How to search for a relative's old car?

Sorry if this is a little off-topic, but back in the mid-1960s, my grandad owned a 1947 Morgan that he had for a very short amount of time. This car was a little more special to him than the other cars he owned, such as the Marina, Princess, MG Montego... :rolleyes:

He would love to be reunited with the car as he has a lot of memories of it.

What would be the best way of locating it?

I have the registration number from an old photo and a quick (free) check on www.mycarcheck.com suggests it still exists and must be registered with the DVLA.

Would it be worth trying to contact, for example, the Morgan owner's club?

I've just searched for three of my father's old Fords and none of them come up as still existing.

I've paid for the car check on one of those HPI check websites, and the following information has appeared:

Make & Model: Morgan

Former KeepersL: 0 (Current keeper has held the vehicle from first registration)

Plate Transfer: There is no record of this registration being involved in a plate transfer.
Scrapped: There is no record of this registration being scrapped.
Exported: There is no record of this registration being exported.
Stolen: There is no record of this registration being stolen.
Stolen & Recovered: There is no record of this registration being stolen & recovered.
Insurance Write-off: There is no record of this registration being written-off.

It is registered with the DVLA so surely it means it exists? And as there's no record of it being scrapped, perhaps the same owner has had it since before the DVLA database was compiled in the late-1980s? If it had been scrapped before the database was compiled, then it wouldn't be in the database.

Don't know if this will duplicate the same info, but you can search the DVLA records (under 'vehicle enquiry') if you have the registration and make. It will tell you when car was last taxed.

It was red and black when my grandad sold it in c1965 for £95. IIRC he only paid £25 for it.

Seems to be taxed until April 2009...I wonder who has this old car! It was the first car my grandad ever owned. So many fond memories...that car took him and his best friend to the 1964 British GP at Brands Hatch. It would mean so much to him if he could be reunited with it.

Talk to the DVLA. There is a form, IIRC, which can be downloaded 885???, by which you can ask to be put in contact with the current owner for a valid reason, of which there are several eligible, identifying your interest. In view of the age/marque here it is unlikely that the present owner would be so churlish as not to respond

Bradbury's suggestion sounds very sensible, but it's worth getting in touch with the owners' clubs, too. My dad managed to trace one of his old bikes after a one-off chat with someone at a Norton owners' club stand at a show. The bike was in Denmark.

I would go so far as to say that most owners would be pleased to hear from a former owner of their car. That has certainly been my experience with the various car histories I have traced
