Here on Spain it has been developed a similar procedure to get oil out of algae.

It´s between 25 and 100 times more efficient than taking it from plants as you can produce it into tanks and the algae grow at an amazing rate.

This is a similar idea but using bacteria. I am convinced that this kind of ideas are the future till we get fusion power.

An if we get oil in the future, we will still able to have F1 :lol:

Why don't we have them get into particle physics? Power the cars using perpetual motion machines?

Everyone bitches about the money, yet wants them to solve all the worlds problems by having them all of a sudden develop world leading capabilities in completely new areas.

What's wrong with using an 8,10,12 cylinder fossil fuel powered internal combustion engine?

F1 doesn't have to jump on the bandwagon of every new fad that comes along. Let it be.

How is that a fad? It's a new technology to help find an existing product. It doesn't fix the environmental issues, but helps significantly with the economic ones.

It does say in the article that the petrol produced by OIL 2.0 will be carbon negative so it is addressing one of the environmental issues.

What about using the natural excretions of the drivers for power or other uses?

For example--the driver's head is just beneath the air intake--his sweat could be collected and used for a short burst of water injection. I don't know how often they pee in race but that could be used, too.

The natural oils that form in the face and hair--lubricants? Dust collecting grease? Fuel?

Heck, hair itself combusts, no? Have 'em all do Nick Heidfeld impressions between races; the virile Italian stallions would be in great demand :love:

There is a slightly eccentric individual called Adam Hart-Davies who appears on British TV at fairly regular intervals presenting programmes about technologies... "What did the Victorians do for us?" etc.

He used to appear on a folding bicycle, and in one programme he said that the bike was fuelled exclusively by the food that he had eaten and was a pollution free form of transport, except when he had had baked beans for breakfast!

I was referring more to these ideas people keep coming up with to change F1 completely. In this case the suggestion is that rather than being racing teams, the "teams" move into bioscience. How much money do you think an F1 team would have to pump into making this idea workable? On top of their existing budget of course. 200m a year? For how many years before it was workable? Half a billion?

Everytime a new scientific "breakthrough" comes along which promises major changes for either the environmental or economic concerns associated with the 750 million cars on the planet, people always jump up and down and want F1 teams to start doing it straight away. Yet we all know that the transfer of technology from F1 to passenger cars is minimal and the timeframes are long.

I'd just rather F1 teams worried about making their cars go faster and winning races than growing algae. You can't solve the worlds problems just by throwing F1 teams at them

Although that would make for a cool movie

But what about a formula/technology where F1 can be used as the test lab for road bits? Instead of being developmently declined and inefficient and nothing more than a 'brand halo' they could actually do something more interesting, that would give them a larger following, and access to more sponsors/manufacturers.

The trick will be to see if the bugculture thing can be upsized and be economically effective. If it is.... Then the dump becomes an oil refinery.

I also suspect that they could engineer a lot of the emissions out of the fuel (or depending what it eats make it more envirofriendly), which would be I suspect would be easier than engineering the bug to make oil.

In order for a perpetual motion machine to work at 100 percent efficiency, one has to eliminate friction. So far it hasn't been done.

Of course even then it couldn't actually "create" any energy to propel a car. For that you'd have to break a law or two of thermodynamics. :kiss:
