Hello! I am Antonio Correia, a motorsport archivist from Portugal. I have made some collaborations with Darren Galpin in order to update his database. The main objective of this posts is to complete the info about the career of a racer (F1 or not) and, later, to create a little article about the rider:

Hasemi, Masahiro (Jpn)
b 13/11/1945 (Tokyo)

1976 - 11th Japanese GP (Kojima). Fastest Lap....
1980 - Japanese F2 Champion
1989 - Japanese Touring Car Champion with A.Olofsson
1990 - Japanese Sportscar Champion with A.Olofsson
1991 - Japanese Touring Car Champion with A.Olofsson
1992 - Japanese Touring Car Champion with H.Fukuyama. Won Daytona 24 Hrs (Nissan R91CP) with K.Hoshino & T.Suzuki
1995 - Japanese GTs (Nissan): 4th Suzuka

You can delete that fastest lap, by the way, it was a timing mistake - or, rather, a mistake in processing the info from timing and scoring. :)

And it wasn't the Japanese Grand Prix, either... :p

The above lists only open wheel events; if you want info on all his races in Japan, follow this link:

http://www.jaf.or.jp...?c_famous_no=32

Shows his last race to have been 2000-10-22 at Suzuka, in a (Nissan?) Skyline BNR34, finishing 8th (with Tetsuya Tanaka). If you always follow the last link on each page, it will bring you to his earliest races, beginning with 1966-09-25 at Funabashi, finishing 17th in a (Nissan?) Bluebird SSS - humble beginnings, indeed!

So this means "SpeedStar (Wheel) Racing" was (again) just a sponsor for Hasemi's team?

Hasemi had car #5 and sometimes there was a SpeedStar Racing #6 car too.
Do you know if this was also a Hasemi Motorsport entry? (Yoshi Tachi, later Jeff Krosnoff)

Or what about Krosnoff in the #5 Speedstar Racing car after Hasemi retired from driving F3000 cars?

Hasemi started his racing carrier with motorcycle race when he was fifteen years.
He joined Nissan Ohmori in 1964.
Nissan Ohmori was a second Nissan works team.
He moved to Taki racing team in 1968.
He returned Nissan works team in 1970.

A lot of history books to re-write... Seems like I read somewhere once that he did that time on qualifying tires or maybe full wets (can't remember the conditions for the whole race) - just to try for the fastest lap.

I must admit that's how I was always told about that fastest lap. "Not going to win, stick some qauli's on it, and get something", I think I might be dissapointed if that didn't turn about to be what happened! (at least it wasn't someone waving a clip board in front of the timing beam). The Kojima is actually a very nice looking car, maybe it's the black finish!

As far as I now

Officially Hasemi got a fastest lap but it might be mistake.
His Kojima F1 had a serious crash during qualify.
Mr. Kojima and his friends made another chassis.
But machine condition was terrible.
Hasemi could not run so fast during the race.

Unfortunately, I can't really say! :( Japanese teams are somewhat mysterious, and it's very difficult to follow them from race results alone. And I don't have much of anything else to go by! :

Actually, I should have put a question mark behind each entry in the car section! :o

My French is not fully up to Bruno's posting, could someone please follow his plea and translate, s.v.p.? :cat:

EDIT: I think I get the gist: no one knows for sure, because of changes in weather?

Anyway, here's my stand on things: according to official figures, Hasemi's fastest lap was recorded very early, when conditions were still VERY bad, so the time in itself doesn't quite compute. Furthermore, the lap chart showed Hasemi to lose two positions on the VERY lap that was supposed to be the fastest - now you don't need to be Einstein to figure something's fishy here!;)

Thanks for all contributions till now. I am a portuguese archivist so I haven't much things to share. But I will try to participate more in the discussions. I have the portuguese magazine of the Japan GP nad Hasemi finished really back. I also have BBC Race Video.

I'm sure it's not the first (or only) time an "error" has been written down in the record books...

Does anyone remember Hasemi from the 1973 BSCC?

http://homepage.mac....0Ingliston.html

I was an eye witness to the above - 19 years old, standing at the fence up at South Stand, which leads on to the straight before the Hairpin, but it's only tonight, after reading the above link, that I've found out what actually happened - previously I've always just assumed that the big Chevy simply swatted the tiny Datsun against the barrier - inadvertently, of course...

That wouldn't have been Frank Gardner's style anyway, and I probably did learn the true story all those years ago (the Datsun broke a steering arm on the kerb) - funny how time distorts your memory. It's still frustrating, though, even after so long - Hasemi was everybody's hero that day - it was one of those races where you could hear the crowd above the engines - and I suspect even big Frank felt sorry for him.

Alright, so it was only a round of the BSCC, and not the Japanese Grand Prix, but it was still a race, and I was there!

Excellent photos by 'Pedro 917', btw. Never knew what Hasemi looked like, and the Kojima was an elegant device.

I'll just away and edit the post on the thread about Ingliston now...

Did anybody ever bottom out the question of his fastest lap in the 1976 Japanese GP? Did Lafitte actually do a faster lap?

I believe it was a mistake, the Hasemi's fast lap. But it also said that he had advantage in the rain due to his Bridgestone tires, so I don't know in which of the many theories I'll believe.

He also competed in Australia, 1982 James Hardie 1000 at Bathurst. Finished 8th o/r and 1st under 3 litre in a Bluebird Turbo, completing 153 laps out of 163.

He was there in 1981 as well... it was said that Hasemi went with a mile or so of putting the Bluebird on pole in 1982, with a turbo letting him down on the run down the Hill.

from grandprix.com:

"In 1980 he achieved a grand slam in Japan by winning the four major national championships; the All Japan Formula 2, Suzuka Formula 1, the Grand Championship sports car and All Japan Formula Pacific series."

=> Never heard of Suzuka Formula 1. What was that?

Hasemi, Hoshino and Takahashi were perhaps the best of the lot that entered F1 in the pre-Nakajima years

I really wonder why Hoshino especially never drove a whole F1 season...

I think the Japanese were quite isolated till the 80's. Even Nakajima arrived on Europe too late, because he had more value than it seemed.

I'd like to know more why these isollation, because they had pretty good drivers on sportscar and single seaters, and they had also great marques.

As I recall there was talk of him running a third Williams at Suzuka in 1987. Then again so was Geoff Lees rumoured for that one.

He also had a test with Williams.
