The thread about Sprint cars made me think of that, and being May: he was co-rookie of the year at the Speedway with Rick Mears.I understand that Larry Rice has lost his battle with cancer. God Speed Larry.

That is sad, he cannot have been very old. He was a regular visitor for a few years here in Australia and always seemed a very nice guy.The thread about Sprint cars made me think of that, and being May: he was co-rookie of the year at the Speedway with Rick Mears.

1978 Co-Rookie of the Year (with Rick Mears, no less) Larry Rice looses his battle with cancer. Friend Robin Miller says his goodbyes. From Speedtv.com:

He raced Midgets and Sprint Cars a number of times at my home track Ruapuna Speedway [Christchuch New Zealand]
One night when I was not racing my self I crewed for him

For the Indycentrics, he wasn't much more than a flash in the pan, but he had a long and very successful career in Champ and Sprint Cars. He twice won the Silver Crown, and I believe he was the first man ever to have started in 100 Champ Car races, after which he retired. I don't know if this feat was ever repeated, perhaps it's still unique.

And besides all that, he was just a nice guy, always acted surprised that someone would want to talk to him. Very humble. Those 2 things don't amount to much anymore, but always cut alot of ice with me.RIP, Larry!

Was Larry related to Buddy Rice, the Indy 500-winner?

Not to my knowledge - but I'm no genealogist.
