Still early day, of course, but Ferrari looks dominant.

 Agreed. Can't see anyone getting near Ferrari here.

I don´t know, but Ferrari looks not sooo much faster to me here?
Kubica is only ~1 second away, so that´s a good sign for BMW on a friday.
Lewis looks quite good for me, I don´t know about Heikki as he couldn´t drive that much.

Massa going 1 sec faster in Bahrain practice was a flaw as that was on low fuel. fair enough he was faster than Kimi but not 1 sec.

yes I agree.

And then again I don´t understand why Kimi was so slow at his second and third outing!

At that time both Hamilton and Kubica were faster.

Funny, but my impression was the opposite, that this could be the first time when they would be REALLY dominant this year. But we will see.

AAAAHHHHH thanks for that, completely missed that link, it's not very well placed putting it in a part of the page usually reserved for meaningless terms/contact links etc.

They need to make that link more prominent.

I wonder if it would help Piquet get closer to Alonso. I don't think this close as we have seen in this FP, but a smoother car might help the weaker driver more than the one who is being able to handle a more difficult car as well. So I will be curious if from now on Piquet will be somewhat closer to Alonso.

As a comment to all, we know the new look may take time to get used to. Sadly, that is the price of progress. One thing I am sure of is that this is progress. I'd struggle to believe that a multi-page forum thread that you had to manually refresh and move through the pages is less usable than something entirely automatic. I should know, I was the heaviest user of the RC-Live threads.

In addition, there are no more adverts on the commentary page when the forum is displayed than there are on the forum pages. For subscribers, there are of course no adverts at all.

We know there are areas to make this better, and we will be working on them.

Please have a go with the new service. If there is anything you don't like, tell us about it in the AtlasF1 forum. However, I'd ask you not to cause confusion by continuing to post in RC during the sessions while the rest of the community is embracing the new live coverage.

Just to make it clear, autosport.com Live for Friday practice coverage and click SHOW LIVE FORUM THREAD in a red bar at the bottom of the page to join in.

Looks like Piquet is on Alonso's heels this time on a track that is not unknown for him like the previous ones.

Just use this one since it's being discussed already anyway.

--------

Spanish GP - Free practice

Barcelona, 25th April 2008

Free practice - First session

K.Raikkonen: 1st 1.20.649 17 laps chassis 270
F.Massa: 2nd 1.20.699 9 laps chassis 267
Weather: air temperature 28/30 °C, track temperature 35/39 °C, sunny.

Free Practice - Second session

K.Raikkonen: 1st 1.21.935 38 laps chassis 270
F.Massa: 5th 1.22.229 32 laps chassis 267
Weather: air temperature 25/26 °C, track temperature 36 °C, sunny.

"Today's two sessions were slightly different to usual for Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro, given that last week it took part in a four day long test session at this track. This meant today's program revolved around confirming the ideas on set-up developed from the test and on a comparison of the two types of tyre Bridgestone has brought here, in terms of their performance over a single lap and on a long run. "All in all, we can be satisfied with the way these three hours of free practice have gone," commented Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Stefano Domenicali. "We got through our planned work load without any technical problems. We can be cautiously confident about the rest of the weekend, well aware that we are up against some stiff opposition."

Kimi Raikkonen: "I am pleased with this first day of testing. We did the work we needed to do and had no problems, this being probably the most positive thing. The balance of the car is good, even if there is always room to improve and its handling was also good on both types of tyre. As usual on Friday, it is hard to judge where we are up against our rivals and I think we can expect a very close fight. The new nose? We wouldn't use it if it didn't give us a little something extra!"

Felipe Massa: "This was a good day. From what we have seen, I think we will be competitive this weekend and we are working in the right direction. Track conditions will improve over the next couple of days. Today, it was a bit on the limit and it was easy to make mistakes. In fact, when I spun this morning, I flat spotted the left rear tyre and that's why I didn't do many laps in the first session, as it wasn't worth using a new set of tyres. I could have posted a quicker time in the afternoon, but I had some traffic on my first flying lap on soft tyres. It's my birthday today and I would love to give myself a nice present on Sunday."

Luca Baldisserri: "We had a good starting point thanks to the work carried out here last week, so we worked mainly on confirming the results from that test. We had no technical problems, which meant we got through all our programme. It is always difficult to make predictions based on what you can see on a Friday, but I think we can be reasonably optimistic about the rest of the weekend."

The problem is, with 1024*768 there is no way you can have quick post and live timing and stream at the same time. It would be much better to move the quick post window to the bottom of the comments.

You would rather have a long window rather than a wide one?
I am sure R&D will have it sorted for the next race.

Wow..kinda sounds like we are working on a car!!

In FP1 Massa spun almost the same way he spun in the Malaysian GP. Weird.

In FP2 Kimi ruined JB's fast lap in a rather unsportsmanlike way.

Ferrari clearly handling better than the other cars today.

Heikki had a problem-filled day.

Aguri turned up.

That's about it really. :)

Can anyone shed some light on the pecking order today? It's a "messy" results-sheet from both sessions, and I'm never able to find the laptimes on the FIA site...

Ferrari are obviously ahead, and by some margin. I guess it's tight between BMW and McLaren, but how is it between Red Bull and Renault? Toyota may be a bit off, perhaps the same with Honda. What sort of weekend are Williams in for?

Funny, Felipe also held up Nico at the end, Nico took the old last corner to get ahead onto the straight, waited for him and messed up his lap in an "as ye sow" moment ...Nico not as soft as Jense, then

I'll answer my own question :)

Ferrari on long stints does high 22's - 1.22.8 ish from Räikkönen.
BMW 1.23.1
McLaren 1.23.2
Red Bull 1.23.7
Renault 1.23.8
Toyota 1.24.1
Williams 1.24.2
Honda 1.24.3
Force India 1.24.4
Toro Rosso 1.24.4
Super Aguri 1.26.3

Looking into all stint-times, I have to say BMW look very good, and I'm sure clear of McLaren, as they traditionally go for a heavier fuel load than most, and sticks to it.
With great one-lap pace as well, I suspect they'll be unthreathened in their position as second best.
I think Williams could also be more competitive than their stints show.

(No offence to any previous thread-starters, but it's much better when we have proper threads to discuss practice, qualifying and the race in. A good round-up of the session invites to a better discussion IMO)

Appreciate that the new service is probably much better but when I am sat at work with a security enabled network I can't access anything that shows live timings - so a thread like this is perfect - especially in the European season when the practice sessions take place in work time (UK). Damn our evil employers for forbidding me access to live comments and sector times whilst I'm busy dreaming of the weekend on a Friday morning/afternoon! :)
