Just finished watching the first of 2 volumes of the cracking DVD.
Anyone else seen them?

They are home movies made by a member of the Tate & Lyle sugar family (and ex Spitfire pilot) in '53/54 (the second volume being of '55) as he toured Europe in his DB2/4 following the GP and sportscar races - Le Mans, Rheims, Goodwood, Silverstone, Aintree, Silverstone etc.

All shot from public areas or pit wall (he seems to have beenvery much in with the 'in crowd') and in a mix of 8mm and 16mm, B&W and lovely colour.

Will watch disc 2 tomorrow.

And where did I find this gem? - the garden centre for £4.99 each!

excellent fillers for your own stocking!

Good aren't they? I found mine in a charity shop in Keswick, again £4.99. I think at least a couple of the charities are selling them.

I bought them all bit by bit on VHS a few years ago at somewhat more than £ 4.99 each, but still worth what I paid, particularly for the in car laps of Spa, Reims, Le Mans etc taken from John Tates car. The commentary is done by his son Chris who remains very involved with motor sport and IIRC appears on the film as a small boy.

I bought the volume featuring the 1967 French GP on VHS several years ago. I now wish that I had invested in the others at the same time.

They are excellent, I especially like the AMOC club meeting stuff - Snetterton in 1953 and the St.John Horsfall Silverstone club circuit footage from the mid '50s to 1966. There's even colour film of Doc Merfield's Fraud Cortina.
Lovely big bangers too, the Martini trophy in mid '60s.

Talking of Big Bangers, has anyone else got the new Duke release 'Big Bangers at Brands'? Fantastic period film now on DVD of the 1965 Guards Trophy won by Surtees in the T70. Superb stuff.

The original series on video was a total of 15 hours of footage, could this fit onto 2 DVDs? These were later available on DVD under the misleading title F1 Legends.

I bought volumes I, II and III in a box set from the tourist information shop in Hawkshead, for £15.00. So no, it won't all fit on two disks!

I only bought the last volume and a long while back too, as my main racing interest commenced with the early 70's era when I was very young and impressionable.

I watched it long ago and still remember being struck by a wonderful irony in one of the narrator's comments; something about how being at Silverstone for the '73 Grand Prix made him realize that F1 had changed so much and was no longer that appealing - while this for me was the 'real deal' era of Grand Prix racing! I remember this when I encounter someone who is passionately into the current (post 2000) era. It's the old case of horses for courses!
