That's exactly what the (former) CART teams want to happen isn't it, to have a big falling out with the IRL this early into the reunification....

Sure it was a fuel economy win, but it pays points, and its in the record book. Good for her.
(For the conspiracy theory people- this would be the last race you'd want her to get the call and win... No US audience)

What are you talking about? Buddy won that race fair and square, he was the fastest car the whole month and he drove his heart out in that car to make it to victory. The fact that he got shafted by the whole Danica crap at Rahal has nothing to do with the fact that he deserved the win. And let's not forget that he was a championship contender that year until he was placed on his roof at Chicagoland.
Rice can do the job, but too bad that he's been screwed around and ultimately left to be in a POS D&R car.
Regarding Danica, well, she gambled and it paid off. As much as I hate her, to finish first you must finish and she did just that.
The downside now will be the fact that Danicamania will be on for the next five months.

What the hell? It states that Danica won after Helio pitted at the end, coming out of the pits 5 seconds behind her. That never happened! Helio was one of the ones that didn't pit- he just backed off a ton. Am I going crazy or did they just make this stuff up??
#69

Helio had to dial it way down at the end, but never pitted...

Not the best way to win a race but it's fantastic news for the reunification. A woman winning a major open wheel race - that's surely going to make the news beyond the specialist media.
It's exactly what they need to boost the audience figures a bit.

I sense that a struggling F1 team might try to now get Danica to bolster finances.

Unfortunately she is quite **** on anything but ovals, thus circuit racing will never beckon for her.

Today, Danica Patrick was the first woman to win a proper world class top level open wheel motor race. Even if she does nothing else in her racing career, the fact is there, the bar for what women can achieve in motorsport has just been raised another level, a level that up until very recently most men thought impossible for women in motor racing to reach.
It's not a day to diss the achievement, it's a day to think back on all the open wheel races that we've all seen in our lifetimes, be it Formula One, Indycar racing or Champcars, and realise what just happened. This is a huge deal. If anything we should put the negatives aside just for once and raise a glass to her...

How many tennis tournys did Anna win as a professional? ZERO! If anything, it makes her like Maria Sharapova circa 2005 or so.
That said, until she was hurt, Anna was a legit woman tennis player. She reached the quarters serveral times in grand slams and she was in the top 20 for a while. I guess it was hard comming back from the injury and easier to make money by posing than playing.

Races have been won for far less, doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile winning is winning....
Congratulations Danica..

There was 30mins of post race coverage and they did not interview 2nd or 3 place drivers?!?!! But we got to see Danica driving around the track in an S2000 waving at people. We got to see her Mom on the phone. And then we got more of her driving around the S2000. Then we got to see her talking on the phone. WTF. What about Scott and Helio? At every other race they interview down to 4th or 5th place!! Do you think when (if) Ed Carpenter wins his first race that he'll get the same media response? If anybody thought the ridiculous media coverage of her was bad before....now it's gonna be really bad. She'll be a contender for every race from 10th position 1 lap down.
Oh well.

On the American feed, what I heard them say was that the Anna label could no longer be hung on Danica -- she had won her major.

Indeed congratulations to Danica for winning her first IndyCar race and I'm really happy for her, she has worked hard for this achievement. It could be argued equally that her being a woman has been a disadvantage (prejudice) and an advantage (great marketing tool).
Personally, and I'm speaking as a woman, I just look at the driver as a *person* and judge them on their driving qualities. I don't care much whether they are the first woman, or the first black driver, or the first driver from Colombia, for me ultimately only their driving talent counts.

Guess not. Marco won his first Indy Car race at Sonoma in '06. The media covered it extensively and League PR hyped it to the heavens... but since he hasn't done an SI swimsuit issue yet I guess you missed all that.

Yeah, I must've slept through that. He's been so mediocre since then that I guess I forgot.
Swimsuit Issue?

edit the original post to say 'Ed Carpenter'. Probably a better comparison.

Didn't she finish up second at Belle Isle last year? Not a bad result for someone who is 'quite ****' on anything which is not an oval. I don't think she's the best driver in the Indycar field or anything, but lesser drivers have won on ovals.

That's always been the biggest problem with the Danica sensation - the media frenzy is, if anything, to the detriment of the sport in the eyes of its core audience. That's not to discredit Danica, the accomplishment, or even the significance of it in the least. But focusing so heavily on the one driver during the race broadcast does nothing but risk alienating significant numbers of people *who are already watching*! It doesn't do a damn thing to magically attract the people who aren't watching. Leave it to the mainstream media to pick up the Danica story and obsess over it, but the dedicated motorsports commentary and jouralism circles ought to focus on continuing to report on the sport as a whole and be content with a tip their hat to the accomplishment.
