The Paris-Roubaix is, of course, a very famous cycle race but from 1898 to 1901? the race catered for motorcycles, the most competitive of which were the tricycles - the fierce three-wheelers that could often humble the voitures in races on the continent at the turn of the 19/20th century.

Despite searching the net I can only find references to the pedal cyclists. Does anybody know anything about the motorised section, such as entries and results?

I thought I did...

All I have however is a note for the 1898 race saying "see Autocar 1923" - and I no longer have 1923 Autocars

According to Pierre Chany, historian of the bicycle, cars (in 1897 & 1898) et three wheels motorized (in 1897,1898 & 1899) were used only as entraîneur,in english for drafting ?,so there are no results. Were présent Charron et René de Knyff. In 1899,the winner was Albert Champion ( 19 year old !) who create later Champion sparking plugs and AC.

As you say the mentions on the web imply that motorised vehicles were used for pacing which was undoubtedly the case but Rose states that the first motor-cycle race was won by Degrais in 7 hours and 29 mins in April 1898. Could it be that this race was on a different day to the cycle event?

On 11-12 May 1898 the race for motor-cycles, Paris-Bordeauux, was titled the Criterium des Entraineurs and the Tricycle class was won by Jean Corre on a de Dion-Bouton. "Le Velo" organised this race as well as the Paris-Roubaix. Maybe the Entraineurs had their own race from Paris-Roubaix?

I finished reading Charles Jarrot's "10 Years of Motors & Motor Racing" recently and I seem to recall him mentioning this event. I'll have to get the book out again and have a look. He was a keen 'tricyclist' if I can use such a term! He was also a competition (pedal) cyclist too, so I hope I don't have my info crossed...

Lots of Bicycleracers became later car drivers or had something else to do with motorsport.
Some names; Albert Champion, Henri & Maurice Farman, Henri Fournier, Thaddäus Robl, Jack William Stocks, Selwyn Francis Edge, Jean Marie Corre, Fernand Charron, Ugo Sivocci, Ralph DePalma etc.

From Paris-Roubaix I have
1-5-1898: 1. Degrais (De Dion) 180 miles/ 7:29
2-4-1899: 1. Osmont (De Dion) 180 miles/ 5:35.30
0-0-1900: 1. Paul Baras (??) 52 entries. 19 starters

For early motoracing (bikes) you may try

The date of the bicycle races
1898 10 April
1899 2 April
1900 16 April
1901 7 April

So perhaps the tricycle races were on 16-4-1900 and 6-4-1901 (if there was any).

Are you sure Jean Marie Corre won the race?
I thought he was 4th and driving a Fouillaron with Dion engine
(He was director of the Fouillaron compagnie till 1901)

12-05-1898 I Criterium des Entraneurs ´Paris/Bordeaux´
1) René de Knijff - voiture Panhard
2) Fernand Charron - voiture Panhard
3) Breuil - voiture Panhard
4) Jean Marie Corre - voiture de Dion ( Fouillaron )

I don't see the problem. The first three were cars, so Corre was the first motor(tri)cycle as the picture shows.
