The bloke in the cap is Bryan Thompson and I reckon the lady with the blue bag behind is Tania [Tania34]
Right on both accounts.
And yes it is Stuart Kostera. He spent most of the day at Wayville, and had plenty of stories to share. I think the dinner chat brought back a lot of memories for many people.

They have vaguely Crusader bodywork but don't look like NGs at all.
Any of this familiar to anyone?

A group or performer (never did work it out) called 'America' did that one. It felt good to be out of the rain, but maybe this lot would like someone to remember their name?

They came along much earlier. I think, in fact, they were the earlier style of Elfin Vee. Even the 'New Generation' Vees had been around a good while before Garrie died.

The Elfin book mentions some orders finished by Cliff, maybe those? I thought there were a number of Ng's built by Elliott before the Crusader which first ran in 1987. They had the 'mk2' body with a different nose and a 45deg lip along the bottom of the sides and nose and the chassis numbers started in EP.Dunno if this is the best place to ask, but I've come across recently tales told of some Elfin constructed Formula Vee that aren't allowed to be called Elfins. Story goes there were about three cars built not long after Cooper's death and before Elliott took formal control and these cars because Elliott did not want to recognise them as Elfins now are simply called HFVs. Nameless race cars for when Clint Eastwood needs to trade up his horse with no name.

While I have no idea about these cars the Elfin factory continued working to some degree after Garrie died, though I doubt anywhere near capacity. It picked up again when Tony went in there as manager for Don Elliot. The Elfin book mentions some orders finished by Cliff, maybe those? I suspect that Cliff Cooper always owned the premises until it was sold a few years ago and is now a crash shop.

If they came from the Elfin works they are Elfins and if they are copies they are whatever the builder called them. And there was quite a few copies done over the years. My curiosity was related to why the official view might be that these few Vees cannot be called Elfins for historic certficate purposes? What is the mentality behind that and what other name should then be used if not Elfin?
#113
Posted 14 January 2010 - 10:20
There were three Elfin NG's finished (ie orders already placed) by Garrie's dad Cliff in 1983 they were all Elfins NG8327, 28 & 29. Don Elliot took over in 1984 and there was another batch of Edmondson Porter Elfin NG's these we produced between 84-86 EP01 to EP12 and the first of the Crusaders were made in 1987. All those cars are as Elfin as any other car that was produced by the factory. There are Elfin NG copies but none of them should be called Elfins (ie Spectres).QUestion I've raised in the Elfin 50 year thread - heard tell of a story recently that there were a small handful of Vees built, or finished by Elfin not long after Garrie Cooper's death, but well before his successors started producing the Crusader, and that those Vees are now not allowed to be called Elfins. Is there anyone who can clarify what seems to be a silly issue for me?
Eventually the jigs and the tooling for the Elfin Crusaders was bought by Michael Borland those cars were known as Borland Sabres.

Ian Lee

Yes, they were a Coach Body Building Works - including Bus bodies before racing and sports cars took hold.As a matter of interest the premises were originally Cooper Body works. what did Cliff build. One off bodies for Sports Cars etc or did they do truck and van bodies? There was some good and large sheetmetal equipment there, realy to big for race car stuff.

That building is across the road from the Elfin factory. In my time it was a wireworks and is now a crash shop, owned by the same bloke that owns the Elfin factory.he also owns the old Motor Traders building on the corner of South Rd
Here's a Bus Body by Messrs Cooper - both Garrie and Cliff are in the shot - I'd be interested to have all the gentlemen in the frame identified. Jack Hilton may be one of them, but I'd be guessing as to most of them!!

Yeah, I remember it with that livery, though original scheme had a lighter blue. Ron was happy to machine another set of wheels for "cousin" Trevor recently!! Though I must admit, we've had to inspect the family tree twice to find him!!! Welcome to the Elfin fold Trevor, I'm available for adoption!!!!

