I recently came across one of these in a little museum at Alston in the Pennines. The info board said it was off a type used by Stirling Moss at the start of his career but this is way wrong by about 20 years. The only info I can find was it was at the 1967 Racing Car Show. I remember a couple being demonstated at the Rowrah kart track around that time but I don't think that the formula got off the ground. I think they had lawnmower engines and were claimed to do 60 mph.

Does anyone know anything about the car and the designer? How many were built and did any races take place?

Why Formula 6, we had formula 1,2,3, and 4 so why not 5, or did Formula V take that slot?

Well F6 these days is a mainly 4 stroke based karting series, generally run around the south and south-east. Google them as they may have some history relating back to this period on there.

I can remember when I was Karting, in about 1971/2, that F6 had a couple of races at Blackbushe. We were a bit sniffy about them, but they were surprisingly quick. A certain Ian Flux was the runaway winner.

My dad used to sell sheet metal machine tools to the guy who made the Barnard cars. I'll ask if he can remember his name.

Barnard Formula 6 racers were initially designed for kids from 10 to 17 years of age and were raced with the Rochester Motor Club in the '70's. There were single seaters and "D-type" sports cars, all powered by Briggs and Stratton 210cc 5hp engines. My brother, Tony, and I had one each and started our racing exploits in them along with a certain Ian Flux!

Have many pictures of us racing them from 1973-1974 before we built our own ally-bodied, kart-chassised versions. In another thread on this wonderful but very time-consuming site I explained how I found and bought a Barnard locally and it turned out to be our first one!

Yes, indeed
It would be good to find out more about these cars and how many more exist. Indeed how many were built?

My scanner is currently "kaput" but getting a new one. Once the F5000 is built and hopefully raced at Brands next week will sort some out!

Just found this old post. Tim, did you race at Detling? I too raced against Ian and bought his car when he moved to formula Vee. We sold it back to John Flux when I gave up racing it and Ian went to F3.
I bought a very original car off ebay about 4 years ago so still have one, along with a JoMoRo.

Yes, Tony and I raced there from 1973 to 1976. I won the championship in '75 and my brother in 1976 and '77. We now have our original Barnard back in it's original colours and I nearly bought another one on e-bay recently but with a house move and the loss of our workshop the garages at our houses are somewhat chock-a-block so perhaps good that I didn't!! On the desk in front of me is the album of our F6 racing and all the results sheets, etc. Think I need to spend a couple of hours scanning!!

Sorry, but who exactly are you?

A nice photo of Thomas Barnard (the son of the creator?) from 1968:

I had a day driving one of these circa 1970, possibly at Cannock Chase. Brilliant fun; it belonged to a kid who lived down the road from me as a thirteen year-old (or thereabouts)!

John Stuart Smith. I raced with Tony Ockelford from 1971 until 1974. I was runner up to Tony who was in the ex John Righton lightweight with Torque converter in the '74 season.
I then organised a number of meetings including thise at Buckmore Park and at the SavaCentre.
What is your last mane Tim?

Hi John

My name is Tim Barry.
Have been a bit overworked with moving my mum to a new house and clearing 50+ years of accumulated car and bike stuff from the workshop at the house so have not had time to do any scanning. But I will get there soon!
