I'm book marking this thread for when IRL run at Edmonton and Surfers.

Ross is right the relative lap times and performance levels are irrelevant. The fact that a unified single premier category of open wheel racing exists once again in the US is the key point. Nothing else matters.

The Dallara will come to the end of its life and a new car will replace it and the main point will still be that the best open wheel drivers outside the top 10 in F1 will be fighting on the same tracks in the same races.

Some pain was inevitable, but it's nothing compared to the pain another decade of bullshit would have caused.

Comparing lap times out of context is just meaningless.

Anyone else watching this whole Dallara vs DP01 discussion from the sidelines think that *both* sides are comparing apples and oranges?;)

(Basically, neither side has any conclusive evidence and I personally think that both sides need to agree to disagree on this one.)

Personally, it wouldn't surprise me if the Dallara is three seconds quicker at Edmonton, three seconds slower, or anywhere in between. I suppose it would depend on the tire, the track, and the Honda engine tune and aero specs in effect for the race. It truly doesn't mean anything.

I think a faster package would be great for '10, as long as the car remains suitable for all the tracks. I think a slower package would be perfectly fine too. The important criteria are safety, cost, and competiveness. I know we are not going to see a signifcantly faster car because it must run at Indy.

I would also like to see multiple chassis suppliers in 2010, which eliminates styling as a design goal.

That is essentially my point -- that is is an apples vs. oranges comparison. To me it is sort of remarkable that the road course lap times are as similar as they are, in that the Dallara was designed primarily to run at Indy and other ovals while the DP01 was designed for street and road courses. Of course the cars do share a common historical thread, while their weight, size, and power are similar, etc.

I'd like to see open chassis, but spec engines and tires. That way the chassis development war will be down to what the teams can raise in sponsorship, and design themselves; and not OEM subsidy.

Wasn't there a test, I think at Sebring, where the Dallaras and the DP01 raced at the same time ?
I think Robin Miller made a mention to it on one of his columns, but even though he said the DP01 was faster, I don't remember if he gave actual numbers. It was testing anyway, so I guess not much could be said about it, either.

I don't know about the speed issue, but one thing is clear : the DP01 is better looking.

I had met some of the photo and writing staff that came in to cover the Long Beach Grand Prix as a shake down run for 2009 when they take it over ... one of the photographers mentioned that when he goes to Kansas next week, he is going to be dissappointed not to be able to see the DP01's running.

He really, really liked the way the looked and sounded. It all felt a little vindicating to hear him talk.
