FIA Personality of the Year

The FIA has given the name of the ten finalists of the "FIA Personality of the Year" award for 2013. Who do you think it should be?

Robert Kubica for me, personally.

So for those who have answered "None of them", could you say why? I think they're all pretty deserving, for sure some other people could have deserved it too... Do you have suggestions? Or just don't like the principle of the award in itself?

Vettel for me.

If Vettel will win, this award is a joke. My vote goes to Kubica, but somehow I don't think that FIA will choose him.

How the hell is it a joke? I think it's pretty clear that Vettel has more of a personality than 99% of others involved in motorsport, clear as day.

I think it should be given posthumously to Maria de Villota. Her attitude and approach to life after her accident were an inspiration.

Other than that, it's a bit of a toss up. I don't recall any of the nominees doing anything particularly noteworthy, personality-wise at least.

I kinda understand Kubica, but really?! WRC2 is not WRC folks. I would expect that much of a winning margin if he would get back in a F1 seat and just blast around Vettel, claiming the WDC in the process. I admire the bloke, but 17 votes with Seb only at 11 and Ogier (the actual global rally champion) a mere one freakin' vote?! Utter nonsense.

So we have a dude that just obliterated one of the most brutal and awesome rally courses on the planet by a minute and a half, simultaneously saying goodbye to the toughest motorsport championship with two wins and a second place from four appearances and after that he just says f*** all y'all and goes to slap around two 'joke' championship in GTs and WTCC to prove his ultimate mettle and he gets nadda.

After that, here comes a mate who has no drive a week before he utterly crushes the field in the first two races at Monza and then just shows the world that he is the best in touring cars. 0 notice, great.

Here comes a dude that just won the f(((ing greatest race in the world a record breaking nine times and dedicates it to his then lost fellow compatriot and competitor over his recently dead father. 3 votes pffffff...

Ogier? Who? What he and the rest of the VW motorsport team / community achieved is nothing short of absolute godlike show of skill and yet the dude in a championship no fan of his heard of ever got nearly 20 more votes than the actual Champ. Pat yourselves on the back you s***kids.

And let's not forget finger boy over here. How in god's green earth does a team principle that wants to hire a Russian $$$driver and maybe a Mexican / Venezuelan $$$driver get half of his points. When will he ever be good enough for you, you hacks. Making me protect this lying douchenugget and his ultimate legacy makes me wanna shank myself in the neck but you mama's boys won't hear it.

"Personality". None of these, are much of a personality. Maybe Tom Kristensen, but that might be clouded due to how the Le Mans actually went this year.

If there's a guy more monotonous than Kimi, it's Eduardo Freitas. His race director messages in WEC races are pure boredom, and I love him for it, because of the slight contempt you can hear in his voice when he tells Giancarlo Fisichella for the 1000th time 'please respect track limits'...

He's the FIA version of Marvin the Paranoid Android.

Honourable mention for TK for his passionate words on the Le Mans podium this year after winning the race and re-dedicating the win to Allan Simonsen instead of Tom's own recent loss of his father. Very moving stuff and as 'Mr Le Mans' he was the perfect representation of what all drivers, teams, officials and fans were thinking at the time.

BTW... what does FIA mean when they say personality of the year? What are the looking for?

I'm a bit disappointed by the absense of Alex Zanardi, but he might have done not enough racing this year to warrant a place on the shortlist. He's a real inspiration I think.

Otherwise, I think it'd be great for a woman to win it. Besides, I really like Monisha Kaltenborn, she's a fresh personality, very optimistic. It would also be great to show that the FIA does respect women in this men's world.

Based on what? The fact that he's a good driver? That doesn't make him a personality, it just makes him a good driver.

Unless 'personality of the year' can be won by somebody with an often negative personality, in which case I think Vettel could be a candidate. Do they have to be a good personality to win?

I don't want to keep ripping into Seb, but the way people jump on his bandwagon of success, pretending that stuff like Multi 21-gate says nothing about his character, come on.

It's between either Vettel, Kristensen, or Newey for me. Vettel is so unlike the rest of his generation in terms of his values, his views, and his sheer dedication to his work that he stands out in a crowd of drivers his age as well as people--normal is the new unique. 

Please tell me you're not implying he has particularly good values, standing out from all of his peers with his exemplary character. I'm getting somewhat confused here, is this 'personality of the year', or 'most successful' under another name.

I know people will disagree with me on this, but I think the guy who having had his life permanently changed by a crash in rallying proceeds to show the mental strength to go back into the sport and win his first championship, irrespective of the competition, should be the only winner. We're looking for personality of the year; Robert's courage and stamina to overcome his disability and face the sport which almost cost him his life makes him the only candidate.

Vettel may have won the title again - congratulations to him - but in the grand scheme of things it is incomparable to the efforts of the man who still struggles to carry out daily activities but tries to put that behind him when he steps foot in the car.

An amazing achievement to win a championship considering all his rehabilitation and an inspiration to all racing drivers.

No other driver has impressed me as much this year with what they've achieved.

I don't see much point in this award.  Who votes in it?  Vettel would be a deserving winner (as would others such as Loeb and Ogier), but I suspect the winner would always be an F1 driver by default.

Given the list though, I take it they used the same criteria for personality as the BBC.  I'm still perplexed at how Frank Bruno was beaten into the runner up spot twice by the amazing personalities of Nick Faldo and then Jonathon Edwards???

For me, it is Kubica. After the events he went through, he clearly showed his determination and personality.

I suppose people will disagree on Vettel's personality. To me he completely lacks charisma and sometimes comes off as a PR puppet. Lewis and Kimi are fascinating characters, Alonso, too. Hell, I even like Jenson. But Vettel is mostly just kinda meh and I swear I have to hit mute on my remote every time he makes those girlish screams on the radio after winning. He is a very good driver though.

And I find it normal. it's his private life, it is his decision how to go on with such situation. Yet we can't say that because he has a dislike towards media, he lacks a personality.

If liking media and being liked by them means personality, then Snooki and New Jersey Shore seems like bunch of great personalities.

Kristensen. Simply because I'd rather see someone who isn't from F1 win it. Oh, and 9 Le Mans wins is a pretty incredible achievement.
