and you had one chance of driving any race car in any race what and where would it be?
Mine would be driving a Porsche 917 at the Kyalami 9 hour in the early 70's...magnificant car on a classic track..

If you could turn forward time...... Mine would be the winning car in the next F1 GP, whatever it was; it wouldn't be the drive itself that would appeal to me, but the drive in the hire car into town to bank the cheque.............;)

Haven't we played this game before? Hmm, maybe on another forum.

Ok, here goes: I am a very competent driver and have raced go-karts. So I would never in a thousand year have any chance of mastering a monster 917 or even a current or seventies F1 car. So I'll go for a shark nose around Spa. I think I could handle that AND enjoy myself without the risk of either soiling my pants or kill myself.

Interestingly, I asked Chris Rea at Donington on Sunday what it was like to drive his recreation of the sharknose, and he rather dissapointingly said "a bit like a Formula Junior".
I also asked Chris (a man who is able to make his dreams a reality) what his favourite drive was, and it was "David Piper's 330P around Spa; Awesome!"................... :smoking:

I think that I would have more fun absolutely wringing the neck of a car rather than feeling being a passenger on a nuclear bomb.

Always had a yen to do the Mille Miglia, but was only 7 when the last one ran. Car? How about a Lotus XI to dust up those Etcetterinis? Until it broke!

I feel compelled to state that I changed my sig before I saw jcbc's pic - what a coincidence!

As for the "dream ride", I'd go for a Miller 122 in the Indy 500. Not the most exciting of tracks to drive on, but boy, what an event!

I'd go for a 908 Spyder as well, but in the Targa Florio, trying hard not to think too much about the flimsiness of the 'crash protection' structure. On second thoughts, maybe I'd go for a CanAm McLaren M8B, just to be part of the atmosphere and camaraderie of that wonderful series.

A Ferrari P4 round the banking at the 1967 Monza 1000 km. Thanks to the 1967 sports car mod and the version of the full 10 km Monza circuit, I can already experience this fantasy in GPL, at least virtually.

Mine would be attempting to do a qualifying lap in a Lotus 98T or Williams FW11 at the Osterreichring, on full boost. saying that though, I don't think i would make it past the end of the pit wall before falling off the road so maybe 'just' something like a Lotus 72! Maybe i could do half a lap before incurring the wrath of Chapman... :)

Come on, don't be so sensible. If we're all heading for Fantasy Land, at least let's do it properly!

I wrote " and enjoying"
I view the game from the standpoint of who and what I am (and was) and I can't imagine enjoying a Porsche 917 or a current F1 car.

I am more than a little bemused by the fact that some people appear to believe that a fifties, pre-war or even a vintage racing car would be easier to control than a more modern one!

That's not quite what we are saying though. A Brute is a Brute, no matter when conceived. Which is why I went for 1.5 ltr. engined benign(ish) mannered car.

If it's permissible to choose a rally, rather than a race, I'd have loved to do the Monte Carlo rally in a Mk.1 Lotus Cortina.

...and it was april 7th, 1968, I would have walked up to Jim Clark at Hockenheim and said to him: 'I just had a telegram from the tire company. They say the tyres are faulty, and you shouldn't drive. Here's the telegram.'

After the race, they would have found out I was lying, and that the telegram was forged. By that time I would have been zapped to my own time, and Jim would still be alive.

Oh, sorry. That was not the intention, I understand.

Well I don't want to jump on the Ferrari 312PB bandwagon................. So how about a Matra 670 from the same era (1973?)
I wonder if it sounds so cool, from inside the cockpit

Keeping with the Matra trend.

LeMans 1971, Matra 660. Beltoise gets ill and I get to co drive with Amon.

BTW, I'll ask Chris about the sound difference.

In the Matra trend: Le Mans 1968. Pescarolo hands over to you the 630 he managed through the night, in the rain, with no windshield wiper, to the 2nd place. Johnny Servoz-Gavin gave up, so you have to take over...

This is a cool thread

One question - do we have to pick a car that actually raced on the circuit we pick?

Or even be from the same era?

Which is two questions...

In other words, could I pick, for example, an Auto Union at Indianapolis in 1939...or a Brawn at Avus in 2009??

If you read the very first post the answer woudl be Yes to both your questions.

However reading through most people have stuck to the historically correct car/race/circuit theme!

What I really meant was "any race" meaning Monza 1982, Le Mans 1968, Kyalami 9hr 1970..etc but we won't be too fussy :)

Tin top would be a black JPS BMW M3 in the wet at Bathurst in 1987..

Open wheeler... hmmmm, so many. F190 Ferrari at Adelaide in 1990, Lotus 72 at Zandvoort, Lotus 49 at Longford, BRM V12 anywhere, Matra powered V12 anywhere..

Ferrari F190 ( again ) at Baskerville...

Mini at Baskerville, wait, Ive done that one!

Of course to stand any chance whatsoever I'd drive a Lotus 79, in the 1973 British Grand Prix, not in the spirit of the question, but I really might have a chance (especially as I'd steer clear of "Fletcher" in the first lap!)

I think I'll take the Ferrari 312B at the British Grand Prix at Brands in 1970 (with a slightly wider moulded seat).
I'd have the differential checked carefully in practice for any potential problems, qualify on the outside of the front row, dive inside Jack at Druids, pull away for lap after lap and enjoy the Kent scenery. When coming up to lap Denny, I would tow Clay through to fourth and, having lapped Jochen and Jack with twenty laps remaining, would back off allowing them to save a bit of fuel in my slipstream. After the race I would note that Jack was lucky that his fuel lasted until Paddock on the slowing down lap and would hear Colin saying 'don't bother' as one of the Lotus mechanics began to lean heavily on the Lotus 72 rear wing.

Amon responds to the Matra sound question.

The car was loud everywhere, but in the cockpit, one had the added sounds of engine mechanicals and gearbox. Chris was glad he used good earplugs early in his career and still has good hearing to this day, unlike some of his cohorts.

The front end was pink whilst the rear half was two-tone blue (dark over light) plus the rear wing was white.

Dear John Winfield

"I think I'll take the Ferrari 312B at the British Grand Prix at Brands in 1970"

Couldn't agree more. This was the first GP I ever attended and it made me an Ickx fan for life. Something to do with the noise, the colour and gold wheels of that car.

Shame the race lasted more than 6 laps! I'm sure he would have lapped everyone. The king of Brands Hatch, if ever there was one!
