An alternative thread has been opened for direct discussion on the incident, I for one have no objection to the NASCAR regulars continuing to post about it here or on the NASCAR thread.
It's an emotive subject, I feel there's too many sources confirming it's a fatality for us to pretend it's not "confirmed". Dilla's post of a timeline tallies with many accounts I've seen and as for ESPN having "broken the news" fully an hour after FOX Sports, it's now dropped off totally while they continue to nosh off a pre-season NFL non-event debut. 1am on the West Coast and it's all tucked up nicely for the evening.
Useless, but given the links to ABC and recalling the utter shambles they made of the Dan Wheldon crash, I'm not that surprised.
Edit: Now it's breaking and they've shown the video.... class move.
I didn't catch any coverage of the crash on ESPN or anything else, I guess they covered it as terrible as they usually cover things like this? The Wheldon coverage was mindblowingly awful.

How many times is it now that Stewart has had an incident at a non-NASCAR event? I remember some fracas in Australia.
Blah blah he's a racer, but at some point it affects your day job. That's twice in 12 months he's missed races because of it.

does that mean car 14 due to change of driver will start at the back of the grid?

Jayski has Regan Smith listed as going to the back so presumably yes.

Regan Smith takes over the 14 today Jp
Hmmm, well, there are Hendrick&Jr ties, but no better road course driver available? I first thought of McDowell, but he's got the Gibbs ties.
Though, strange that I think this way, it'll be awesome to see Regan Smith back in a Cup car

Ye, the last 3 Leavine Fam. races have ended quite good, 24th at Sonoma, 7th at Daytona and 26th at Indy!
But what the heck, Josh Wise have 5 straight top 30!

Just dropping another subject to lighten the mood. (just learned about the Tony Accident, but staying clear from that thread for now)
It appears (per AS none the less) that National Guard is terminating their sponsorship programm because they failed to recruit a single person, I mean... no one really? Still should be no trouble finding other names for Jr, he has won 3 races this season.

yikes that was nasty, guard rail destroyed, I guess Niki would say to keep on racing, but I'm looking at a 30+ minute red flag...
#85
Posted 10 August 2014 - 18:50
Holy crap that was like an aircraft accident... good to see all are ok... MacDowell close to going right through that barrier.
Some work needed to improve this track I think.
I wonder how long it'll take them to put that barrier back together.

He drove pretty much a full season for RAB Racing in Nationwide last year...was released before Homestead then took up the BKR Cup offer.

Im pretty sure the rules state that you have to be in the top 30 or something in points and do the full season.
Yes, Nascar has rules.
#94
Posted 10 August 2014 - 19:29
Nascar has had a fatality here before, maybe they need another one before they wake up to the simple fact it's not suitable under this safety pattern.
#95
Posted 10 August 2014 - 19:41
a concrete wall wouldnt give, so would be a harder impact
#96
Posted 10 August 2014 - 19:45
Did the ESPN anchor sort of just suggest that before NASCAR changed the rules for this year their drivers didn't try as hard to win races
#97
Posted 10 August 2014 - 19:49
I think they need to push the guard rails out and maybe more importantly use a barrier that stops cars being bounced back on to the track. The guardrail splitting is a little similar to F1 at Silverstone this year.
