This event commemorates the ten years of motor racing (cars and bikes) that took place at Lobethal in the Adelaide hills between 1938 and 1948. Also the site of the Australian Grand Prix in 1939. The winner of that Race Alan Tomlinson will appear at this event.
I'm about to step out and head off for a fun and nostalgic day.

The Milano MGB Special. An MGB underneath, with supercharged engine. The glass
fibre body started life in Sydney, widened to fit the B monocoque.
Asto Martin DBR2 replica with Jaguar engine. A very nicely done car, built up in
Queensland and now resident in South Australia.
Listed as 'Alfa Monza (Type)'. Don't know this car.
A beautifully done Allard J2 with, according to the owner 'correct' front AND rear wheels!!
A very pretty Riley special. Again, I don't know this car.
Those who attended the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide will recognise Glen Dix.
Still waving the flag too fast for my trigger finger.
These last three shots are of the 220SL. I will find out more about this car if anyone is
interested. But for now, this was its first public appearance after a restoration lasting
some 6 years. It was acquired, derelict, from Macau where, I believe, it spent most of
its life previously. It was one of (I think but I'll find out) six built by the factory with a
2.2 litre 6 cylinder engine and (I think but I'll find out) there are three remaining.
The Mercedes Museum (This I do know because the then curator told me) does not
have one. It has been restored in Adelaide and this is where it will live.

Built up using a six cylinder engine and two extra exhaust pipes...

Boeing Stearman flown by Ivor Paech: part of an excellent "vintage" aeroplane flyover on the Saturday.
Sunday's wind was too strong to allow safe use of the nearby grass strip. unfortunately.

And here's the 'down and dirty' side of the MG R(acer) of the Bucknell family... what a car!
Chris said he was able to get a run that let him go to about 85mph through Charleston. He certainly enjoyed himself, as you can all well imagine.

It is a pity this event clashed with Bathhurst. I would have liked to have gone but too many events on the same day was a problem.
I believe that this was a precursor to a full on event next year? Who knows?

The engine of the ocean liner tailed Chev. Mechanically prosaic, but it motored quite well.
And the MG R rear end (taken at Vintage Collingrove the previous weekend) - simply beautiful.

I seem to recall a car called the 'White 500' being listed in the CAMS Manual somewhere...
Might be in the list of cars that have won the Australian Hillclimb Championship. Could this be the very car?
Those last pics, along with some posted in similar places yesterday, remind me that it's going to be imperative to know the ways around at future events. Getting to see the cars on different parts of the circuit is important, I feel.

There are two direct roads to access Charleston and my location at the bridge near Hartmann & Jungfer Roads from Lobethal - but only from a position inside the circuit. It's a big circuit, and not easy to get "everywhere". Best thing is what we're doing in this thread - share one's shots with everyone else.

With sponsorships, the Tipo B which ran here in 1939 is booked to take advantage of that International travel availability for the next event... as is Allan Tomlinson and possibly others.
With regard to moving between points during the day, I think it would be a good idea if this was a central part of the information given in the programme. Some of the diversions around the town were long and complex, a system could be worked out to give spectators an even better time.

As for moving about the track I took the view that with the road closures it really did dictate that you needed to content yourself with one good vantage point close to one of the temporary Beer Gardens set up at various locations around the track. The Northern Hairpin was one such place so in company of brother and some friends we enjoyed the spectale and a number of Coopers' finests ales.

It appeared at Morgan Park in August in the hands of a new owner who had the misfortune to do a head on job into a concrete wall doing quite some damage. It was then entered for Speed on Tweed a month later but I don't recall seeing it there. I would think that Kevin Shearer's car bears no relationship to the Dick White Special.
This has been a great thread and my sincere thanks to those who have posted pics, must try and get there next year. I liked the JAG FORD which I haven't seen for many years.

Hi fredeuce, thanks for the photos. I was running my PRAD Holden & I can honestly say that those who competed here pre & post war were really titans of aussie motor racing. The track is awesome and leaves no margin for error. Tree lined roads and lots of other dangers such as wire fences to injure yourself if you make an error! I can only surmise that the roads were smoother than they are now as my car was being pitched about by the bumps. The last run for packet 2 had a really keen police motorcyclist who was laying it over through the corners and got up to 100mph plus on the road into Charleston. Great fun but we were not racing!
Dick if my memory is correct I believe the White 500/1000 was repowered with a supercharged VW in the late 60's early 70's & won the Aust hillclimb championship. The success of Dick White then inspired Paul England's car and Ray Cann then repowered the Cann Vincent to supercharged VW & also won Aust hillclimb championship.

Intersting story about the "White". Below is a pic of the Ray Cann/Ian Wells/Kev Rohrlach car taken at Collingrove Easter 1971. They do look different however.

Hi onelung, yes it is long & narrow as the chassis is a modified HRG. Started life as a "Bathurst" model HRG bodied as a single seater. It was interesting to compare it with the HRG 1500 also there. You can still see the mounting points for 1/4 elliptic front spring mounts made redundant when Jack Pryer constructed the independent front end utilising Holden & Standard 10 components. Clever blokes Jack Pryer & Clive Adams!

Voila - the track layout.
Looks a bit like Spa-Francorchamps, though: right after the start I can see Stavelot, Blanchimont and La Source, even a little Eau Rouge wiggly bit, Kemmel straight and the left before Burnenville, which itself is a bit "sharp" : And on the "bottom" straight even a Masta kink! Brilliant!
