Anyone else had the Season Review for Christmas?

Am watching now, some great team radio bits and bobs from Malaysia! Loads of unheard bits from Malaysia, and also Turkey 2010 and Belgium/Brazil 2012.

Why would they be covering 2010 and 2012 in 2013 review?

Because 2013 was so boring that they had to put footage in from exciting seasons to make it bearable to watch.

It's about multi 21/Webber and Vettel history.

Haven't seen it myself but saw in F1 zones review it's previously unreleased team radio from Turkey.

This was such an "entertaining" year I think I'll pass on even illegally downloading this.

Here are the relevant Malaysia bits that got my attention:

RBR (before overtake) - Sebastian, Multi-Map 2-1, Multi-Map 2-1 and look after your tyres please.

Vettel (after overtake) - I was really scared, main straight. All of a sudden he was moving and I had to leave the line. To repeat, I had to get over the line, he didn't leave me any space.

And from Turkey 2010:

Vettel - *******************! What the **** are we doing here? We are working to win the world championship for **** sake! What a stupid action! I'm going home!

A few more bits, but don't want to spoil everything! (highlight the relevant bits)

Watching more now: FOM have omitted the moment where the 'tyre hit camera man' from the German Grand Prix. The live camera angle of the tyre bouncing is shown, but cuts to a different angle before the actual 'hit'.

For all the BBC's broadcasting excellence with piecing together footage to make it exciting, I felt the season review couldn't jazz this season up for me at all.

Edit, just realised this is about the official DVD. I would have been disappointed had I got it to be brutally honest. I saw enough of this season live let alone having a reminder.

I found the 2012 and 2011 reviews disappointing. I miss all the inbetween race and off track coverage they used to include, but don't seem to anymore. The way the FOM producers decide to not include stuff they find embarrassing even if they are a relevant story piece to the year is disappointing. The format seems to be just bang on with each race straight from the last, no podiums, no interviews, nothing else. For me this started in 2009. The 2008 review was the last one to have depth and insight to it. I will be getting the 2013 review but i don't expect much.

The cameraman accident is a case in point. I mean did they even mention it? Did they mention the new measures to stop wheels flying off and why they were implemented?

Bet they didn't mention Mark Robinson either. Was there much coverage on the German GP Marussia rolling incident? Or the fire truck on the track at Korea?

I wonder if much was discussed on the Pirelli politics and dilemmas....

Anyway I'll find out.

Agreed. I saw some of the Sky season review. On the show information page, it described 2013 as a 'remarkable' season or something to that affect

It was remarkable. What Vettel did is unlikely to be repeated for decades.

What Vettel did has happened twice in 14 years so it could happen again if the circumstances suit. It was remarkable I have to agree, but I do hope it doesn't happen again for a long while. I don't think this season warranted buying a DVD for me. I can't think of any races where I genuinely thought they were exciting to the end. Most of 2013 was predictable where it was one man and one team way clear of the opposition. I want to see a title fight next year not a season long catch up test session. Red Bull have just been far too good and hopefully F1 can get a bit of its magic back with closer competition from now on. :)

Could not express it better. Stopped collecting the recordings. What a shame.

Hopefully 2014 becomes better....

2013 had historic value with what Seb/RB achieved. So it was remarkable in that sense.

Was it a thrill ride all the way through? No, and it was not what I would personally picture as a classic season. For myself a classic year has to have a close run Championship, and the second half of 2013 did not provide that due to the Seb/RB domination.

It was not a horrible year, there was enough to keep me hooked like Lewis vs Rosberg and admiring Vettel (this was the year I went from being a cynic of his to more of an admirer), but if I fancied a afternoon of classic when I am old and grey in 40 years, I am more likely to put on 2008 or 2012 for obvious reasons.

I just stopped getting the reviews a couple of years ago as I realised I wasn't watching my older ones back anymore. I think partly because they're 3 hours long or more which means dedicated a lot of time to watching one. I remember they improved the narration a few years ago. It used to be almost "as live" and Ben Edwards false surprise at the events on screen really bothered me. It became more matter of fact and natural in around 2009 IIRC. But apart from that they just seem to get longer and longer without including much new content.

