Renault Roadshow ends up in a crash

Multiple Middle Eastern Rally Champion Mohammed Ben Sulayem brought his involvement in Renault's Formula 1 roadshow in Dubai to an early end on Thursday, when he smashed up an R28 in a sizeable accident.

Bin Sulayem was taking part in a drag race with a Ford GT driven by Renault test driver Romain Grosjean at the Dubai Autodrome when he lost control of the car.

Having had huge wheelspin off the line, the Renault suddenly snapped right into the pitwall, nearly collecting the Ford GT, before skidding to a halt down the track. The car suffered heavy front end damage, as well as the left rear wheel getting ripped from the car.

Ben Sulayem remained in the cockpit for several minutes after the accident, as marshals attended to him, before getting helped out.

Renault has been conducting a week of activities in Dubai and it is not clear if the accident suffered today will force it to bring the Roadshow to an early close. The team does have two cars present in Dubai, but one of them has already been out of action with an hydraulic problem.

that was a very odd accident, he had got through the difficult launch, wonder if it was a diff problem.

From the Autosport picture he knocked at least one wheel off and left the a large pile of Renault bits on the side of the track.

Probably one of those rich princes with more money than talent who bought the drive :drunk:

Those show off events should be left to actual F1 drivers who know the cars

How many cars do F1 teams make in a year? Or do they just keep the same one for each driver and replace most of the parts?

whey alonso used 1 chassis in 2006

reading one of steve matchett's books, they used several chassis in 1994, always returning to the dreaded chassis no. 3 (or something) so it depends. If they make an update on the chassis, they'll change the chassis, if a driver bins a car, they could change the chassis.

The chassis is really just the tub that surrounds the driver. The engine and everything else is effectively bolt on.

He's a pretty accomplished rally driver.

Given that McRae, Loeb and Solberg have shown it is possible for a rally driver to do an decent job in an F1 car, so this chap could do the same job no doubt.

PS: I saw those video's on a different website too, really love the "I knew it" and "Hoo Lee ****"

PPS: not much crowd for a roadshow

Also happened to Jan Lammers sometime, but he managed to put the steering wheel back in time (maybe harder now the steering wheels are more oval than round shaped (cannot miss contactpoint with the first one)

Eh, looks like over-excitement. Anybody doing 3 starts in rfactor knows that such "throttle-application" ends up in tears.

He was already way passed the start and up to second or third gear I believe.

Maybe he touched the disconnectors instead of the gearlifter, that's why i referred to KR in 2001 who did the same

So in 2nd and 3rd gear while at 18-19rpm doesn`t give you wheelspin?

HILARIOUS. It was also funny to see that it's not just the races, no one bothers to show up in the Middle East for "showpiece" F1 events!

Nelsinho is next on deck for Renault's promotional efforts. UAE's "Gulf News" has details of the event @Dubai Mall. I'd guess he will be using a replacement R28? Definitely going to be some pissed off mechanics either way. According to the article, he is suppose to be "performing tricks, including handbrake turns, wheelspins and power slides." :rotfl:

I had no clue who the former rally driver Mohammed ben Sulayem was - his wiki entry.

Not really surprising, I wonder if guy was a given a chance to try a simulator or even a non-arcade F1 game to get an idea of how easy it is to spin those cars.

If there is something odd about this one, it sounds like TC was off.

The owners of the ships that have been captured have one thing in mind - the safety of the cargo.

They're quite happy to have the ships sit in waters off Somalia while the situation is resolved through pay offs which can then be claimed on insurance.

What they don't want to happen is for the cargo to be destroyed or crews killed.

This is especially true of that giant oil tanker that was taken at the end of last year.

All the talk of Rambo-style (or perhaps Steven Segal?) military operations to liberate vessels are 100% not what the shipping companies involved want.

And Barack Obama is unlikely to order a military operation in the Gulf of Aden. This will all be resolved with money.
