Here are Kenny Smith and Frank Lyons having a chat.

Frank Lyons has come to New Zealand from England.
Ken Smith has won the F-5000 group Historic events held in New Zealand the last two years running. He is going for what we call the Hat Trick. That is 3 wins in a row.

Kenny Smith is 67 years young and all us old guys on the Forum hope he shows the Historic crowd the way home as they say. His racing group is called the: HISTORIC RACING CLUB/NZ FORMULA 5000 ASSOCIATION

Wally Willmott is currently at these Historic events and is sending the Forum members these pictures to enjoy.

The word "vintage" applied to these sort of cars seems quite acceptable in the US, but not in New Zealand, which prefers the British definition

David: Wally Willmott corrected me and I have changed the title and the wording in my post.

And David if you attend any of these events could you post some photos for the forum to enjoy. In Michigan where I am now it is in the teens. I know the weather in New Zealand is slightly better.

Stuart: I agree, it is a very nice looking car.

Today/tomorrow is the Christchurch Casino Lady Wigram Trophy Meeting and coming up is the Skope Classic part of the Southern Festival of Speed, which has been held at Levels (Timaru) and Teretonga (Invercargill) but this year I believe at Ruapuna.

275GTB 4: Here is a nice interview by Kenny Smith given in 2006 where he says he was 65. So he could be approching 68. I have been told he was 67. I could be wrong.

I don't want to dwell and there is no agenda here, but...

"Smith began his racing career with a Ford 8 special before moving to one of NZ motor racing’s most famous cars, Bruce McLaren’s Austin Ulster. That was in the mid-1950s,..."

So...say he was born 1942, that means he would have been a 13-14 year old lad racing "in the mid-1950s".

I think his first season was 1958/59
Can't turn up his DOB at the mo', but I think he was 16 when he started - in NZ in those days you could get your licence at 15 (don't know if that's still the case)

Report just in from the NZ F5000 Association:

There was drama in the first MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series race at the Christchurch Casino Lady Wigram Trophy meeting at Christchhurch's Powerbuilt Tools Raceway this afternoon as American visitor Jay Esterer (McRae GM1) turned the tables on fastest qualifier Tony Richards (Lola T332) and series points leader Ken Smith (Lola T430) after an all-action first lap.

Richards got the jump on fellow front row starter Smith and fifth fastest qualifier Esterer as the 17-strong field thundered away from the rolling start only to have Esterer rocket past both and into a lead he was destined not to lose on the short straight between turns one and two.

That was just the beginning too, as first Ian Clements (Lola T332) then Smith spun, Clements exiting turn 2, Smith turn 7.

While those around him managed to stay on the track when Clements spun, all hell broke lose when it was Smith's turn, with Richards and a closely following Stan Redmond (Lola T332) spearing off the track to avoid Smith, whose Lola T430 ended up prone in the middle of the track.

Incredibly, the following pack managed to avoid Smith and as the dust cleared he, Richards and Redmond were able to continue and though he had to wait for the rest of the field to pass before he could get back on the track celebrated New Zealand veteran Smith set the fastest race lap as he worked his way back up to sixth at the flag.

With Smith, Richards and Redmond forced into fightback mode, Esterer went on to claim an easy debut New Zealand win from sixth fastest qualifier Sefton Gibb (Lola T332) and the man driving the sister car to Smith's, David Abbott.

Clements made his way back to fifth at the flag, Smith sixth and Redmond 11th.

Unfortunately both Stuart Lush (McRae GM1) and Tony Roberts (McLaren M22) were early meeting scratchings after mechanical problems (a broken half-shaft in Lush's case, a malfunctioning oil pump in Roberts') after qualifying, and top race prospect Roger Williams (Lola T332), who qualified fourth, didn't make the grid after his car's clutch failed as the Auckland man tried to leave the pits.

The Christchurch Casino-backed Lady Wigram Trophy continues tomorrow with a second race in the morning and the final Lady Wigram Trophy feature race in the afternoon.

