Silverstone Classic 25-27 July

This year, the featured marque is Lotus, holding its 60th anniversary this year, while it will also celebrate 80 years of the BRDC and 60 years of Silverstone.
A few shots from the day's testing - Group C/IMSA, Historic F1 and Formula Junior were the main categories in evidence. Group C does appear to be the 'boom' category of the year with a very healthy turnout.

I'm only going to be at Silverstone on the Friday - I booked my ticket at Race Retro to get the best deal.
It's a couple of years since I was last there (2005) so am really looking forward to the trip.

It is the sole McLaren M25. A F5000 derivative of the M23.

I used to attend when it was the Coy's Festival and it was always great fun - some good racing and a really laid-back atmosphere in which you could get really close to the cars and drivers. Silverstone is atmosphere-free, but the event more than made up for it.

I'm only about an hour's drive away...and I enjoy it. If I lived in Germany I wouldn't bother flying over just for it, but fit it in with holiday plans.

Friday or any day 1ish?
The provisional prog suggest that there'll be the Silverstone & Lotus 60th anniversary track parade and demonstrations each day at 1pm. I'm a 3 dayer, so I can watch it any 1 of 3 days

We are talking about staying over on Saturday so we can watch the racing on Sunday.
So could anyone recommend any accomadation? We are happy with hotels or campsites.
Or is it better to drive up there as we are from Walsall?

Better to sleep in your own bed, IMHO.

Or the bed at your Grandma's guest room in nearby Witney - that's what I'll be doing! (Can't wait... hope the weather holds)

Need to catch up with Lotus Seven enclave for an hour (although mine's stopping home that weekend - I value my comfort sometimes) but all suggestions welcomed to maximise my fix.
that is quite a weekend - where on the Test? I live near Stockbridge? I can tell you that it only takes just over an hour from Silverstone and Milton Abbas is 45 minutes (my son is at school there and my prepper is in the next village!!) from Stockbridge

All a bit off topic but I know Wherwell well as I used to live there overlooking the water meadows. What a great weekend you have lined up and send my regards to Bill the waterkeeper... Did you know you can now stay at the Peats Spade in Longstock which IMHO is probably the best pub in the area owned by the former owner of Hotel du Vin chainOriginally posted by john aston
We are staying in Stockbridge and fishing Wherwell.Visited last year and enjoyed it- even though the daily tariff is equivalent to 7 years membership of my local syndicate Up North.

I have vague recollections of classical girl band jazzy type thing on TV - I'll probably give that a look at their early 6pm setting but unlikely to stay for their late slot.
Is anyone thinking about attending a 1pm meet at Ted's pitch?

I live in the next village and you are right she was Nether Wallop and the curry house is in Stockbridge - Purbani - very good too!Originally posted by Cirrus
I think Miss Marple is a resident of nearby Nether Wallop - no curry houses there!...
To bring this vaguely back on topic, Stockbridge is of course home of Willans race harness' and until recently owned by a man called Fenning who has a formidable collection of single seaters including ex F1 cars as well as the FJ he raced in period. In a 5 mile radius of Stockbridge lives Alan Mann, Don Shead (powerboats and cars), Lydell (cant remember which one raced cars!), and until his death earlier this year the E Type race John Burbage as well as current historic race prepper Foxcraft Engineering and several others so you connection to the area is not so unusual!

Toby is as brilliant as he is on the Moto GP stuff. Some of the others co-commentators have been ok, some poor. But Toby, for a Bike guy is top notch IMHO. Just wish he had Jules with him too.

Agreed Toby and Julian Ryder are a joy to listen to on Moto GP on Eurosport , but of course that is where all Toby's great historical knowledge is based. He has said on air that he dislikes the current F1 scene and would never entertain the idea of doing GP car commentary.
I do agree with Gary and Doug there is nothing worse than listening to commentary when much of what is being said is incorrect.
I saw Diana Binks doing pieces to camera there yesterday and understand there is vast amounts of Motors airtime devoted to this meeting over the weekend.
What a terrible waste if they have spoiled the ship for a ha'porth of tar in not getting really 'genned up ' and well organised people to explain to viewers the complexity of what they are watching.
Murray Walker despite his 50 years of broadcasting always did a mountain of research spoke to as many people as was possible in advance and had facts and figures to cover all eventualities on paper in front of him at all times and the results spoke for themselves...how we still miss him, no one since has come close.
I have to say I was very disappointed with the Goodwood FOS programme presentation on ITV 4 this afternoon as well , apart that is , from DCN's contribution which was as usual excellent but sadly ludicrously short.
Then endless ad breaks and time wasting recaps unrelated trivia, my personal opinion something I looked forward to was a right mess, this valuable motor racing airtime is too precious to waste.

Isn't it interesting how Murray's voice fits those historic F1 cars?
I shan't bother to watch today but then there is plenty of alternatives.

Think back 20 years people, would we have had anything like this? No of course not, thank goodness for Motors TV and their enthusiasm. Ok they may employ that jackass Carlton Kirby and they have the odd lapse in amateurism but who else shows us Hillclimbing from Gurston for an hour, or rally raids to timbuktoo etc etc?

I cannot quite understand anyone who would like to have been there, but was unable to make it, is able to watch it but chooses not to because of the common taters. Smacks of noses, faces and spite.
