RIP Sir Jack

In case some people don't look beyond "Racing Comments" (myself included), here's the link to the thread created in the Nostalgia forum (http://forums.autosp...ck-brabham-rip/)

http://brabham.co.uk/

Sir Jack Brabham AO, OBE, triple Formula 1 World Champion, has died at the age of 88. Sir Jack passed away peacefully at his Gold Coast, Australia, home on Monday morning.

Formula 1 World Champion in 1959, 1960 and 1966 and double Constructors’ Champion (1966 and 1967), Sir Jack was one of the most accomplished drivers and team owners in the history of the sport. The first driver to be knighted for services to motorsport, ‘Black Jack’ rose from racing midgets on dirt ovals in Australia to dominate global motorsport.

His first two titles in the Cooper Climax marked the end for front-engined Formula 1 cars. The third made him the only driver in history to win a World Championship in a car of his own manufacture, the Brabham BT19 – a feat unlikely to ever be repeated.

Acclaimed as a brilliant engineer, technological innovations brought about by the Brabham team helped to shape the sport today. Through his partnership with Ron Tauranac, over 500 Brabham racecars were built from the team’s British Surrey base in the 1960s alone, while the Brabham name continued in F1 for 30 years.

Although Jack scored his final win in the 1970 South African Grand Prix, the legacy has continued with all three of his sons achieving their own global success, while third generation drivers Matthew and Sam are building their own notable racing careers.

On behalf of the family, Jack’s youngest son David said: “It’s a very sad day for all of us. My father passed away peacefully at home at the age of 88 this morning. He lived an incredible life, achieving more than anyone would ever dream of and he will continue to live on through the astounding legacy he leaves behind.”

Sir Jack is survived by his wife, Lady Margaret, sons Geoff, Gary and David and their families.

All the drivers who raced in Sir Jack's era have my infinite respect. But what Sir Jack achieved (winning the title in his own car) is not something we're ever likely to see again today.

RIP.

Sadly I think he will be more missed outside of Australia.

the international reaction might see him get some overdue acknowledgement locally. that more aussies don't appreciate the enormity of building your own car then winning the world championship is staggering.

A legend of the sport, and an Australian icon that is genuinely under appreciated in our country.

Enjoy the big track in the sky mate.

A unique triple WC, his exploits will never be equaled. One of the many things I admire is the way he retired, winning the SA GP, coming 2nd at Monaco and Britain, and being in a solid podium spot in Mexico when his engine blew. On the very top of his game at the age of 44.   So long Sir Jack.

Sir Brabham was a legend, proper. Sadly doesn't feature in many top-10's as much as, and where he should. I don't think anyone is going to match that feat anytime soon. You Sir, will be missed.

edit: This is the first that i ever read him being mentioned as "Black Jack." Would someone share stories about him that may be known. Thanks!

RIP, Sir Jack.

I had the privilege to meet him once a few years back, and what struck me was how passionate about racing he still was. He was a man who was clearly in his advanced years, but seemed to have absolutely no interest in leaving racing behind him.

I was not at all surprised to see this photo pop up today. It was taken yesterday. A racer to the very end.

RIP Sir Jack.
Legend is an overused term but his achievements were legendary in my opinion. Very quick and tough competitor, very competent engineer and very competent manager.
Quite the talent spotter as well, I think a few original Brabham guys still potter around in motor racing.

I had the pleasure of talking to him a few times and he was a racer through and through to his very core.

Once again Sir Jack RIP, a life well lived.

Regards Mike

Whenever we saw him talkng to cameras at Melbourne it always struck me how well and young he still looked for his age.

As said, a proper legend.

Sad passing.

I tip my hat to Sir Jack.

"He remains the only man in history to have designed, built and driven a championship-winning car." - BBC

Legendary.

He also once ran out of fuel at the end of a race and pushed the car across the finish line to win.

He must have been a long way ahead!

I saw a clip of him on TV today filmed a while back. He was saying something like:

"I'm going to die with no enemies...

"I'm going to outlive the bastards."

:D I hope he did.

Always struck me as being a very quiet man who felt very uncomfortable in front of cameras and in the public eye.

You can never take away his achievements, in an era when people were dying left right and centre, to do it all in the seemingly controlled and calcluated manner Jack did says it all.

Was maybe not as mercurial as some, but certainly had a racing brain like no other in those days and knew perfectly how to win championships, a skill few racers have. And some of them in this country in particular are lauded far more than this legend. Raced against Clark, Hill, Rindt and many others and beat them all.

Few can say that, fewer still have won championships against them.

Very sad day for the family, but in other ways its for the best.
He had been suffering for a while so at least that's over.

I find it unfortunate that Sir Jack never really had the recognition he so well deserved.
Here in Australia, it was only the motor sport community that trully understood his achievements.

Many other sportsmen/women are far better remembered even though they achieved far less, and that's sad.

RIP Sir Jack.

In 2006, Australia Post released a postage stamp that featured him. At the Australian Formula 1 grand prix, he was to do an autograph signing session, and I (somewhat cleverly) managed to find him in the crowd as he was walking from the paddock area to the autograph signing stage.

I had a brief chat with him, and got an autograph, and let him go on his way. And in those minutes, not a single other person in the crowd *at a Grand Prix*, *in Australia*, seemed to have any idea who this old man was.  Certainly as he walked away from me, nobody else paid him any attention.

Amazing career and amazing life considering he was driving during a period where death was around the corner every weekend.
