You'd have been just the man to handle that rig at speed, KB! I've seen you at work!

Camera mounted on car by Wally Willmott in the day

Wally will now explain this picture:
Somewhere in Hong Kong a Clint Eastwood lookalike fires a fake rocket. You quickly come to the realisation in the film industry that nothing that you see should be taken for real.

Using skills I had learnt in those days at McLaren, I put together a kit of bits that would allow me to quickly position a Camera where ever the director wanted it, and was lucky enough to get some amazing jobs.

Wally Willmott finally getting a chance to drive the McBegg
Posted Image
Wally in the pits waiting for his run.

Here are Wally's thoughts on getting to drive the McBegg on a demonstration run:
The ‘Demonstration Laps’ at the Speedfest meeting were a good chance to get a feel for the car after having spent many weeks with Jay Esterer fine tuning and fettling the thing.

Bearing in mind that the organisers would not have been best pleased if I had let it get out of control, and the right foot of a 71 year and 11 month old Wildman had to cool it as I was Very keen to see my 72nd birthday.

Given that the thing has more power at your disposal at any given point in time than tire traction can handle, it is quite docile now, and most of the rough edges are gone. Masses of torque mean that you really only need 3rd and 4th gear for a very fast lap of Teretonga, and with the steering, gearshift, and brakes all working very well it is no longer as frightening as it was on those first few drives that I had in it – in fact after 4 laps I was starting to really like it to the point that I could have had the organisers on the edge of their seats and reaching for the red light button – so I made it back to the pits and parked it, much chuffed.

Indeed - amen to all the above - Wally was a great bloke and he will be very much missed.  So sad that of the original 1963-64 McLaren team he and Robin Herd should both succumb within just hours of each other.

Sincere condolences, to Wal's family and many, many friends and admirers...

It's ironic that this wonderful thread comes back to life on the passing of Wally - if my maths correct he turned 78 last birthday. His passing must also mean the early members of Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd are all back together. Indeed the end of an era.

We can thank Jerry Entin for starting this thread and getting some tales from Wally. Jerry will know better, but from my brief comms with Wally a decade ago he was reluctant to post his tales on TNF himself. He did however post on his native Kiwi motor racing community, The Roaring Season.

This is one of his TRS tales worth telling to celebrate Wally and those adventures that took him from Timaru to all parts of the motor racing globe.

"The day Michael is alluding to was the Monday after the British GP held at Aintree in 1962.
Jimmy had won the race for Lotus, and Bruce came in 3rd.
I was at the event owing to a misfortunate event for Coopers - but another blessing for me - when their transporter had tossed a rod out the side of the motor on the way up from London in the middle of the night, and the Tommy Aitkins Transporter and trailer were called in to assist.
On the Monday morning Bruce had suggested that I come with him and Patty (in the back of his Mini) and he/they would show me the sights of Blackpool on the way home. Jimmy overhearing this suggested that he should come along as well for a bit of fun, and we (in the mini) followed him (driving his Lotus Elite) out of Liverpool and on to Blackpool.
It did not take long to take in the ‘High Lights of Blackpool’ and its amusements and Jimmy led the way as we headed back to London. A few miles down the road we passed Jimmy who had been stopped by the Police and was getting a long ‘talking to’.
Bruce pulled over at the next Lay-by and we waited for Jimmy.
When he arrived he was still laughing.
The Constable had let him off with a warning for doing 35 in a 30 MPH area after a long dressing down. He had told Jimmy (having no idea who he was) that
“You young fellows of today have no idea of the danger of speed, and when you get into your fancy cars you all seem to think that you are Stirling Moss.”
He got the “Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss.” for a long time after that."

My condolences to Wally's family and friends.

Stephen

Stephen: Wally didn't like to blow his own horn as they say.

I hadn't seen Wally in many years, I was told he was helping Jay Esterer at Mosport for a Vintage race that I was attending. I went over and told him who I was and we had a great weekend together.

Wally told me the one thing he would like to do was get in touch with Gary Knutson. I put them in touch and did a story on the Forum on Gary with the help of Vicki Knutson.

