So, in the article about Alonso saying he could win a race this season, his final quote is...

"Maybe the podium possibility is not too far but we need some luck probably and to have a very good qualifying tomorrow," he added.

"Our normal race will be fourth or fifth with Hamilton probably behind us...we need to take the points and we are ready to take them."

What do you think he means about Hamilton being behind him?

First, it's difficult to tell if he's talking about race results or qually.

Is this just a "psyche"? Prediction about Hamilton's fuel load?

I'm confused...

Lewis has a 10 grid penalty for the incident in Montreal.

I'd say he's talking about the race, it's the only way it makes sense :)

There's nothing unusual, weird or incoherent about those statements you've pasted here.

Alonso feels very confident. One may say he was lucky in Canada during Qualifying because of bad conditions (he actually coped with them, and many other drivers didn't), but this time it seems he can achieve a really good result on his own merits. GL!

I think based on today's practice he is feeling comfortable that he can beat one of the BMWs and Kovalainen who was no where in Canada. Lewis is starting from at least 10, maybe 12/13.. That's boosting his confidence for this race. He does mention that he will need some luck to get a podium, meaning a DNF of some soft from one of the Ferrari's or Kubica.

This confidence is quite strange from Alonso, he always downplays the team's performances in practices or qualis, and this year he's often said 7th or 8th place would be good in the race... And now he considers 4th or 5th to be "normal" results.

That can mean two things, Renault hasn't improved but he wants to seem positive as this is the French GP, home race for Renault, or they've really found something (his quali in Canada was really good and he wasn't that much slower than BMW in the race)... Hopefully he'll have a decent race this time.

I really don't think he's saying that - unless red cars mean Toyotas.

Welcome to the BB.

I miss Alonso being up the front of the grid. Hopefully he moves to RBR alongside Webbo next year and at least we can see a ding dong battle behind the front guys. IMO Fred needs to move around the field and continue to show just how good he is vs everyone else to remove some of the stigma McLaren left him with last year.
