Good choice or bad one? Repeat of McLaren 2007 or clean fight between two friends? Post your comments please.

I'd like Kubica & Vettel signed to long term contracts.

That would be a sweet driver pairing, but Kimi and Massa are fine

I was a bit confused that the Italian fans would want such an impossible combination but further reading of the story I noticed that the two drivers only lead the preferences. The title of both the story and the poll is misleading...;)

Well that would me more like switching apples to oranges, a matter of taste, but does not change anything...

Agree!

Being an Alonso fan I have to admit I want to see Alonso in a more competitive car then last years and this years Renault (e.g. SF), but I still fail to see why KR and FM get bashed constantly!

As far as Italian sports fans are concerned, Ferrari made the right choice in signing Fernando Alonso for the future.

they seem pretty sure!

Of the five drivers cited, Lewis Hamilton netted the lowest percentage of the vote, with 8.2 percent......and Kimi Raikkonen (8.9%).

great to see their *No. 1 driver so popular

No surprise there, he's the reason for Michael's early retirement and Michael was loved. His "performance" last year didn't help much to improve his popularity.

Great drivers both, clearly. But both in the same team? That might be problematic I would fear. It might be easier to manage one 'superstar' and one safe 'journeyman'. Think Schu and Irvine, or Hakk and DC.

Kubica is sort of a natural pick for Ferrari - he is already closely connected with Italy and F1 fans like him there - he was cheered about 3 times louder than 2nd place man Kova at Monza last year.

Alonso is a fantastic driver and a proven champion.

But I don't think combination of these two would be good for any team.

Both great drivers but I suspect that while they are great friends off the track they would quickly become enemies on it.

Instead of voting for driver pairing, Italians should vote for new team management for Ferrari...

If Ferrari were to hire Alonso they would need a clear number two. The guy just can't handle been beaten by a team-mate.

If - and it is a huge if - Ferrari had those two as a pairing - it wouldn't work. Kubica would not let himself be # 2 and Alonso wouldn't have a teammate able to get equal attention

They are the scapegoats for for what are currently much bigger problems at Ferrari.

their drivers are the last problem they have now...;)
try and stop f#$# strategies, make the car more reliable, increase a little bit the performance (but in this order!) then think if you can have better drivers

Vettel is the next big thing. Kubica is good alright but I don't think he's any better than Raikkonen. Alonso is nº 1 driver, and Hamilton goes the same way.

Yup. Vettel I think, will pretty much be able to choose where he drives by the end of the season.

Not if he continue to drive the way his drives atm. Crashing in the closing stages and spinning out in the race where even Piquet stayed on the track. Allthou, I think he is very fast but no points is no points.

Since when is aquaplaning on inters and the anti-stall not kicking in a driver mistake?

They only had 5 option - Alonso, Kubica, Raikkonen, Massa and Hamilton.

Funny thing none of them are in the top 5 when it comes to current WDC places.

Kubica & Alonso at Ferrari, Hamilton & Vettel at McLaren - not gonna happen but I wish it would (and yeah, Vettel still needs to learn a lot to get to the level of the rest of those guys, but he's a good lad)

Australia was an example of just the kind of driver Vettel is. I remember a situation in the not too distant past when DLR was fighting with Schumacher towards the end of a race. All Schumacher needed to do was let the fella past. He was slower than DLR, he had badly worn tyres, it was the only option, let DLR past and collect the crucial points to win the WDC. What did Schumacher do? He acted like a racer. Vettel is cut from the same cloth. He should have let Kubica through, it was stupid (to us) that he did what he did. However he would not be the incredible talent he is if he acted like we thought he should. He fought. He took that split decision that we would probably not have made.

He's a racer and with that kind of attitude come mistakes. I saw Schumacher fall off the track on so many occasions, make so many silly mistakes and always look on the edge. Hamilton is very much like that and so is Vettel.

As for his performance in the wet, one race in the wet says nothing. It's a lottery and he's won it before and been lauded. This time he lost. |Vettels not the best driver in the world because of last year's wet performances but neither is he suddently the worst because of last weekend.

He's a fine driver and everyone knows it. He's young, he makes mistakes but if it were me, if I ran McLaren, Ferrari, Renault, BMW, Toyota, Brawn right now, I'd put him in straight away if I had the chance.

I don't believe a single team boss, if they had the chance, would turn down Vettel. Anyone that says they would would have to make a VERY fine argument.

I agree he's not the best neither the worst in the world because a great/poor performance

do we really need him though? what would have the team done better with him? one finish out of four possible...neither driver related.
he isn't god as much as these guys driving now aren't rookies. we have absolutely no indication he would perform even at the same level as them (not to mention better), yet we look at changing drivers?
how about making sure the cars get all 4 tyres (if possible at the same pistop with fuel), how about making sure the car's differential is not made of chewing gum etc....these are real problems

Hamilton and Vettel for Ferrari please

Hamilton is by far the best driver in F1 and it would really stick 2 fingers up to McLaren by stealing their golden boy from their grasp and also Vettel is an exceptional talent too

I think a driver like Vettel would provide a lot more than just driving ability. I think today's formula 1 driver needs to be more than just a driver, more than someone that turns a steering wheel. I even think it's more than testing ability. Some drivers have an inherent motivating fator about them. They get the best out of other people, the personnel around them. Without the driving skill that alone is useless but Vettel has that ability and he also has, for want of a better term, the X Factor. Much like Alonso has and Schumacher had.

I look at Massa and Kimi. I like them both as drivers and probably, if I knew them, as people. But I don't feel confident that either has that X Factor. That either has the ability to motivate, to bring a team with them, they don't have those leadership qualities needed for the bad times. Sure, if the car is super fast then I'm sure Kimi is a great asset but what if the car is slow. Remember 2005? What a dog of a car yet look at how Ferrari performed.

Kimi has the look of someone that doesn't care. Massa almost cares too much but doesn't have that leadership and motivating quality. I saw a picture of Rob Smedley and Massa and I've never seen Rob Smedley look so down in the dumps. It's like they ran out of ideas.

A driver like Vettel would bring what has been missing from Ferrari back to Ferrari. I truly think he would galvanize the team. Heck, if Schumacher came back (even though he'd probably get his butt kicked) he would do the same. Everyone would give 100% because of the driver and that must win personality. Can you honestly say that Kimi has that?

So yes, I agree with you, it's important to make sure the team stops making stupid mistakes but the team isn't suddenly useless, it's about personalities and belief. I don't think the team has the belief in the two drivers anymore.

I think drivers like Vettel get the most out of people. Drivers like Kimi, probably fun to have a drink with but not someone that drags a performance out of the team.

So 42% want Alonso at Ferrari.

It means that 58% don't want him there, which is more than those who do.

It doesn't matter anyway because the poll is a nonsense. The results will be different on a weekly basis so there's no point in trying to glean any kind of statistical meaning from it.

In any case, Alonso won't accept a driver that has the ability to beat him in the same team and thus, if Ferrari continues it's equal driver policy Alonso won't want to move there anyway.

It doesn't means 42% of Tifosi wants Alonso there.
It might be Spanish fans that voted there, wishing Alonso to go to Ferrari.

Of course most of 42% are Italians [Gazetta readers] and this is a good sign for Alonso. Despite all the attrition Alonso had with Ferrari before, they rate him high.

I love it how every time something emerges that puts Alonso in a remotely favourable light, all kinds of reasons are given how it's irrelevant, faked, invaded by huge numbers of spanish people and what not.

:p
