Stumbled upon this image earlier when just messing around.

Seemingly it was a car Lola intended on entering for 1995 but couldn't due to specification changes by the FIA for the 1995 season.

Anyways, the most striking thing about this car is obvious, it has no airbox and just a roll over hoop ? Whats the full story here ? Were Lola testing with a turbo engine or were the air intakes located somewhere else on the car. Or is it simply that Lola were testing without a whole air intake system (which would be very odd)

I remember there was a lot of speculations that when Renault were going for a very wide angle V, that they were going to place two air intakes on each sidepod above the radiation intakes.

It was based on a Indycar wasn't it? That would explain why ;)

it was designed at about the same time as the FIA decided they were going to ban air boxes. remember the holes in them, i think Lola decided to delete it entirely just like the Forti from memory

But they werent banning airboxes they just cut a slit in the back.

but the plan was to ban them, a few cars came out without any air box... but then it was decided to keep the advertising space. the slits didn't work so they allowed them back in

My guess would be that they were just testing something where they didnt need/couldn't be bothered with the airbox/engine cover as their isnt any kind of cover there. It's not like there is an engine cover there that isn't an airbox.

Yep, I agree with Gilles. Looks more like they just left the airbox cover off for that run. It's hardly a finished product of a vehicle.

Are you not mixing it up with the T850 F3000 car of 1985? That was based on a T800 tub and was a little overtanked to say the least for the job in hand.

no really the word was that air boxes would be banned in 95 after the slits were introduced for 94 after senna's crash, have a look at this pic of the forti, they built their car without one assuming the new rules banning them would come in... they didn't