I told Wally the forum members would enjoy hearing his story. Wally agreed to help with his photos and memories. And that is how this site got started.

I was working at Geoghegan’s the closest that I ever came to a Lotus was Assemblying them at Geoghegans in the late 1960,s.

I was lworking with Bob Everett who was Manager of the Service Devision, Wally Willmott ex Bruce McLaren Mechanic & the late Barry Lake.

Willmott was to be part of a McLaren set up in Australia with I believe Frank Matich at the helm, Wally asked me to join them but the untimely Passing of Bruce brought an end to that project.

The Stories Wally told we had never heard of before, the blunders, stuff ups & how with commen sense they were overcome, then there were the stories on the Drivers, not going there but some were a lot different than what was being Published, they actually turned out to be Human.

For some reason when he working at Geoghegan’s Wally all ways had time for me, making suggestions on how to do something on a car but why to do it this way or that to achieve the correct outcome.

The best advice he ever gave me was showing me short cuts that he had devised in finding what was actually wrong with with a car that was in dire need of repair, some so simple.

I can remember being in awe of this man his position in the McLaren organisation but did not understand why he drove a rundown never washed red Min Van, he told me why, you can all ways find a parking spot, it is amazing what they will carry, cheap to run & very rare to be flogged, advice on days from the UK.

All this happened in 1969/70 so many years ago each of us going our way, then a few years ago I heard that he would be in Australia again assisting a NZ car at Easter Creek, so off to Eastern Creek I went on a Wally hunt, we met, he remembered me & we spent the best part of half an hour remembering gone by days, he remembered, blew me away.

The main thing that I wanted to know was the setting up of the McLaren establishment in Australia, how close was it to actually happening, Wally told me it was all go but the untimely loss of Bruce was it’s end.

Thank you my friend for all that you installed in me with your humour, wisdom & belief in life R.I.P my friend. Daniel

Thanks for reminding me Jerry of the time I spent with Wally at Traco's shop in So. Cal. Even though we were faced with an insurmountable  task and an impossible time frame, we still managed to have some fun along the way! Wally, Tyler Alexander and myself had rented the bottom floor of a house on the beach at Playa Del Ray which was only a couple of miles away from Traco's in Culver City. Jim Travers (the Tra of Traco) and his wife lived just a few doors down in a similar house. I guess Jim's wife felt sorry for us as she used to invite us over for dinner on a regular basis. Needless to say with the task at hand, we didn't spend much time at the beach! That was the last time I saw Wally but we managed to keep in touch (thanks to Jerry!) in later years. Lots of great memories from those days......

Wally Willmott along side Buce McLaren in the Mk 1A McLaren

This car was built at the Feltham Shop and Bruce was trying an automatic transmission in it.

In testing with the Ferguson automatic transmission which was based on the Hewland HD Type gearbox the seals seemed to fail and leak fluid all over the place. The torque converter was misaligned with the engine it is thought  and the auto transmission was blamed for two engine failures and the whole project was finally abandoned.

I had the pleasure of meeting Wally when he was at the Mosport VARAC event assisting Jay Esterer with his 2 McLaren Can Am cars. I was working on a buddies Lotus 61 a short distance away in the paddock. Luckily our weekend was trouble free so I spent more time chatting with Jay and Wally than otherwise might have been possible.

Definitely was an enlightening weekend hearing war stories from Wally, watching him fiddle with little things. I ended up getting my hands dirty helping them patch up the front bodywork after Jay had an "off".

I feel privileged to have had the opportunity presented by that weekend. Thanks Jay for bringing Wally to Canada and making it possible. Thanks Jerry for this thread, keeping his memory alive.

Does anyone know where in Perth this was taken?
Could this place be what later became a Bob Jane station?

Rod Styles' garage corner Sussex Street and Albany Highway East Victoria Park Perth WA. On the other corner (it is a T-junction) was Sid Taylor's dentist business, and it was Rod who built the TS Spl (Taylor-Styles). The McLarens put up with Sid Taylor on their visit. Very low budget! (The garage is long gone, now a Westpac Bank Branch; the dentistry is long gone, now parking area for a shopping mall).
