Pleased to learn that the car has been recovered.  Dismayed over its state.  :(

Could have been much worse; Courtneys rd - if it's still anything like I knew it - has many fatally attractive trees, even in a Morris Minor

Will be very interesting to see what can be discovered.

reading through this thread and got to the bit where the car had been found, and found it heartwarming with a happy ending, etc  , but then read the post  listing the sorry state the car was in when found, and  become completely depressed...

Sad ending, OTOH it could have been worse, a lot worse.

I suggest a ceremonial burning at the stake, say on the Sunday of the PI historics, for the culprits.

I wonder what is in the heads [probably not a lot] of the idiots who perform these acts of vandalism.

You'd probably find if you hit them in the head you'd miss their brain by about 4 feet.........

Hi Again Guys;

Just had a thought.

It might be a good idea to keep an eye on Facebook.

The Einsteins that have done this will probably not have the brains to keep quiet about it.

They,I think, will have to blab to their mates about it.

Neanderthal reasoning would be to broadcast what they have done to make them look "cool."

Maybe shooting off the mouth about it would,in their eyes, add a percentage to a certain part of their anatomy!!

Hopefully if caught they will be hit with the book.

Unfortunately I think the old hand wringer defence will come up.

As follows "Poor little Chauncey is a nice boy but is all traumatised because his Father gave him a clip under the ear and a toe up the backside when he was ten." etc' etc.

Yeah right!!

I agree completely with the burning at the stake at Phillip Island.

But, only after ritual castration wit a rope attached to a Formula 5000!

Cheers.

Roger.

This is a sad story, but I'd say that the thief or thieves eventually realised that what they'd taken was too distinctive and too hot to hang onto. The description of the damage sounds to me as if someone set out to deliberately cause as much damage as they could before abandoning it. They obviously ran around a bit, I know that Australia is a big place, but seems odd that the noise didn't attract any attention, the Rennmax isn't exactly a cross-country vehicle, so they must have stuck to roads.

It really sounds like they were lucky not to kill themselves in it...

The headlights on that car wouldn't be very effective, presumably their adventure was at night, sounds pretty exciting to me.

maybe the Barmy Army is right and we do live in a convict colony.

I'm also a guilty one for misspelling (I've probably got that wrong too) Rennmax.Ray, does the Renn part come from the German word rennen to race / run?

cheers

Yes, that's the source of the name...

Bob is surprised everyone doesn't understand that. And if you look at the 'programmes' thread you see 'Renmax' everywhere in the Vee entry list from Oran Park!

To quote Bob, "Once the wrong spelling's in print then there's no hope of anyone ever getting it right!"

Yes, Renn from race in German.

I lost an Aprilia RSV 1000 once, very similar, thrashed it, dropped it, then dumped it in the back yard of an uninhabited house, and the police knew who they were (repeat offenders) but couldn't pin a thing on them.

That's also the problem. people don't know their programmes from their programs.

Commiserations Andrew... I lost a Honda 750 K2 once, very similar, stripped it, then dumped it, and I knew who did it (repeat offenders) but couldn't pin a thing on them

PS I would much rather have owned an Aprilia RSV 1000...or Laverda Triple (in the period)...hmmm, so do you know that other famous Aussie Aprilia rider? ;)

And there was of course the famous Rennmax racing motorcycle by NSU. I'm surprised everyone doesn't seem to know that. It was deliberately named to give the impression it was derived from the Max production bike.
I came across this thread because the title lead me to believe it was about one of those two-wheeled racers :)

A friend of mine owns a very large building in which he stores part of his car collection. He has been broken into on 4 different occasions and has caught them in the act twice. The First time he lost a lot of loose items such as new wheels in boxes and the steering wheel was removed from his ISO .

It was easy to track down the thieves... they tried to sell his goods on ebay.

Second time he rolled up to find the bandits still on the premises ,3 car loads of them. He destroyed one of their cars with his land cruiser and as is the attitude of young men today,  he was attacked for doing in the commodore.

Again the crooks were easily caught by the police because one of the dills dropped their phone, which was full of texts outlining how they were going to raid the building.

He has taken to living in the place ,which meant he caught the crooks in the place, who entered his bedroom ...ooops!.

