Would like to see some opinions on this

I'd probably say Christian Albers after the incident where he ignored the lollipop in the pits and drove off.

I still think there is nobody else in motorsport who is as thick as James Toseland. Watch him on Question of Sport and you'll see why.

Not particularly fair to label an F1 driver as the "dumbest."

Perhaps the better question would be "Worst episode of brain fade."

Fernando Alonso's ignoring of the yellow flags at the Brazilian GP ranks right up there for stupidity as well.

Actually most drivers are pretty thick. Talented, but not too bright.

The OP is asking for this biggest example of brain fade and it would have been better to label the thread as such. Were it really a thread about the driver with the lowest intellect it wouldn't have been either particularly interesting. I doubt most drivers are thick, though not many have excelled academically.

DC had his moments. But it is not fair to say he was or is dumb. I cannot think of one driver in past few years who would qualify as dumb.

That rings a bell. And Rosberg was set for a top Uni (LSE?) before committing to driving. Many drivers come across as intelligent: Hill, Lauda, Prost, Senna, Coulthard, Stewart, ...

EDIT: FI-Addict great clip :rotfl:

Nigel Mansell, for turning off his car when waving to the crowd before passing the finish line.

seriously, how can anything top this..

"Mansell led going into the final lap, but did not complete it. While waving to the crowd at the hairpin near the finish he allowed his revs to drop and the Renault V10 cut out. Piquet, running second for Benetton, could scarcely believe his luck. It was a sweet victory for the Brazilian, who had a turbulent relationship with Mansell when they were team-mates at Williams..

The one where his stupidity/arrogance/whatever caused him an injury and brought out the red flag? Agreed it's up there if not the summit of just poor form.

Alonso at Interlagos 2003 wasn't a typical brain fade, IIRC, he was racing to complete the lap and see if he could gain time and/or pass anyone. It was more like a ridiculous gamble with terrible outcome.

I'm still puzzled by Schumacher racing with inters when it was dry at Hungaroring in 2006. Any conventional strategy with a pit stop for dry tyres would have kept him in the points with the podium at sight. He threw it away and came home with only a point after Kubica was disqualified. And it's not like it was 50/50, the track was dry, Alonso was out and the points lost were crucial to the championship.

Kimi crashing into Liuzzi that day was a monumental brain fade.

Yeah, but there are some 'mitigating' factors: the SC had just came out, tyres weren't properly heated, track was still damp in some places, etc...
At Hungary it was just "WTF just happened"?

Not sure that's a matter of stupidity - flies into a chicane and suddenly there's a car wreck on the track and a medical car to its left that has just opened its door...

Well, The authority on this subject is here...
http://www.f1rejects...hall/index.html
I LMAO with some of these.
Hotly contested for the crown are DC in '95, Hill in '95 and '96 and Mika in '99.

edit: You need to dig a little to find gems like the one for Kling and Kleng in '52

Besides the Kling/Klenk car, Le Mans winner Hermann Lang drove one of the other two cars, and American John Fitch drove the third. Despite attracting big crowds, the Mexican roads weren't always the best to drive on, as shown when Kling and Klenk rounded a corner at over 100mph only to find a buzzard in the middle of the road. The big bird didn't get out of the way in time, and having been hit went straight through the windscreen, smashing into Klenk and inflicting minor injuries to his head. Kling bravely held on until the next refuelling stop, where the windscreen was repaired and the interior cleaned up, but apparently the stench lasted for some time! Just to show Mercedes' professionalism, though, overnight their crew proceeded to fit vertical steel bars across the windscreen to prevent a repeat from happening! What's more, Kling and Klenk went on to win the event.

On the subject of knowledge I remember being embarrassed for Murray Walker as he did pathetically on Mastermind one year. I know when you are immersed in the sport you perhaps don't take as much knowledge as some of us "geeks" have, but watching him stumble over his specialist subject, F1, was quite embarrassing.

Schumi arrived at that chicane at a MUCH lower speed.

Maybe the instructions got through to him more clearly than they did to Nick.

Mansell was waving to the crowd, the engine revs dropped dramatically, when Nigel went to select a lower gear, the semi-automatic gear box balked and found neutral and since the revs were so desperately low the engine stalled. Driver error because he was faffing about waving to the crowd before he'd actually won the race.

Had everything handed to him to have a great career in F1 and miserably failed.

I know the question was not aimed at me , but let me say that I know several racing drivers who are very intelligent, bright, some of them even with university degrees.
Of course they are in low categories and they are not known around the world - I don't know any F1 drivers personally, but why would F1 drivers be any dumber? Maybe these drivers I know would have achieved more if they had been born in another country with more money. But even so, they would still be intelligent...

They usually don't have degrees, they didn't go to higher education - for pretty logical reasons - but that does not mean that they are dumb. If a brilliantly intelligent youngster decides to finish their studies at 16, they won't be less intelligent afterwards...

Maybe the racing drivers that you know are not too bright, OK, that's your own experience, but you can't say that in general.

Most F1 drivers don't have awesome qualifications because their priorities were not academic. But yes, I do know racing drivers, and they're all bright and intelligent people.
