Great lap from Kimster:up: , even though the director decided not to show much of him in qualifying.

Massa should be decently happy, he has a great platform from which to challenge for the win.
Ferrari would like both these guys to have incident free first lap, though. :stoned:

Kovalainen is the best number two Lewis could have asked for. Lewis is supposed to take the penalty here, this was Heikki's chance, and he shows that he is simply not quick enough. :

Both Toyota drivers will feel that they underperformed in the final part.

Great job by Fernando. :up:

Nick Heidfeld ought to retire. NOW. Or perhaps BMW need to kick him out. :rolleyes:

Nelson Piquet also mediocre. Sigh.

Hamilton as always great ! I think top 3 is posible.

Congratz Raikkonen.
I want to say because I dont like him but very nice Alonso. Hamilton is much better but today Alonso qual good.
Trulli very good.
Kovalainen - I thought he will fight for top 4. Bad qual. He isnt close to Hamilton who is great always.
Kubica - lol of the day. He is light and slow all weekend. Propably he think he is a star after Canada and he lost with pression.
Webber - as always full of fuel.

Heidfel - bad luck. He need car for him not for Kubica. Shame for BMW because he is better driver and they should build car for him not for points scorrer.

Ferrari ain't that bad today. I expect Kimi to safely grab the win tomorrow.

Very bad driving from Hamy considering the Mclaren should be quicker on one lap...

Don't know what was up with BMW :confused:

Hamilton is probably not extremely light, but we will see.

Kova's strat is probably not compromised to favour Lew1s.

Fred is probably only marginally light, and not as much as what most people think.

Lets see what happens tomorrow

Ferrari's 200th pole position, well done ! I didn't expect us to be that dominant, Raikkonen didn't even end his flying lap.

Interesting Hamilton again preferred the hard compound over the soft for his flying lap. Kovalainen again couldn't pose a threat for pole position and Heidfeld even struggled to get into Q2 :

Ferrari 1-2 will be 90% sure for tomorow. Kimi for win most probably.
Alonso 3, he has a good chance to take the last slot of the podium. All he have to do is to maintein the position after start, because Trulli will make the rest of the job for him.
BMW very disipointed. Worst, Kubica will start on the dirty side of the road...
Hamm must pass Haidfeld and Piquet to have a chance, very hard for him tomorow.

Nelson did pretty well. Only a couple of 10ths behind the flying Fernando.

Nick was only a couple of hundredths behind Robert in Q2. Unfortunately they placed him on the wrong side of the cut-off.

Everything seems to be coming together for Timo Glock.

I'm a little puzzled by Heikki.

Massa looked very dejected in the press conference and said he over drove and made too many mistakes which means hes lighter than Kimi.

Hamilton made another one of his offical apologies to the team for his poor qualifying so he was definately light and just stuffed up. Hes in real trouble tomorrow.

Great stuff from Alonso, P3 and with a good start should get a podium.

As usual the Mclaren hype of being a match for ferrari collapes. They havent been on ferrari's level all season no matter how much they talk themselves up. Heikki miles from Ferrari on most probably the same fuel load.

Sir, that is nonsense. Teams build the cars that they feel will be the quickest, and the drivers adapt to drive them. Kubica was already showing Nick to be second tier driver during the latter half of last season , although it did not show so much in points.

Did BMW suddenly 're-design' the car last year as well so that R.Kube would be the quicker driver? :rolleyes:

And if indeed the car is designed to favor Kubica (as if...), it would seem that the team is in the right direction since they are far quicker this year than in past.

Nick is an even bigger disappointment than Nelson. The sooner BMW get rid of him the better it will be for them. :

Strong qualifying by Ferrari, Toyota, Red Bull and Alonso. I'm very curios to see how heavy some cars will be tomorrow. The gaps were very small today. Except for Räikkönen winning to Massa all other positions are to be fought for pretty intensively tomorrow.

FM did two mistakes IIRC and that costed him the PP.
Congratulations to KR, great work from his team to save one lap.
Men of the qualifying: FA and KR.
BMW suspiciosly slow, NH especially bad.
HK quite slow as well.
LH - hard work ahead of him tomorrow.
Williamses quite slow, pity.

Ferrari by far the best car, as all the time this season (Australia and Monaco notwithstanding).

He`s in trouble no matter what, 11 or 13 doesn`t change that much.

Heikki, I don't what's wrong with him, but he's showing nothing of speed
Hard race for Williams, we will see how race setup works for Nico
And Ferrari will win 1-2 tomorrow

I think all the drivers were rather error prone today, it just seems that the driver who usually makes the least got the pole. But we cannot be sure since we didn't see Kimi's laps.

In particular, I really liked how most of the cars were slithering and sliding as they launched from the chicane into the start-finsih straight. Fernando Alonso was just spectacular there.

A second tier driver? Please. The 2008 BMW suits Kubica better and he's taking full advantage of that.
Kubica probably has more ulimate potential than Heidfeld, as people are putting the Pole in the same bracket as Hamilton. But Heidfeld isn't second tier, he's just having a very, very difficult year.

Hard to predict anything other than a Ferrari 1-2 tomorrow.

Toyota have been surprisingly quick, BMW of course surprisingly slow. Heidfeld doesn't deserve a drive in a BMW.