This weekend's meeting marks the beginning of a busy month for the MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Revival Series contestants, with the fourth round of the 2008/09 series at Pukekohe on the January 24-25 Auckland Anniversary weekend and the fifth and final the weekend after (Jan 31-Feb 01) at Taupo.

Kenny Smith's mother and sister were here at Ruapuna today - seen here talking to David Abbott. Kenny's mum is 92 and turns 93 in March - she still attends most of his races and is as bright as a button.

Frank Lyons with Richard Box

The container containing 3 cars for Frank Lyons A T400 for him to drive, A T332 for his wife Judy to drive and his Gurney Eagle 5000 for his son Michael to drive, also Mark Dwyers T400 and Phil Maugers M23 F1 McLaren, was delayed though shipping confusion and is currently sitting on a wharf in Melbourne.

Thanks to a generous offer from Noel Atley - owner of the 018 Begg - at least Frank had a drive for the weekend.

Seen here with Richard Box, a local lad who has just spent the last year in England working for Frank and is now home to start a Race car maintenance business.

Roger Williams Lola T-332
I meet Roger Williams last summer at Elkhart Lake, where fellow forum member Duncan Fox was helping him. He finished a very fine 2nd at Elkhart Lake in a very large F-5000 field.
I know in the first race he experienced clutch problems. I am expecting Roger Williams to show way better form in the coming races. He is a very nice young man and a credit to the Formula 5000 group.

Yes it is...no passengers and one licenced driver only in the car with you though

Sorry to learn that Frank Lyons' cargo is still stuck at the docks. Frank and his family are stalwarts of the historic F5000 scene in the UK and his three cars would have added to what already looks like a great grid. A very generous gesture by Noel Atley to provide Frank with a drive.

No restrictions in 1960 - you just got your licence and you could take your whanau with you - choice

The Chevron B-32 #9 listed as being at these races belongs to Hamish Paterson. It is my fault that I didn't look at the picture that well when I was posting it. I have corrected it above. It came to me mislabeled.

In 1972 Sid Taylor and I helped Brian Redman run his Chevron in the states in the F-5000 series there. I sure should know a Chevron when I see one. Thank you for the correction.

A dramatic days racing it was. The 6 lap warm-up just before lunch had Jay Esterer again blast past those ahead of him at the start and using his engines prodigious power he stayed ahead to win on the road but was docked 10sec for a jumped (rolling) start, dropping him to 6th. Certainly he was VERY aggressive at the start but as the race progressed Roger Williams (T332) and Ken Smith (T430) were hounding him through the twistier bits - Esterer braking noticeably earlier, and slower through the corners, only to blast away accelerating out of corners.

Clouds gathered all afternoon but it wasn't until the final warm up lap for the Lady Wigram race that the rain began to fall, with the cars very quickly sending up rooster tails. Red flag and into the pits for wets (except Roger Willliams and Aaron Lewis who didn't have any and were forced to sit the race out. David Abbott discovered his front wets did not fit on the car, but went out anyway circulating very bravely on slicks. Esterer had to use hand grooved slicks that his team had prepared that morning).

After all the build up Ken Smith blasted away to a solid victory, though had to survive wildly changing conditions to do so. Showers came and went until finally a deluge dumped itself over Ruapuna, forcing the race to end at 13 laps. Behind him Tony Richards was steady, Ian Clements and Stan Redmond recovered strongly from early spins, and Esterer came a ballsy 5th spending much of the race sideways on his grooved slicks.

Tony Roberts, who had blown a motor late yesterday, seems to be playing a game of 'Hands On' with Graham McRae, and Jay Esterer.

Jay Esterer had no 'proper' rain tires and so when the rain started and the cars were called in to change to 'Wet's' he fitted a set of worn slicks that Graham McRae had hand grooved for him this morning 'just in case'.
He did very well to complete race distance, and in his words "Had some very hairy moments."

Very wet start to the Lady Wigram Trophy race

Our great and much loved reporter Wally Willmott has got to the mystery of the real date of birth for Kenny Smith. Wally got the answer from Ken's mother and sister. He was born August 11, 1941.

