Button must have been holding himself early on, the gap he put to Rosberg after the first pit stops was ridiculous. He went from 3rd to 1st and come out far ahead.

---

I hope Bernie loses a lot of money over the red flag and early end of the race. What a joke.

They changed it to the positions one lap before the red flag came out. Heidfeld the big winner here.

It's based on the race positions on the penultimate lap... same rule that gave Fisi that win in Brazil over Kimi

When was the last season with drivers' standings table having non-integer points? 1984? EDIT: 1991?

When the safety car was released Webber was in 4th and Hamilton in 5th. I suspect this should be the final positions since there was no overtaking allowed behind safety car. Pretty sure the official result will get changed again.

So they kept the earlier advertised race positions just incase the race restarted?

What change the results for a 3rd time?

Doubt it unless there are going to protests

I'm sure I saw heidfeld fall off and fall right down the order.

When the safety car was released is irrelevant. The result is the end of the lap proceeding the red flag being shown.

What did you guys expect them to do?

The rain was so heavy they had to redflag it.

The time limit was almost up.

They were a few minutes from sunset.

You could say that Bernie shouldn't have pushed the time of the race to appease European audiences, and this wouldn't have happened. But how race control ended the race, they had no choice.

What a crazy, crazy race! Well done once again, Button! But I have to say I'm slightly dissapointed as well - for the entire first stint he didn't make much of an impression at all, but once in free air; BAM!

I feel for Räikkönen, think he did really well this weekend, but Ferrari have acted like cocky clumsies throughout.

Rosberg and Williams deserved more than what they got, but it is a lottery when circumstances are like today.

Great performance from Webber and Alonso - good DC-like start!

I don't know for sure. But the rules on which lap will be counted in case a race is red flagged and not restarted are clear.

Half-points:

1975 Spanish GP - Mass
1975 Austrian GP - Brambilla
1984 Monaco GP - Prost
1991 Australian GP - Senna
2009 Malaysian GP - Button

*There were "non-integer" points frequently back in the '50s (shared drives)

The starting time was changed to get more viewers, so the real reason are not to appease European viewers, but Bernie's money bag.

This is no surprise. Many people suspected something like this might happen, and it did. Very harsh on drivers who are only getting 'half-reward' and their efforts being devaluated. Oh well.

utter farce, just ludicrous.....yes i know i said all this in the live chat but i'm still just bemused and baffled at the decision to start this race later to suit the european audience.......pathetic beyond measure and bernie was nowhere to be seen.....hopefully he's writing out his apologies as we speak

It really is a shame when the race finishes under such conditions. I do thnk, though, that the race positions are set to the lap prior to the SC...

Silly end to a good race.

Glad to see Button winning gain though. Just wish it could have been full distance.

Start 11th, get passed by many people, pass no one, and finish 2nd!

When Fisi won in Brazil, it was this very BB were a poster was the first to point out that Fisi should have won instead of Kimi.

So go and check the recordings ;)

The classification is ok. Great race by Button, great strategies by heidfeld and glock. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE decision by Ferrari, again risking the race of the wrong guy, like Spa last year. Unbelievable... Ferrari look amateurish since they lost Todt and Brawn. So so sorry for Kova. Just like last year at the beginning of the season he seems to be pretty fast compared to Hamilton, but he can't get anything out of the races. Luckily for him, this year, Hamilton can't get much either. The race was pretty cool to watch, some great fights, don't let the red flag distract you from that.

Exactly, which was the lap when the sacety car was deployed, which definitely didn't have Webber in 6th and Hamilton in 7th. Weird stuff.

The problem with red flagging because of rain, is that it is hard to decide when to restart. Of course the track is not going to dry in just 20 minutes. You have to restart while the track still is wet. But when you don't have cars out there, it is hard to judge how well the cars can drive.

I remember a race som years ago (probably the Fuji race?), were every driver was complaining that is was impossible to go. But the race started with a few laps of SC, and when the race was started for real no driver has problems. Had the directors listened to the whining drivers, we would have had no race. But by sending them out there, it was obvious that is was possible.

Once the insanely heavy rain stops, restart the race! If it still is too difficult, send out the SC again. But at least give it a go, no driver knows how hard it is to drive just by standing still on the frontstraight.

Bernie needs to be insitutionalized, now!!

A crazy race - or part of. Almost no-one can be promoted or put down since it was such a lottery. Ferrari were worse than anyone else - their strategy was nothing short of horrendous. And to top that with crappy reliability...

Brilliant start to the race with Kimi and Alonso mixing it up with the big boys.

Ferrari strategist needs to be replaced after...three(?) terrible mistakes today.

The Red Bulls are super fast in the wet, could have won if the full race was done.