Contrast that to the 1996 review which had the pre-season buildup, each race and news recap sections every few races in a nice 90 minute-ish package. Unfortunately the tape has been damaged and I'd love to get that year on DVD.

And hopefully we won't see it again by one driver in the next 14 years, at least I hope not. You didn't really make clear which part of the remarkable record you were referring to. We could also say no other driver has won 4 championships in a Red Bull, not even the great Schumacher, but it broadens the argument a little too much.

I wasn't referring to a 'part' of the remarkable record I was referring to all of it. What he did in 2013 was simply a remarkable performance by a great driver in a fantastic car.

Indeed it did, I do not think many would dispute that.

But did it make for remarkable viewing compared to other seasons? Not a Seb hater, and it was not about him winning, but I would have 2012 over 2013 anytime for my viewing pleasure. Just like I would have 2003 over 2004 , yes 2004 was more "remarkable" in terms of records, but a close run WDC will always excite people more and provide "remarkable" excitement for viewers.

There was a lot of action right through the field. Cars which regularly qualified badly moving forwards, while cars which qualified well moved backwards. It was often hard to predict where the cars would finish on any given weekend (except for Seb, in the latter half) because of the odd performance windows for some of the designs. There were, I agree, some contrived problems with the tyres caused by the weird Mercedes test and Red Bull railroading changes which may have detracted from the 'authenticity' of the relative performances but on the whole there was a lot of good stuff going on in terms of racing action.

I obviously can't convince you to like something or take enjoyment from the season in the way that I did, so please don't think that I am trying to change your mind, only explaining what it was that I took away from the championship.

I don't think their were anything wrong with the season exept the ongoing use of gimmicks thats adds nothing to the sport. The fastest team/driver won every race bar Silverstone.

Fair enough, they are reasonable point, and yeah I know you were not trying to change anyone's mind, just a exchange of perceptions of enjoyment is how I read our little debate.

Thing is, I did not dislike 2013, I had more fun as a viewer in 2012, but as a whole I enjoyed my viewing experience in 2013. Sometimes it does come down to fanboy bias, and I really enjoyed Hungary this year as a Lewis fan, that race was probably my high point of the year.

Early on, I agree the randomness was rather exciting viewing, and we had some decent races but relative to other years, it did not grab as much.

Anyway I'll find out.

From what i remember they didn't mention those new measures specifically but they did show the lead-up to the cameraman accident (Red Bull messing up) from several angles - without the actual hit, but fair enough to me. They mentioned Mark, just like they mentioned Maria de Villota and showed a commemoration by her fellow drivers at Suzuka.

The Marussia rolling incident is shown, just like the fire truck in Korea.

There's a lot of attention for all the Pirelli politics and dilemmas, all those delaminations are shown and there's coverage from the mid season Silverstone test.

From a journalistic point of view those items are handled pretty fair and informative.

Overall there's a lot of action to be seen, but the individual GP reports are more focused on track action than on how the race developed and sometimes it's getting a bit out of balance. Only from the images of the podium ceremony or the result table at the end of a GP e.g. one is made aware that Raikkonen finished second in Bahrain (with a short mention "thanks to conserving his tyres") or that Rosberg finished 2nd in India or 3rd in Abu Dhabi.

A positive surprise are the on board images of Kimi's last one and a half lap in Monaco showing e.g. a pass on the outside of Ste Devote (!) on Hulkenberg at the start of the last lap. Amazing.

Negative surprise is that they didn't show or even mention the completely botched up Red Bull pit stop in Brazil. Very strange.

Red Bull critics will a have difficult time anyway with this one - I wonder why the hell they show Helmut Marko's gleaming face after almost every race again and again, there are some nicer faces around in the paddock to show, I would think.

thanks for that info. still not got the dvd yet. nice to hear Maria and Mark mentioned, especially the Maria tribute. maybe good then. The mid silverstone test coverage is a plus too. Getting better then? Good. my opinion changes... looking forward to getting it now.

what a waste of money, only 5 races worth watching anyway, the Vettel ones are a yawn fest and the Silverstone one is a piss take cause of tyres.
