There's been a big step forward in getting Pete to the grid:

http://www.techcrunc...-1-racing-team/

Interesting that it comes across as private investment rather than outright Google/You Tube. But we all know there will be a Google/You Tube logo on this car. And to think all this during a recession. Yes it's sort of old news but it's interesting that it's being discussed openly now.

Kind of weird really, because Google and YouTube don't really need to advertise.

They're already completely dominant.

The only problem being.....that YOUTUBE is alledgedly at the point of collapse! The bandwidth usage of peoples videos is so grossly in excess of any income generated to pay for the ever increasing bandwidth that the majority of tech market watchers here in California, believe it is only a matter of time before Google introduces some radical changes to the cash blackhole that is YouTube.

There has been a huge uproar from users with regards "copyright" claims, whereby many video's have their sound removed as they might have a music track within the soundtrack , which according to the message the video infringes the rights of WMG copyright (Warner Music Group). However many get this message even for music that is or has never been part of WMG.

This is happening more and more and while you can contest it, most people do not bother and simply remove the video. Some are commenting that this in fact has nothing to do with copyright and more to do with YouTube trying to reduce the sheer volume of videos that are being uploaded.

Either way, it would seem strange to promote the brand further, when they are already struggling with the sheer volume of videos being uploaded. The only possible perk for YouTube would be the ability to take sponsors of the site to races and give them the full F1 treatment...

Google all over the car however, would probably make sense, just as long as we dont have to see any more stupid "Earth" Liveries! :D

However, as with all large company sponsorship, it comes down to whether a key executive likes the sport or not, For example, Larry Ellison is a huge sailing and yachting fan, hence his sponsorships in that discipline.

There is no doubt Google has the cash... Sergey Brin and Larry Page have a net worth of $18.2 Billion according to Forbes in 2007. They could provide a very interesting"medium" to deliver coverage from F1 races to a potentially HUGE audience. Pay per view with the "Team" for the weekend! Could actually be a very easy investment decision for them....

Google have an operating system to launch, with a huge issue of critical mass, maybe that's what they have in mind. They'll want to be getting more coverage than a normal backmarker team though.

These guys all play Warcraft together. On their private jets. The connection between Google and You Tube is apparent.

If I privately invest in a company and I own another company that can advertise with company #1, I will. I find it interesting that ANYONE in America sees F1 as a place to put money.

I heard Larry Page was talking to Brawn at Monaco because he wanted to get the Google name on the side of a race-winning car from the very beginning.

Especially with quotes from Windsor like:

Windsor admitted Danica Patrick was not a possibility for the team, as he reckons the IndyCar star is too big a name for a new squad.

"A lot of people are saying to us, 'Are you interested in Danica? and my reply is in some respects, Danica is too big for us now," he added.

When did they ever say that?

what is interesting is that they are building a car yet seem to have not decided what engine to fit in it....I suppose all the engines are so very close in size and performance as to not matter, but i would think that it would

And danica is STAR POWER

And is already far far bigger, far bigger, than Ham, Kimi, Button and all the rest put together

check it out: http://www.youtube.c...feature=related

The fact that if they impose the old ten percent rule, would mean she might not make the grid at most races, is not relevant.......................

Uh, they nominated a Cosworth, so they have to run with a Cosworth.

But you are right in the respect that engines are not that difficult. I believe the basic dimensions of the engines are very similar; after all, the BGP-001 was designed around a Honda powerplant, but when Tokyo killed the project and Brawn got his hands on the Mercedes engine, they basically had to make a few minor design changes to the engine cowling and bay and they were set to go. It's not like they totally have to re-design the back end of the car.

Windsor about turning down pay-drivers:

"Both of them have massive sponsorship they can bring us from their home country... Ken (Anderson) and I have got to be very strong, look one another in the eye and say, 'no, we're not gong to accept that money, we're not going to hire those guys because we're going to remain true to our convictions"

Where does the air of moral superiority come from? You're not helping orphans from Addis Ababa, you abysmal ****. You're not even choosing drivers based on their driving ability.

Quite. You're picking drivers based on indirect sponsorship. If you need funding, pick the best combination of funding+speed. Once you have budget regardless of nationality, get the best drivers you can. The team/car will win, not the driver. You can still be Team America **** Yeah with Alguersuari in the car.

Seems weird, several of the current drivers are playing to pay (Sutil, Alguersuari).

Always thought either Coke or Pepsi should sign up. Or (given the male demographic of F1 fans) Gillette.

Or maybe because there's a stigma associated with pay-drivers.

Windsor and Anderson clearly want the best drivers they can get. Their refusal to take pay-drivers probably stems from the notion that a more-talented driver may miss out on a race seat if a second-rate pay-driver waves a large cheque under their noses. I'd say USF1 already has a lot of the funding it needs, so they can take the high-and-mighty approach. After all, he does really have a point: the best drivers should be afforded the opportunity to race, not the ones with the better bank balance.

How will Google/Youtube feel about F1 forcing them to remove videos from their own website of their own cars running in a race?

F1 clips don't seem to last 24 hours on Youtube anymore... Would that have to change?

I believe that Bernie and CVS (or what ever they are called) own the rights, that a number of TV companies around the world buy the right to broadcast, and that none of it can be posted on Youtube regardless of Youtube sponsoring or not.

So 'all' Youtube would have to do, was sit down with Bernie and agree on how much they will pay him per minute streamed of F1 on Youtube, 1 user streaming 5 minutes is nothing, let's for sake of argument say Usd 0,10 per minute. Then that clip would cost Youtube Usd 0,50 each time a user streamed it, and that add's up over the number of times a clip is watched, especially when your are some hundres of millions in the hole already.

apparently they are finding enough funding. from formula1.com:

The US-based Formula One team due to join the grid next season say they are determined to stick to their guns and use American drivers, despite being approached by experienced names from other countries with substantial financial backing.

"We've been offered well over three-quarters of our racing budget by two drivers already, neither of whom have raced in Formula One but both have won races in GP2," Team US F1 co-founder Peter Windsor told Sports Illustrated magazine.
