Just discoverd this on youtube I had never seen Jon crash at Imola in 1979 and me being his mechanic at the time it really caught me with a shock as it happened so quickly..




Jon broke his collar bone in the crash yet he is determined to ride on amazing what the adrenilin will do.
Our season went downhill from this point as disaster after disaster struck with more broken bones and engine failures which caused more broken bones.
It really is only as you look back that you can see what one mistake can can do to all your plans and asperations.
Jon was leading the world championship at the start of this race with a 5th at Venezuela, 2nd at Austria and 1st at Hockenheim and everything was going well Jon was fit and the bikes were flying, but it was not to be Jon's year but he did it the following year and he will go down in history for his acheivement.

Regarding Eckerold, what a coincidence. I was wondering what to buy myself for Christmas and I had just decided to treat myself to his autobiography, which by all accounts is a decent read. Only problem is, I wouldn`t know how to get hold of a copy. Can anyone help?

Glad to say I was there, watching from the inside of the Esses, accross from the paddock! The buzz was amazing, nearly all the riders competing that day (and not in that race) came over to watch, such was the excitement. I exchanged emails with John Cowie a few years ogo (found him on Friends Reunited) and he said that race was the highlight of his career! He had the best seat in the house of course - and gave spadefuls of praise for Mike .

Just finished reading the Jon Ekerold book again (3rd time).

His opinions of Cur Jackie Stewfart and Barry Sheene (as self appointed riders representative) as well as the FIM (spineless bastards) are warranted and I consider accurate.

Very well worth the read.

Probably Stewarts implimentation of "the safety" Armco barrier instalation @ most/all circuits which worked for car racers, but ended up as lethal bacon slicers for Motorcycle racers.

Sheeney certainly wasn't everyone's cup of tea and I found him to be a definite enigma. No doubt he did a lot to assist the general public's perception of bike racing, but I saw him pull out on the fourth lap of a six-lap AHRMA classic race at Eastern Creek because he had a plane to catch : he was running fifth at the time. (And the airport is the best part of an hour from the track...). Would he have pulled out had he been leading ? The next year we shared a garage at Eastern Creek with him, Freddie and Sidonie were there too. He did all the work on the Walmsley Manx himself, including the tyre changes, and was actually pretty good company all weekend. No question he really enjoyed the classic racing, and was a genuine star at it, holding the lap record at Phillip Island for a few years until Wayne Gardner knocked it off.

As for Jackie Stewart, my mum always said if you can't say something nice about someone...

GD, forgive me, but if I got it correctly after his move to Oz, Fredie was his lad, but who was Sidonie? I thought Barry was married to Stefanie, the girl who left her husband for him after a photo shoot or something? Or was she a daughter I haven't heard about? Or Stefanie's daughter from her first marriage perhaps? Please enlighten me.

Ah its appeared on youtube now, good init!, I was given these races by a guy on fb who got the raw unedited recordings direct from the TV company about 3 years a go excelent almost HD quality, I never ever thought I would get to see these races as no video recorder back then.