It would appear that distinctive vehicles are not immune to theft in Australia, witness the theft of hot rods on the Gold coast during the wintersun festival,  on at least two occasions, never to be seen again.

I gad a genuine L34 Torana stolen from a security carpark here in Melbourne. It was very distinctive considering the range of modifications that had been done to improve the car.

That was in 1985. Nothing of the car has ever turned up. So it's probably still in one piece somewhere well that's what I'd like to believe!

I'm interested in the change from BMW to Repco engines in this car, or these cars.

Here are several dated photos of Doug Macarthur at the Farm.

The car looks the same around the engine up until February 1971, but then it changes....either the car or just the engine..

Firstly, 5th September 1970

117_zps0cc64e5d.jpg

120_zpsdaee4abc.jpg

Then, 14th February 1971...maybe a different car??

189_zps150d52f5.jpg

Then, 2nd May 1971...several body work changes, including the wing, & maybe the engine??

138_zps31d60308.jpg

145_zps3c89d988.jpg

And, finally, 12th February 1972....it certainly has got a Repco in it.

Bathurst 1972 Rennmax Repco

83_zpsf9d195b8.jpg

89_zps94dcd988.jpg

It appears that the Repco engine was fitted sometime between May 1971 & February 1972.

This questions the dateline of a rear-end shunt in its second outing & then immediately being rebuilt with the Repco engine.....

even though Ray Bell remembers the car in the shunt as already having the Repco engine.

From my photos it would appear that he ran it for all of 1970 & almost half of 1971 that we know of, with the BMW engine.

This would make the shunt late in 71 or early 72, much later than its second race meeting.

I'm confused!!

I'd have to go through the magazines to check, Lynton...

The front guards did a 2-stage metamorphosis as tyre profiles dropped over the years, that's why the car looks so different today.

It was only a couple or so years ago at a Ulysses Club (over 50's motorcycle social club) AGM weekend that around 14 Harley Davisdons were stolen. One of the harleys had a tracking device installed and police were able to track the bike to the inside of a truck, where all the bikes were located, soon to be transported interstate and broken up into parts.

That's a different car...

Ray always regretted selling his (it went to John Fraser in Brisbane) and had Bob build him another. Over the years he made his own changes to the car, or perhaps Ty did.

Thanks for setting that straight, but what has happened to Ray's old car then. is it the car that Jim Foulis is currently running in historics?

Jay Bondini wrote that there were 4 sports cars built, so that would be his current recently stolen car, the Jim Foulis car, Ray Hangar's current car, and also the blue car driven by Paul Gibson which was fitted with a 5 litre V8,  and I haven't seen since it had the most spectacular engine blow-up at Winton many years ago. Have i missed anything?

That list would be correct, timbo...

The 5-litre car was built for Lionel Ayers, it then went to Jim Phillips and was driven later by Paul Gibson. It remained with the Phillips family for a long time afterwards. Maybe it still does.

Checking the race reports - though not necessarily exhaustively - I found the crash as being what appears the fourth appearance of the car with the Repco V8. Doug stalled just after the 1-minute board when on the front row of the grid alongside John Harvey, the quicker cars managed to get around him but Bill Marshall (Turner) and Graham Murray (MGB) hit the Rennmax.

It appears that the first Repco-powered outing was at Mallala on November 17, 1971, with the Farm International meeting the next time out, then Bathurst followed by the ill-fated showing at the RAC Trophy meeting on April 30 at the Farm.

Lynton, could you please e-mail me urgently?

My guess is that these chaps have an established relationship with the police...

Let's hope it's good enough that it leads to them doing some serious penal servitude.

33 years old? A grown-up did it? Got my estimate of the culprit(s) wrong - thought they would be teenage, knuckle-dragging, boy-racer saddo's.

Anyway, hanging is too good for them. Tarred and feathered before the short drive in a tumbrel ...

His defence that we will pay for

will say that he had a hard life

beaten as a child by his drunken yobo father

was bulled at school and could not  find employment

had to turn to drugs to support his family

that live on the social security and will never have a job

And respect for the law and order is unheard of

and it all starts over again....... :stoned:

It's a great world we live in.

That guy really is a waste of good oxygen. Better to use the oxygen he uses to breathe for a more suitable purpose. Like more racing cars!!
