The programme for the Silverstone Classic meeting was announced yesterday, and it will feature 21 races over Saturday and Sunday, with Friday qualifying, and, already, the entries in a number of categories are over-subscribed, which is promising news. A 5-year deal has been signed with Motion Works UK Ltd to take over running of the festival, and their aim is to restore it to the size and prominence of the Coys Festivals of the nineties.

This year, the featured marque is Lotus, holding its 60th anniversary this year, while it will also celebrate 80 years of the BRDC and 60 years of Silverstone.

A few shots from the day's testing - Group C/IMSA, Historic F1 and Formula Junior were the main categories in evidence. Group C does appear to be the 'boom' category of the year with a very healthy turnout.

Great photos chaps!

I'm only going to be at Silverstone on the Friday - I booked my ticket at Race Retro to get the best deal.

It's a couple of years since I was last there (2005) so am really looking forward to the trip.

I read in today's Daily Telegraph that one of the 'star' cars for the Lotus 60th anniversary celebration will be Jim Clark's Indy-winning 38. Surely the first time it will have visited these shores since the mid-sixties?

Mark, both feet in mouth time, it's an unusual colour scheme but an M23?

Unusual? Every McLaren should be orange at least once in its life cycle! :D

M7 maybe Michael, but the M23 only had flashes of Orange in the Yardley strip, however, the M7 was both a gorgeous colour and car, and as for the CanAm cars

Agree, the M7 was most gorgeous, even if I "grew up" with the M23, my first favourite car! :D Looks swell in that colour!

It is the sole McLaren M25. A F5000 derivative of the M23.

Any comments on the Silverstone Classic events?. I have the opportunity to attend this year's event and was wondering about TNF'ers opinion of the event and if it's worthwhile coming over to the UK for it.
Thanks in advance,
Jeff Weinbren.

I used to attend when it was the Coy's Festival and it was always great fun - some good racing and a really laid-back atmosphere in which you could get really close to the cars and drivers. Silverstone is atmosphere-free, but the event more than made up for it.

Just booked my tickets for the Sunday. Haven't been at a historic meeting since FoS 2005. Looking forward to seeing the Sauber-Merc in the Group C race - for some reason those things always really captivated me.

I've the 3 day ticket as well - check out last years thread with the search option ;)

I'm only about an hour's drive away...and I enjoy it. If I lived in Germany I wouldn't bother flying over just for it, but fit it in with holiday plans.

Friday or any day 1ish?

The provisional prog suggest that there'll be the Silverstone & Lotus 60th anniversary track parade and demonstrations each day at 1pm. I'm a 3 dayer, so I can watch it any 1 of 3 days :D

For those actually going to the Silverstone Classic, MotorsTV is replaying all of the 'live' coverage in the following week.

Here is the schedule... MotorsTV 26th July - 1st August

Also programs on Sinsheim, Beaulieu & Schlumpf collections

My girlfriend and I are planning to go there but we haven't purchased any tickets yet.

We are talking about staying over on Saturday so we can watch the racing on Sunday.

So could anyone recommend any accomadation? We are happy with hotels or campsites.

Or is it better to drive up there as we are from Walsall?

From Walsall to Silverstone won't take too long - an hour and a quarter or thereabouts - and there certainly won't be Grand Prix sized crowds.

Better to sleep in your own bed, IMHO.

Advice please oh wise ones; I am going on a fishing weekend in Dorset and Hampshire that weekend( Frome and Test for any brothers of the angle on here ) and find that Silverstone is nicely en route from North Yorkshire to Milton Abbas. So if I leave here at 6 I get to Silverstone at 9 and have until early afternoon to indulge myself.Paddock or practice, stands and stalls or what? Need to catch up with Lotus Seven enclave for an hour (although mine's stopping home that weekend - I value my comfort sometimes) but all suggestions welcomed to maximise my fix.

that is quite a weekend - where on the Test? I live near Stockbridge? I can tell you that it only takes just over an hour from Silverstone and Milton Abbas is 45 minutes (my son is at school there and my prepper is in the next village!!) from Stockbridge

We are staying in Stockbridge and fishing Wherwell.Visited last year and enjoyed it- even though the daily tariff is equivalent to 7 years membership of my local syndicate Up North.

All a bit off topic but I know Wherwell well as I used to live there overlooking the water meadows. What a great weekend you have lined up and send my regards to Bill the waterkeeper... Did you know you can now stay at the Peats Spade in Longstock which IMHO is probably the best pub in the area owned by the former owner of Hotel du Vin chain

Will do and thanks for the gen re Peats Spade.Am now salivating at thought of 1 day drooling over Siverstone bolides and 2 days outwitting trout on water which is , as they say, as clear as gin and twice as expensive....And topped off by a Sunday night curry in Stockbridge- which is whre I suspect Miss Marple lives...

