The forthcoming ‘Weekend of Automobile Excellence in Reims’ is already warming up, with 120 car and motorcycle participants and 200 club cars so far registered.
It will be a chance to see, close-up and in action, classic competition-winning vehicles from the glory days, like Irishman Eddie McGUIRE’s Gordini Type 23S, driven in 1950, 1951 and 1952 by Jean Behra, Maurice Trintignant and Robert Manzon, the HWM Stovebolt Special from England, driven by Stirling Moss in Reims in 1950, when he finished third, the Maserati 250F belonging to Germany’s Klaus Edel, driven by Roy Salvadori in the Formula One World Championship from 1954 to 1956, as well as Belgian Lucien Bianchi’s Ferrari GTO.
Meanwhile, the Delahaye Type 135s and Bugatti Type 35s will remind nostalgia-lovers of the glorious past of the Reims-Gueux Circuit and its first Grands Prix de la Marne.
Almost half of those already registered hail from the four corners of Europe (England, Italy, Luxembourg, Greece, Switzerland, Holland…). To welcome this colourful line-up of nationalities, a few modifications have been introduced both on the technical and the sporting level:
Access to the circuit and joining the starting grid: An asphalted entrance and exit have been created, allowing for a better organisation of the starting grids on an appropriate surface (see the attached plan).
The chicanes: On the track, their number will be reduced by at least a third. They will be wider and have reflecting plastic so that they are visible from a distance at night. At each of them, there will be a run-off area if needed, in order to avoid mechanical damage.
Following numerous safety improvements, you will notice on the attached plan that the chicane in front of the stands has been taken out. As a result, cars and motorcycles will be really accelerating on this ‘resonating’ part of the circuit, allowing the public to enjoy the impressive sound of these exceptional engines and recalling the golden days of racing at Reims-Gueux.
The ‘Toto-Roche’ Paddock: An asphalted area near to the starting grid will accommodate low chassis cars.
Licences for Drivers: as was the case last year, official demonstrations necessitate that drivers:
§ Either hold a competition driving licence which is valid for 2008 and is issued by an assocation recognised by the FIA,
§ Or obtain a Regularity Participation Title provided at the venue by ASA CHAMPAGNE.
