Bernie and co created this 'cruise and collect' issue they're trying to fix when they increased the value of 2nd and 3rd compared to 1st. The FOTA proposal would have restored some increased value to 1st over 2nd and 3rd and may have incentivised drivers to push for a win. We won't know this year if that's true or not.

So, in previous years we've had an AQUA (Atlas Quite Unlikely Alternative) thread. No need for one this year, as the WDC will be determined by something very similar.

I thought that instead we should track the points for WDC and WCC using the FOTA proposal, and see if there are any major differences come the end of the year. Might be fun :).

In addition to the various petitions and facebook groups etc. maybe everyone could copy and paste my statement below into their reply.

I refuse to acknowledge the FIA WDC and will instead regard the FOTA World Champion as the rightful F1 Champion 2009.

If it takes a forum on Atlas to make F1 "interesting again" ... well to paraphrase Shakespeare - "There is something rotten in the state of F1"

Bringing this back, even though the new system was delayed a year. Let's see where FOTA's proposal would have the points table before Spain, along with change from their real total:

[codebox]Button 12 6 7 12 37 (+6)
Vettel 12 9 21 (+3)
Barrichello 9 2 5 4 20 (+1)
Trulli 7 2.5 7 16.5 (+2)
Glock 5 3.5 2 2 12.5 (+0.5)
Webber 1.5 9 10.5 (+1)
Hamilton 1 3 5 9 (+0)
Alonso 4 1 5 (+0)
Heidfeld 4.5 4.5 (+0.5)
Kovalainen 4 4 (+0)
Rosberg 3 0.5 3.5 (+0)
Raikkonen 3 3 (+0)
Buemi 2 1 3 (+0)
Bourdais 1 1 (+0)

Brawn 21 29 12 16 57 (+7)
RBR 1.5 21 9 31.5 (+4)
Toyota 12 18 2 9 29 (+2.5)
McLaren 1 7 5 13 (+0)
Renault 4 1 5 (+0)
BMW 4.5 4.5 (+0.5)
STR 3 1 4 (+0)
Williams 3 0.5 3.5 (+0)
Ferrari 3 3 (+0)[/codebox]

Note - I *think* these numbers are correct, but I've only used Notepad to do my adding up so if there are any errors please go ahead and point them out and I'll fix them.

Key changes - Button extends his points lead, and Vettel jumps past Barrichello.

Time for an update, since some people have raised the topic recently about the points system, due to some more bitching from Mr E.

1, Button 82
2, Webber 58,5
3, Vettel 54
4, Barrichello 48
5, Rosberg 25,5
6, Trulli 24,5
7, Massa 23
8, Hamilton 21
9, Räikkönen 20
10, Glock 17

Apart from that, nothing would have changed, but for an extra half point for Heidfeld.

With the MotoGP scoring system, it would have looked like this:

1, Button 183,5
2, Webber 142
3, Vettel 122,5
4, Barrichello 121,5
5, Rosberg 88
6, Glock 83
7, Trulli 71,5
8, Räikkönen 69
9, Massa 67,5
10, Hamilton 66,5
11, Alonso 65,5
12, Heidfeld 51
13, Kovalainen 36
14, Fisichella 28
15, Bourdais 27
16, Nakajima 27
17, Piquet Jr. 22,5
18, Kubica 22
19, Buemi 18
20, Sutil 10
21, Alguersuari 1

The main surprises with this system would have been the sixth place for Glock, as well as a whopping 18:th place for Kubica. Also a surprise how much more consistent Bourdais was in the races compared to Buemi.