In Wally's words:
"When Ken Smith won the rain shortened race today he returned to the pits to a hero's welcome. A most popular and well deserved win."

A little off this subject how many Begg 5000s were made?
There was one here in South Aust owned by Alan Knitsche, is that FM5 that car as my very dim memories it looks similar.

HISTORY REPEATS AS SMITH WINS LADY WIGRAM TROPHY RACE FOR A THIRD TIME

History repeated itself at the Christchurch Casino Lady Wigram Trophy race meeting at Christchurch's Powerbuilt Tools Raceway at Ruapuna on Sunday as veteran New Zealand racing driver Ken Smith won the Lady Wigram trophy race and with it the coveted Lady Wigram Trophy for a third time in four decades.

He did it in style too, starting the rain and hail-lashed Trophy race late in the afternoon from pole position and pulling away from the 13-strong MSC New Zealand F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series field until the race was red flagged on the 13th lap.

"I'm no lover of the rain but honestly, " Smith said afterwards, " it was magic out there. Just magic. And being in a Lola again, it was just like 1976 all over again."

That year Smith won his first Lady Wigram Trophy for the first time behind the wheel of the Lola T332 Formula 5000 single-seater he used to contest the original Tasman Series that season.

He won the Trophy for a second time 14 years later behind the wheel of a Swift DB4 Formula Pacific car and a third time today - 33 years to the day after winning his first - behind the wheel of the Lola T430 he has been driving in the MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series for the past two seasons.

Making the occasion even more auspicious was the fact that the car was tended this weekend by Barry Miller and Phil Richardson, two of the mechanics who worked on the Lola T332 Smith used to win the Lady Wigram Trophy for the first time back in 1976.

Lee, Im thinking you may be thinking (!) that the blue car shown in these photo's is a Begg FM5, when in fact it is a McRae GM1 - due to the fact that they were very similar in appearence to the casual eye. Both had the 'classic coke bottle' mid chassis bulge, made that way to centralise the weight of the fuel load. Both were inspired by the McLaren M19 F1 car - as Graham McRae has said if McLaren had been willing to sell him a M19 tub for him to graft an F5000 motor onto he would never have built the GM1. And George Begg worked for McLaren for a few years, and as the story goes came home to NZ with a few useful items from their superceded parts bin !!

There were around 15 GM1's made (in the UK to Graham's design), and only 2 FM5's (which were made in NZ in Drummond (southland) and Christchurch). NZ is doing well to preserve the heritage of these machines - there are 4-5 GM1's in NZ, and a Begg FM2, an FM4 and FM5 still being raced / demonstrated regularly.

Great thread Jerry (and other contributors)! I am looking forward to being behind a camera at Taupo in a couple of weeks time where (as at Pukekohe next weekend) there will be a full multicamera (6 - I think) TV coverage - delayed on SkySport.

Does anyone on the thread know the comparisons for power with the same cars in the mid 70s? I rather gather that there has been a very significant increase with metallurgy and lubricant improvements.

This picture captures the 'atmosphere' before the Lady Wigram Trophy race got under way-those black clouds had moved across the circuit and dumped rain just as the race was tostart - everyone came in for wets, and within 15 minutes the wind changed and the clouds came back dumping torrential rain !!

I would bet my left knacker that horsepower is up on the old days Muz...not to mention lubrication and tyre technology :up:

Kenny Smith and his best girl at the trophy presentation.
Also in photo are Kenny Smith's crew members Barry Miller and Phil Richardson. They were with Kenny Smith in 1976 when he also won the Lady Wigram Trophy.

Jay Esterer had a very high profile crew chief at this event.
Graham McRae himself, a very welcome sight at these Historic races.
Graham McRae was the Tasman Series Champion three years in a row, from 1971 to 1973, also taking the US F5000 Championship crown in 1972. He was the 1973 Indy 500 Rookie of the year to name just some of his accomplishments.
