no I don't find them any ugly anymore,

look at the cars of last year.. all those stupid little wings... now that was ugly!

As Barrichello was doing an installation lap at the start of practise 1, as he was going through turn 11 he told his race engineer Jock Clear "I can see myself on TV, and the wheel covers look ugly."

He's right though. Fluoro yellow, and the front ones arent round and dont turn.

I still think they should widen the front width to 2000mm (but not for the end wheels).

OK so today was my first serious look at these new Grand Prix cars, and I must say these are some seriously ugly cars. The proportions of the wings are just...fugly. This after I had spent the previous weeks looking for and at gorgeous Grand Prix cars in the 'Days Left Till The Effing Australian Grand Prix thread. So many lovely cars from years of history to scroll through. These new cars looked like they've been beaten with the ugly stick. For Heaven's sake couldn't we have dropped the front wings down to the ground where they belong but keep the width within the front tires, as has long been the case? WE'e still have increased down force at that end. And If the goal at the back was to reduce the way the wings and the diffuser work together, why not just do away wth the diffuser altogether, or at least amuch smaller one. while keeping the nicely porporioned low wings. Either front or rear, the wings shoud extend to the inside of the tie abd no furtherWatching these cars is like a poke in the eye. Ugh

They look hideous front on. Only thing that makes up for it is the slicks... but they look strange on the tiny back wheels.

Have to agree, the contrast with the old gorgeous shapes is total, these cars are awful to look at, I haven't got used to them at all. Some shapes are naturally beautiful, these are just naturally ugly - everything is wrong with them, from the front wing back.

Apart from the over-wide front wing, I quite like the cars.

It's nice to see clean lines once again after all those fiddly bits have been removed.

With the slicks and the tall and narrow rear wing they bremind me a bit of the cars from the late '80's early '90's period.

My eight year old, an avid fan, since the age of four stayed up late for his first glimpse of F1 in 09. The Renault came into view and the first words out his mouth were, "Dad that car is UGLY!" :lol:

Two weeks ago I saw a documentary on Belgian TV about May 8th 1982 at Zolder.
Also a lot of footage about the 1979 Ferrari 312T4.
They called that car ugly back then.

Compared with the shovels of today, that T4 was dropdead beautiful....

By the way, I do agree that with taking off all those sidepod fins etc. that was a step in the good direction with respect to the looks of the cars.
The only one.....

So is it just me, or is everyone else already used to the new look of F1 cars. In fact, I really like the cleaner designs, though I wish the wheel covers (I miss glowing discs) and engine cover fins would be banned.

I turned on the Indycar race yesterday and thought the cars looked very dated after seeing the F1 race earlier in the day.

I just read back through this thread from mid January. Tales of woe! The ugliest cars ever, or words to that effect. Well if you go back through GP history, how about Max Mosley's March 711X. Ronnie Peterson drove one in fluoro red STP colours with an oval coffee table disguised as a front wing cantilvered UP from the nose cone! Fortunately we never had to get used to 20 of those running around for 100 minutes every other Sunday.

But returning to the topic directly, NO these 2009 cars are generally not seriously ugly. The best looking (eye of the beholder stuff) are from McLaren, Williams and Brawn. The Ferrari and Toyota are also quite attractive but the paint job on the BMW accentuates the rather ponderous looking front wings. In fact the paint jobs do a big part in defining the visual impression of cars as they speed through the TV frame. Brawn's front wheel aero devices look like they belong to a scalextric set. Couldn't they paint them gunmetal or similar?

The great looking cars of their eras included Maserati 250F (1950s), Lotus 49 (60s), Lotus 72 (70s) and then gradually through the 80s and on the cars conformed to a more and more similar silhouette and paint jobs defined the visual imoression. The radical shake out has given a breath of fresh air with different ideas around the "problems" but visually the cars are thankfully now much less cluttered. I like them a lot but I like the feeling that this year we are going to see cars following closer through the turns and it seems to be happening.