I got their newsletter a few days ago...they've booked ESCALA ( Britain's got talent finalists) to play.
I have vague recollections of classical girl band jazzy type thing on TV - I'll probably give that a look at their early 6pm setting but unlikely to stay for their late slot.

Is anyone thinking about attending a 1pm meet at Ted's pitch?

I live in the next village and you are right she was Nether Wallop and the curry house is in Stockbridge - Purbani - very good too!
To bring this vaguely back on topic, Stockbridge is of course home of Willans race harness' and until recently owned by a man called Fenning who has a formidable collection of single seaters including ex F1 cars as well as the FJ he raced in period. In a 5 mile radius of Stockbridge lives Alan Mann, Don Shead (powerboats and cars), Lydell (cant remember which one raced cars!), and until his death earlier this year the E Type race John Burbage as well as current historic race prepper Foxcraft Engineering and several others so you connection to the area is not so unusual!

Well, they weren't kidding about Motors T.V. I have just set up my Sky + to record virtually solidly from 9.00 a.m. to gone 5.00 p.m. tomorrow with just a short break around lunch-time.

I guess Sunday will be similar. :)

Toby is as brilliant as he is on the Moto GP stuff. Some of the others co-commentators have been ok, some poor. But Toby, for a Bike guy is top notch IMHO. Just wish he had Jules with him too.

Doug, I've just got up after a nightshift & turned on to the BRDC 500 enduro. The two commentators on that didn't seem to know much about the cars OR drivers! Two Strettons in two different cars? Must be the same person swapping? Wrong!

Agreed Toby and Julian Ryder are a joy to listen to on Moto GP on Eurosport , but of course that is where all Toby's great historical knowledge is based. He has said on air that he dislikes the current F1 scene and would never entertain the idea of doing GP car commentary.

I do agree with Gary and Doug there is nothing worse than listening to commentary when much of what is being said is incorrect.

I saw Diana Binks doing pieces to camera there yesterday and understand there is vast amounts of Motors airtime devoted to this meeting over the weekend.

What a terrible waste if they have spoiled the ship for a ha'porth of tar in not getting really 'genned up ' and well organised people to explain to viewers the complexity of what they are watching.
Murray Walker despite his 50 years of broadcasting always did a mountain of research spoke to as many people as was possible in advance and had facts and figures to cover all eventualities on paper in front of him at all times and the results spoke for themselves...how we still miss him, no one since has come close.

I have to say I was very disappointed with the Goodwood FOS programme presentation on ITV 4 this afternoon as well , apart that is , from DCN's contribution which was as usual excellent but sadly ludicrously short.
Then endless ad breaks and time wasting recaps unrelated trivia, my personal opinion something I looked forward to was a right mess, this valuable motor racing airtime is too precious to waste.

What a shame and a missed opportunity. The lack of even basic research not only made them sound like they didn't know what they were looking at [when clearly they did, about some things at least] but rather spoilt it for us viewers who were hoping to be informed. Another thing they could have done which would have been interesting would have been to interview more drivers, and not just..... was it really hot? With such an extraordinary turnout they must have been able to find some 'good old boys' and they must know that the viewers are not just casual motor sport fans.
Isn't it interesting how Murray's voice fits those historic F1 cars?
I shan't bother to watch today but then there is plenty of alternatives.

Sorry to hear that the TV coverage has not been an unmitigated success. There is a select group of commentators around who know about historic racing, and the history of racing, it's a shame that they aren't called up to perform and give viewers factually correct information - or at least have an expert on hand to fill in the details. I'm not quite as sorry as I might have been that I can't receive it.

Well from my point of view I thought the commentary has been very good overall, and the fact that we are having two days of blanket coverage isnt it a bit churlish to be criticising people for the odd slip? Toby for a Moto GP guy is well informed and very enthusiastic, Hindhaugh seemed to know what he was talking about, as did some of the other guys on some of the more specialised 1950s and earlier stuff. Ok Marriot was talking nonsense some of the time during the F1 race (surely that was a Shadow not a Hill?) but even he had the decency to admit he'd called a Hesketh an Arrows. The thing is they are there, they are enthusiastic and they are conveying the magic of the event beautifully - and Toby keeps berating us for not being there in the flesh, which is good of him! ;-) Far superior to ITVs lame FoS commentary.

Think back 20 years people, would we have had anything like this? No of course not, thank goodness for Motors TV and their enthusiasm. Ok they may employ that jackass Carlton Kirby and they have the odd lapse in amateurism but who else shows us Hillclimbing from Gurston for an hour, or rally raids to timbuktoo etc etc?

Well said, Ghinz!

I cannot quite understand anyone who would like to have been there, but was unable to make it, is able to watch it but chooses not to because of the common taters. Smacks of noses, faces and spite. :)
