenheim 2010 and therein you will find the very definition of what you say you are not but you are. Hint, he's funny looking and says "for sure" a lot...

I'd prostitute myself for an F1 drive.

Odd thing for him to say considering he took it in the ass at Hockenheim in front of millions of veiwers in 2010.

Of course, old ladies have more money to give than 18 year olds.

Well their aren't any other Brazilians around atm, and Bernie really wanted one on the grid. Not a smart thing to say IMO.

Aren't we all paying for entertainment, tickets to go the race, cable to watch it all on TV, and internet to stream and watch F1, when we could just sit on our beds and have more fun with our hand in five minutes than F1 brings us in five years? We're all whores.

First there was the comment about Schumacher and now this... I like Massa, but he is making it very hard for it to remain that way.

Not sure why this needs to be stated again, but whores aren't the ones that pay in that transaction...

Massa comparing pay drivers to prostitutes for bringing personal sponsors is just silly, if that is really how he sees it then surely he is no better than them for working in the Ferrari/Philip Morris Brothel™ for the last 8 years.

The way I see it Massa was prostituting himself for the last four years at Ferrari and I think he should have kept his mouth shut. What a stupid comment..

There is a divide.. but it is a very hard one to draw in middle cases.

Alonso (or hamilton, or raikkonen, etc) for example brings money because he is fantastic, and the money follows him.. it polishes the path, it may help a team choose him over, say, vettel if he has more money,  but he would have a good drive regardless.. and if santander walk then someone else will step in to be associated with him. He is the valuable commodity.

Your outright pay drivers (and I wont name current names but you know who they are) bring money because the money wont come without their drive.. no money no drive. The money comes first and the driver is chosen because of nationality/connections/family or whatever. The sponsor is the valuable commodity and if the sponsor drops they are never heard from again.

Many many drivers fall somewhere in between, Massa is one of them.. but he almost won a WDC remember, he wasnt a putz.

Of course the sport is not very fair either, many good drivers never get a chance due to money.. you have to be good AND able to parlay that into money.. but it is usually obvious whether the money or talent came first.

The way Massa and Williams go out of their way to underline Massa is not onboard because of sponsorcontracts makes you believe he really is only taken because of sponsor contracts.

But good to know he doesn't feel like a prostitue.

No, I mean he's getting paid anyway so unless they gave him extra $$ to move over for Fred then he's not a real true full-on whore, in other words he can't even whore himself properly!!!

Massa leading team Williams... straight into the abyss.

Poor choice of words by Massa.

He is implying one would need to give up his body (to sleep with someone from a team) to get a ride in F1.

If he meant he is not buying a seat, that is anything but being a prostitute.

Or Bernie helping him because he needs a Brazilian driver on the grid.

Ok, maybe he didn't prostitute but he certainly cockblocked that second Ferrari seat for some time.

What Massa probably meant was that he didn't need to be 'paid' by companies and corporations in order to be able to offer his personal package to the teams on the grid. He was hired by Williams on merit and what he could bring in terms of competence and experience. All this no matter what kind of sponsors he can and will bring to the team in the future. I'm surprised so many failed to understand what he meant. It's pretty obvious.

Ok, maybe he didn't prostitute but he certainly cockblocked that second Ferrari seat for some time.

Nobody else wanted the #2 seat. Perez didn't want it for instance. Kimi wanted at least the 1b seat and he got it since he's still the last Ferrari WDC.

I feel sorry for how things ended at Ferrari. Must have been embarrassing getting destroyed by Alonso year after year after im sure he had such high hopes at the start of 2010. First hockenheim 2010 which probably destroyed his confidence and his relationship with the team, then it was pretty much downhill from there. Many will point to Hungary 2009 as a moment that changed him but IMO he simply was never that great of a driver. The current regs require excellent race craft, something of a strength of Alonso which has perhaps widened the gap even more. I can forgive him for ignoring the team last this year as i think he deserves revenge for hockenheim. I hope he can race well next year and gain some self worth.

Saying he's proud for not selling out is a ridiculous thing to say for someone who has been bending over and taken it for years and years just so he can wear a nice red suit and get paid a lot of money, but then he never was the sharpest knife in the drawer so not surprised he would say a thing like that really..

Depends how you look at it. Pay driver finds sponsors to afford a living standard (motor racing) he wouldn't be qualified on skill alone.

Well but maybe all drivers were prostitutse at some stage, I haven't heard anyone in modern F1 who made it though the ladders with personal savings or bank loans.

Hahaha, well, depending on the alignment of the planets, it's either Spanish or Japanese so should that count as one or two? But there were at least two Italian clients as well...

Client should be the word, not prostitute. By that, he means the new team he is joining as one of the prostitutes in F1.

I'm glad he's decided against being a prostitute, it would have been a poor career choice, he probably wouldn't have made much money..... Besides, he'd look silly in a short skirt and high heels, he hasn't got the figure for it.

Seriously though, I think we all get what he means, without being pedantic about his choice of words spoken in his presumably (second?) non-native language.
