Adelaide Motorsport Festival

The Adelaide Motorsport Festival is happening, it will be a two day event with a hill climb on Saturday 12th April to Windy Point and a track event on  Sunday 13th using portions of the old GP/Clipsal circuit. . The response has been tremendous and the object is to have a family style event with cars and motorbikes, There will also be a wide range of cars and bikes on display. Entrants are coming from far and wide.

I was tempted to have a go onb Windy Point BUT the cars must be registered so that counts me out!  Maybe I can run the Galaxie!

Lovely day in the sunny Adelaide autumn weather (23C).  Reasonable size crowd, easy access to everything.  Great value for $20!

The Windy Point Hillclimb was a bit of a disaster. Several crashes with a photographer severely injured when hit by a wayward Nissan. Another Nissan 380? hit and damaged the armco too. Plus a Toyota too was severely damaged. All my reports come from people not actually there! Though they were in the Parklands yesterday

Pity as it seemed to be an interesting event.  The consesnsus is that it will not happen again. The Safe Work people plus the do gooders are all out in force. Again very much a pity. For both competitors and organisers. 

In recent times that some peoples ambition exceed their ability. That sort of event is NOT 11/10ths. The same it seems in tarmac rallys too.

I believe no. 22 is the ex-Craig Hill Lola T460 Formula Atlantic from the Canadian Championship in 1976.  Very nicely restored, though it used to run #25.

Purely for the record, the program claims that No 22 is a Lola T560. Not that I'd know a T460 from a T 560 from a T 5 million and 60... 

IIRC, Gary, the T 5,000,060 had 9 wheels!

2Bob referenced the Toyota 2000GT and the Gemini Formula Junior in an earlier post. 

What a gem the You Only Live Twice car (mit roof!) was. This example was very close to pristine.

And the Gemini. What a terrific looking car. I spoke to the owner (far right) and he confirmed it was a lovely thing to drive. I'm sure many of you northern hemispherists have seen it. It appeared at Goodwood in, I think, 2007.

I went to the Rock and Roll Rendevous at Birdwood. Always a good day. Enough sometime Sports Sedan competitors there to make a decent field. And none of them are playing at Mallala this weekend except me,,, in a 2E Torana I have had for near 20 years.

They were not quite that bad, though I suspect they are like a Viva/ Torana that when you jack them up on one side or put them on a hoist it is difficult to open the doors. As I have a Torana on the hoist ATM.

The XF Falcon on a tyre hoist was always good value!

I always had the impression, though not necessarily the experience, that these cars were actually pretty solid. GM-H wouldn't risk their reputation in Australia on a car that was too flimsy, not in those days.

Ray, Victors were fairly flimsy underpowered pommy prams. Just ok for metro commuting as were the Vivas that followed. The HB HC models got a name change to Torana. The 4 cyl ones were  a very average car, the 6 cyl ones were a lot stronger as the whole 'chassis' spot welded to the floor was bigger and stronger, as were the rear pick up points. And ofcourse the front was longer and stronger. Still an average and narrow gutted motor car but were a handy device for motorsport, with all their faults handled well, had a good power to weight and a small frontal area. 

The full size 50s and 60s Vauxhalls, Velox, Cresta etc though were ok cars and were reasonably tough

The Vivas, yes. But the first series of Victors looked pretty solid to me. I doubt that they performed as well as the contemporary competitors from BMC (Lancer, Major), mainly because they were too heavy. Though the 3-speed box was little help.

My mother had one. Weak and underpowered. My Vauxhall nut mate has always been of the same opinion, especially early shape ones. Lancers/ Majors were a better car and they both had their faults too, as did Anglia/ Cortinas.  Low cost cars for the British masses. Just ok there but not so great in the wide open spaces of Oz. Cortinas must have been the best as there is still quite a few left. Early Victors? virtually nil. Though they never sold well new anyway.

The HB HC Viva/ Torana 4 while a lousy car was better than the Victor as a car. I have had to drive and work on both!
