It appears as though Lewis Hamilton's rumoured deal with Reebok is already done, and is worth £10 million.

He's been appearing on behalf of the sneaker company in Amsterdam today, complete with 3D hologram of his likeness.

This is how the Daily Mail sees it:

Just three days before the start of practice for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, 23-year-old Hamilton was busy in Amsterdam being unveiled as Reebok's new sporting ambassador in a deal reported to be worth up to £10million over three years.

I was under the impression that McLaren generally frowned on individual sponsorship deals.

I think when Lewis was renegotiating his McLaren contract last year he was in a position of great strength. So he no doubt added clauses giving him the freedom to seek greater personal endorsements than McLaren allows. Schumacher did his own deals with Nike before ditching them for Puma.

10 million for 3 years is a small endorsement deal. Basketball stars in the US get show deals and make 20 million a year.

1. The amount was in pounds not dollars.
2. This is just one income stream that LH will get from endorsements.

Hamilton was in Amsterdam for a promotion for sponsor Reebok, and said he felt relaxed ahead of his home race this weekend - the British GP at Silverstone.

Hamilton looked set to win the Canadian GP in Montreal before crashing into the back of Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari after the safety car had come out. He said he was "unfortunate" at Magny Cours. He was penalized 10 spots on the starting grid in France, and then got another penalty for an illegal manoeuvre during the race.

"I haven't had any lack of concentration," :rotfl:

"If anything, I've been more in form in the last two races than I ever have before." :lol:

"Bang, bang! Two penalties. What can you do about that?"

PS the story says "up to" 10 mill over three years That means 10 mill if he is WDC three years on the trot otherwise it is just free sneakers for the next three years, even at that it is chump change compared to what a real star champion athlete would draw.

So he was focused on Kimi's backside when he hit him? By his own words "I haven't had any lack of concentration,"

I'm sure when he was leaving the pitlane in Montreal he was concentrating ... just not on what was ahead of him :)

I think it is a significant deal. I wonder what other current drivers have a personal endorsement deal of this size?

Kimi has Tag Heuer, but who else has a personal sponsorship worth £10 million in addition to their existing deals with the team?

I think it shows that, regardless of what he has acheieved in his short career, Lewis Hamilton is already the marketing force in Formula One.

I have a feeling we'll never see the Schumacher level of wealth being showered on F1 drivers again. Kimi's present contract with Ferrari is the last big-one, more rational, penny piching type contracts are the wave of the future.

Well said, it won't be long until everyone knows he is not champion material, someone who cracks under pressure like him can't be a WDC unless McLaren pull a Williams 97/Ferrari 04 and their car is 1-2 secs faster than everyone else's.

So make the most of it while it lasts. ;)

I wonder how the Reebok branding will be applied?

Will there by any visible sign of Reebok on Lewis's suit or boots or gloves?

To my knowledge all his (and McLaren's) racewear is provided by Sparco.

He has always worn Arai helmets.

Or does this Reebok deal only cover activities away from the track, involving streetwear.

And how would it conflict with McLaren's other clothing deal with Hugo Boss?

Lewis is also an ambassador for Tag Heuer and appears to now wear Oakley sunglasses.

That's one racewear label, one sportswear label, one men's fashion label, one watch label and one sunglass label all attached to one great racing driver.

Good one him, his wardrobe and wallet must be bulging! :clap:

That will come down to the technical regs. If the cars still are the dominant performance differentiator in the package then certainly i think you are correct, however if the regs bring more emphasis towards the driver then the driver will increasingly get more money. Currently in F1 unless you have one of the top 3 drivers in the sport who can make a quatifiable difference in performance or development then the rest are pretty even in terms of performance.

Maybe the way the regs are going this may change as slicks and "standardised" aero along with removal of TC and EB may shift more weight towards the driver.

you'd be surprised how many products you yourself and your friends and family wear and consume that come from sweatshops, and that are produced in unfavorable labor conditions.

Forgive me, but I didn't start this up to be a fan thread or a bashing thread.

I honestly thought it was an interesting talking point.

It is a massive deal and a sign of Lewis's growing commercial stature in the sport.

Currently it seems to be a constructive thread with not much bashing, and long may that continue!

I'm certain you didn't and I agree. But did you expect anything less? The minute Slategray and Johnny Bravo see the initials LH they start foaming at the mouth.

What this proves beyond any doubt is that despite the small and distorted sample of people on the BB voting Lewis as 79th most popular current F1 driver the real world thinks otherwise. He's a positive image both for F1 and for the sports moneymakers, regardless of what people here might like to think.

It's up for debate what the 'real world' thinks. Reebok almost certainly do not inhabit it.

It remains to be seen if their investment is a wise one or not. I mean what if Lewis continues this dreadful run of form? 10M for an image associated with failure wouldn't look good.

F1, unlike most sports Reebok is involved in, is really dependent on the equipment provided to the driver. If Lewis gets dog cars he's simply not going to be up there and his image is going to suffer.

Anyway, as a Ferrari fan this is good news. Lewis burning the wick from both ends just means he'll be less of a consistent threat on track.

Well the Tag Heuer deal is part of McLaren I think, the guy who owns 25%(ish I don't know the proper figure) of Mclaren also owns Tag Heuer.

I don't accept money from them and globally promote their wares though. I am also accutely aware of how companies treat their workers and try to avoid known sweatshop brands.

He has a brilliant corporate image. Probably a very attractive one. After all he ought to when his whole image has been carefully crafted for it. But what appeals to companies and to real world people aren't always the same.

What Reebok see as a text book image to associate themselves with, others see as increasingly shallow, contrived and boring.

Time will tell though. Either way, his build up to the British Grand Prix has been as hectic as any he's had testing last week, he's met with Nelson Mandela 3 times in four days, he had that infamous sailing trip where he was left dehydrated, exhausted (and didn't sleep that day). He's had media engagements, McLaren sponsor engagements and of course now this reekbok thing in Amsterdam.

It's worth £10M over five years for 50 days work (10 per year). Really when he's making 75M from McLaren, living in tax exile, does he really need extra money? Why?

Why not take that 10 days per year for himself? When you're that rich, operating with precious spare time as it is, why on earth do you need more?

And this is my biggest problem with Hamilton, or at least my perception of him and the way his 'brand' is being managed. It seems all about the money... His image handcrafted, shallow, cynical, contrived. It's all about presenting himself to companies not to fans. He's so image concious, his dad is so financially concious. It makes it hard to take him at face value as a racer. He's not a racer, he's a product.

And I really don't like that.

You can't walk into an Abbey Branch without seeing a cardboard cutout of Lewis, or watch an ad break without seeing a Lewis Airfix model jump into a car and drive off the desk, or have him driving up on pavements to promote mobile phone networks and he's got another personal sponsorship with Learjet(?) too.

All these marketing guys are clearly not that smart then. If only they'd come here and have the coffee grinds shoved up their nose.

I don't even think Michael was anywhere near as blatantly geared towards commercial exploitation as Lewis.
