The addition of the old part wouldn't have been so bad, but which idiot came up with the idea of adding this pigtail in the middle of the straight (where the Remus curve is today)?? Some people just deserve a punch in the face. I'm glad it stayed how it is and am EXTREMELY looking forward to see F1 on this beautiful circuit again!

I really hope RBR have closed up on the Mercs!

Although it seemed it in the last race, i think the short circuit in Montreal flattered and the lack of engine need helped there too. Austria is also short, so time-wise the cars will be closer but I think the Mercs will be just as far ahead of the pack as in Montreal.

This is the % time the next best non-mercedes car was from pole in the last 3 races FYI:

Spain - 101.24 (RIC) (aero + speed circuit)

Monaco - 100.52 (RIC) (downforce circuit)

Canada - 100.90 (VET) (speed + braking circuit)

Two of those braking zones are heavily uphill so nowhere near the braking force and longevity required as Canada's three heavy braking points from top speed on the flat.

I'm aware that the Mercs are a second down the road. Canada was a flash in the pan. My post was more to do with the fact that I read somewhere that RBR have a massive update coming!

Only Alonso, Räikkönen and Button have driven on this track before. That's a huge advantage for Ferrari here! ;-)
Let's see if they can reach the lap times from 2003...

Just realised you've forgotten someone. ;)

Apologies to those who were offended by the initial title of this thread. I was on F1technical and I saw they already made a race thread for Austria. That was the reason I made one here. I see its been changed now. Peace

Ha, even the sector indicators know who will be passing through them first.

Massa as well.

I expect faster laptimes than 2003. Look at Canadian GP, laptimes were faster than the ones from 2003, though don't know if that track layout has changed much since 2003?

This track is absolutley gorgeous. I could not be happier that it has returned. Modern ciurcit design should sample this track, simple and built around the landscape. Can't go wrong with that.

I might be nitpicking, but I don't like the placement of the sector timing splits. Sector 1 should be between Remus and Glosser. Sector 2 should be between Gerhard Berger and the kink Turn 6.

Doubt they will lap quicker than in 2003. For those comparing Canada's lap times to those in 2003, i think it rained the day before qualifying and washed the rubber away. They also resurfaced parts of Canada in 2010 which should add grip to the track. Fastest lap in the 2003 Canadian GP was 2.5 sec's faster than in 2014.

We had some good races here.

1997 - trulli leads for some time but then his engine goes. Villeneuve wins.
1998 - great early battle between schumi and Hakkinen. Unfortunately cut short by schumachers mistake.
1999 - coulthard takes Hakkinen out and Irvine steals an unlikely win.
2000 - zonta takes out Schumacher at the start.
2002 - team orders fiasco.

The track was destroyed in a manner witnessed at donington with huge holes in the track where they planned on putting tunnels, and all the grandstands ripped down... Redbull bought it and 'restored' it rather than redeveloping it, to give Austria a track back.

In the interests of accuracy, can I point out that it was Red Bull that bought the A1 RIng and devastated it, then left it derelict for years.  The villains in this case, not the heroes as you imply.  Without Red Bull, there would have been  Austrian GPs every year.

Glad it is back.

2002 - team orders fiasco.

It's interesting that everybody remembers the 2002 team order fiasco while more or less the same thing happened in 2001: Barrichello letting Schumi by in the very last few meters of the race. Only difference being that it was for second place (behind DC) instead of the win.

Mercedes-Benz boss Juergen Hubbert already about on Ferrari's team orders in Austria in 2001: "We see things differently from Ferrari. If you castrate the sport, one day it's not going to be interesting anymore." http://atlasf1.autosport.com/2001/oct31/elizalde.html

I think that makes a big difference, actually. People are more likely to remember such act if it was for the lead/win.

The 2003 race was very entertaining though.

That's what I was pointing at: the big difference it makes to our memory.

Sure! And we had that famous pit fire moment: https://www.youtube....h?v=i6sNeYo5uvQ

I think the track is too simple.

Yeah, it gives an advantage to Merc teams because of the straights and simple corners, but I feel it needs a little more complexity :S

God forbid simplicity. I think we need to shove Abu Dhabi sector 3 in there somewhere. That will surely improve the racing.

And one of those Tilkey first corner complexes like Sepang.  Lots and lots of slow one-racing-line corners always improve the show.

Damon Hill, is that you?

Must admit, I really am a Hill-fan, but "There must be more than 9 corners for it to be a real F1 track" (or whatever he said)... Meh.

That modification would've been cool had it gone straight from the old Österreichring to Gösser corner.

It's the simplicity of the track that makes the drivers push more. This was one of the tracks that made the "super slo-mo" famous because the drivers would push that little bit more to extract more time.

Don't get me wrong, there's other tracks that have too many 1 lane corners and are boring because its impossible to overtake, like Spain. But there has to be a right mixture I think.

Yes simplicity is good here. Short tracks always produce better racing as cars go through the overtaking spots more often.

I like the simplicity of the place, the track has a nice flow to it. Remember playing it when I was about ten on old F1 games and going off at turn 1, every single time.

The racing here's good. Last race was a typically gutsy win from MSC. He turned in a great quali lap despite a mistake, led away but suffered the famous pit fire which dropped him behind Montoya and Raikkonen. Still, he then managed to go from third to first in about twenty seconds (not for the first time in his career) and turned in some storming laps to break Raikkonen's challenge. It was, as it transpired, quite an important weekend for the World title. Let's hope it is so again this weekend.

Undulations, gravel and trees..... THAT'S what an F1 circuit should be!

This was always one of my favourites - fast, short and great racing. There was rarely a boring GP here, even after Tilkification (I think this was his first F1 project, no?).

I'm so glad the redesign didn't happen, although being on the old Osterreichring would have been nice, but Remus would have been ruined....

A1-Ring%202005%20Proposal.gif

Also Red Bull have renamed the Niki Lauda Kurve, which has pissed him off somewhat!

I have to disagree, the new section appears to have an excellent flow and the circuit would have gained two or three fast corners including the old Dr. Tiroch Kurve.

I disagree, its a hairpin with a pretty steep gradient up to it, so the braking zone can be very late - thus a place skilled drivers can get good time gain, and also brilliant for passing. Not to mention the scenry is stunning up there.

The new hairpin (left hander a little earlier) may have been very similar, definitely uphill.

that's as heavy as a tank or a train carriage. hard to believe that but they say this thing weighs 50t, so could be.

That was only possible because the Mclaren had an ailing engine.

That would be cool, as long as it's big enough that it would have some flow to it, as opposed to a very big kart track.

Indeed. In it's previous run on the calendar, only Monza, old Hockenheim and Spa were faster (and sometimes Silverstone).

At last, a rival for Hermann Tilke.  But maybe you could get a few more slow corners in there?