Interesting how free practice would have had you believe that Torro Rosso was quicker than Red Bull, with Webber having spent long periods being the "slowest" of the four. Yet in qualifying, the Red Bulls are 8 and 9, the Torro Rosso's are a disappointing 13 and 14, and Webber is the quickest of the four.

Either Renault took a good solid step forward in developement or they cut a lot of wing from their cars, I don't recall them being so firmly placed on speed trap figures.

Yes even BMW chose to go with the primes. Most teams have had a problem with the options over a single lap as well as over a stint, while Ferrari seem to have made it to work.

It is looking good for a great intra-team battle at Ferrari. 1-2 looks almost certain, but can FM turn the tables on KR ala last year?? He has never won against KR from a lower grid position (pole syndrome??) but there is always a first time. Who knows it might rain tomorrow which might totally change the race. Kimi: great pole lap, he even saved some fuel for tomorrow and probably secured a longer stint than Massa so he may have him covered.

Massa must have made a mistake,a pity that having qualified better in q1 and q2, he dropped to 2º en q3. But it's hard not to make a mistake ever.

Hamilton: he didn't have the best of qualifying sessions but he fixed it up at the end, nevertheless it's gonna be a tough race for him tomorrow since he starts 13th, behind men like Heidfeld, and with the ones after him well loaded. The rain and SC are his best options for a podium.

Alonso: now it's evident Renault have improved and he pulled out a few good laps in every round, he doesn't look lighter than the others, I still feel he could've done a little better since he made a mistake in the exit of the final chicane. Lucky to be on the clean side tomorrow, he can fight for the podium.

Trulli: impressive, by looking at the car and how difficult to drive it seems, impossible to qualify that high, very good job. Dirty side, but still can try Alonso in at the start.

Kubica: struggling this time, BMW is losing ground to competitors, even if they are leaders in both championships. It's only a result of others' mistakes. But they are still competitive, maybe he can fight for the podium.

Kovalainen: this driver is disappointing me more and more, at the beginning of the season I had my doubts he could compete with Hamilton, now it's obvious he can't. With the 2nd best car in the grid he's not been able to qualify top 3 so far, usually 5th to 10th.

Heidfeld: no TC, no Heidfeld. Next year slicks might help him, if BMW don't give him the boot.

From the comments abovem, several posters are ready to boot out more than one driver. Who is there to step into cockpit? I think team managers would be the first to get rid of a driver if they thought there was a hot shot in waiting.

I think that he is on a 2-stopper whereas Ham is on a three-stopper.

Don´t know about Ferrari.
When they don´t crash into each other (remember Flippi is always very agressive against Kimi at the start) a 1-2 should be possible.

I had to miss qualifying so I dropped in here to see the results. Nice job from the Ferrari team and others. I'm tiny bit disappointed with Kova; he needed to put in a better showing today, no matter what the fuel load.

This has happened several times when Mark has struggled through practice and then pulled the rabbit out of the hat , last kick of Q3. Is it his identification of setup problems, or his engineer's or maybe they need the data from DC or Torro Rosso to get the car set up? because last night he had no idea where to go with the car and said so.
Whatever it was a good turn around and well done Red Bull.

Gaps from Q2 to Q3:
Raikkonen 1.288 - Said he wasn't comfortable on low fuel in Q1/Q2, so probably doesn't count for much.
Massa 1.449 - Two stops?
Hamilton 1.400 - Said he lost 3 tenths in Q3, so either 2 stops with a very short 1st stint, or 3 stops
Alonso 1.357
Trulli 1.558
Kovalainen 1.305
Kubica 1.314
Webber 1.745
Coulthard 1.772

Then the system works.

It will cost you to break the rules, and it appear to punish Hamilton (and Rosberg), if it starts raining tomorrow Hamilton can still win, if it stays dry and Kimi finish 1st or 2nd, then Hamilton is paying for taking Kimi out of the points in Canada, as he should.

Very good Q by Ferrari, Magny-Cours is notorious for no overtaking, anyone outside top 4 on the grid have history and statistics against winning the race, so either of the Ferrari's or Alonso for the win, I can not see Trulli winning it.

Alonso looks good.

BMW is struggling on this track, Heidfeld will not get it together in this season for Q, he can simply not get the tires warm enough, possible that BMW should try load him a little more on fuel and let him circle 3 or 4 laps before he try to nail a time.

Both Red Bulls in top 10, good showing and the continue to show that Piquet is just not there as a F1 driver.

Glock makes it in as well, and he is having an okay rookie season.

HUGE disappointment for Williams, they should have been much higher in Q, and Rosberg will now start from the rear, which unless it rains will mean impossible to make points.

We will need rain for the race to be interesting at all, if it stays dry the positions after lap 3 will hold, except for messup in pits, or incidents on track.

F1 needs rules and tracks that will allow overtaking.

He's light and knows he should have snatched pole/11th

Massa wasn't too happy either suggesting he knows he's lighter than Kimi

It's no surprise that HK qualified below LH (at least in this event) since doing anything else would knock LH one spot further down - although this might just be down to a poor performance by HK

I wonder how McLaren are going to orchestrate LH getting ahead of HK...
