I prefer it to the old Hockenheim, although without it we are left with only Monza as a special low downforce track. There is a lot of misty eyed nostalgia for the old track but unless rain intervened the races were generally dull. Long straight, chicane, long straight, chicane... It was different, that's about all it had going for it.
I completely agree, I found those races pretty dull. Often the most exciting thing was a plume of white smoke as as an engine lunched itself whilst absolutely flat out.
Before the chicanes it must have been 'interesting' but terribly dangerous, after the chicanes just precisely as you describe. Having 'driven' it on a few F1 sims it's an exercise in the precise picking and executing of breaking points!