Here's an article that appeared in the Elfin Owners and Drivers Club Newsletter detailing the weekend's events.
Elfin Sports Cars "Works" 50th Anniversary Celebrations
- Adelaide August 15 & 16, 2009 –
Former Elfin employees Ron Lambert and Bob Scott organised a weekend of events in Adelaide to mark the Marque's 50th year since it's inception. The weekend started with Elfins circulating at Mallala
with local drivers being joined by cars from up and down the East coast, I for one was tickled pink to see Steve Webb going round in the ex Michell Repco Brabham powered 360, Bob Cracknell ran his ex Tighe 600B, Brian Lear joined the fray in his Mono (one of Garrie's former cars), Vern & Elaine Hamilton, fresh from running their Queensland shindig were still running as they were amongst the first to appear at Mallala with their 623, Keith Morling was not so lucky as his ex Larner Championship winning 700 succumbed to fuel pump gremlins (though it was seen running strongly at Wakefield Park in September!), Mike Fairweather in running a NG Vee chose to make his "race day debut" – a sage decision indeed, in coming from Victoria to the Elfin home track for such an occasion he did look like the cat with the cream!! (I thought I'd better not use Bill Hemmings other euphemism here!!) Jeff Brown made the journey from Victoria as well, but not before modifying his trailer so that he could squeeze in his ex Tim Schenken F3 Brabham BT28 together with his 622 (one of a number prototype Elfins on show over the weekend). Bill Hemming might not have gotten the prize for travelling the farthest to get there, but he did manage to rock up with a type 500 Vee, a type 400 with recently installed Repco Brabham V8, the ex McGillewie "South African" type 300 – it's original 2 litre Climax motor on song, and as if that wasn't enough, Bill hooked a MR8 on behind the truck – onya Bill!!! John Evans also campaigned his Streamliner (and yes, it is the one that started it all).
A number of interested spectators were seen congregating near the grandstand joining Lorraine, passing an educated eye over proceedings at one stage – I wasn't sure if it was a Woodstock revival (it was the fortieth anniversary of the Woodstock weekend after all!!) or a fine crop of drivers from the sixties - Phil Moore, Henry Michell were there, both Henk Woelders and Stuart Kostera bobbed up from Western Australia. Barry Catford was also on hand providing much assistance helping Ron organise proceedings from afar! As "old" boys from way back Ron & Bob were pretty keen on assembling as many of their "old" cohorts as possible – they dragged former workmates kicking and screaming from all over the place – a few fellows had managed to slip through the net, but Pommy Smallman must have heard the jungle drums and got through to the travelling road show as Ron was headed through Horsham. The Honour Roll of former employees in attendance included – former local boy Bob Mills and family came out from the States, Tony Alcock's widow Cathy McConnell, who's UK based was also in attendance, Dale Koennecke, Brian Farquar, Steve Harkness, Greg Mobbs, Ian Deckert, Carlo Luetto, Jack Hilton and Bruce Went were all in attendance to recognise Fulvio Mattiolo and John Webb in particular for the many years of sterling service in helping craft Garrie's creations. Fulvio having been "chief welder" and John being the man who hand beat the aluminium bodies for the many prototypes to emanate from Conmurra Avenue. John & Fulvio received recreation Elfin Steering Wheels that Bob Scott & son Mark crafted for the occasion. Charlie Tuckey and Alan Broughton couldn't make it and there were a few others we couldn't find……Brandivino wins the prize for being the last "Works Employee" to make him self known over the weekend – he re-introduced himself to Bob Mills at the Pavilion on Sunday around lunch time.
Ben Bidstrup and John McCormack both entertained the packed house at The South Australian Sporting Car Club Rooms - the story telling didn't get out of hand at any stage, though I do seem to recall James Calder who was displaying Garrie's first Mono trying out his comedic talents, Brique was at his rapid fire best with a witty rejoinder though!! Super Mac and Pommy Smallman seemed to be getting on like a house on fire – it seems as though all has been forgiven with respect to that little incident a few years back when Pommy managed to invert the transporter with John's Elfin in it!! Mark Goldsmith controlled proceedings with aplomb throughout the night, he was one of many who was press ganged into running at Mallala, before pitting and then fronting up to dinner at the Car Club in short order. Bob Cracknell, John Evans and James Calder were kind enough to rush their 600, Streamliner and Mono straight from the track to the Stage to from a delicious backdrop for the dinner.
As if the addiction wasn't being fed well enough by this stage of the weekend, Sunday saw even more Elfins on show for both hard core Elfin die hards as well as those less severely addicted "regular motorsport fans" at the Royal Showgrounds. The Jubilee Pavilion at the Showgrounds was lined end to end with Elfins. Many thanks go to John Holmes and his son Adrian for bringing the one and only type 350 down from Toowoomba to join the display. I must admit to having a particular predilection for the "Sports" in Elfin Sports Cars – so you can imagine how chuffed I was to see a 300,350,360,400 and ME5 all lined up in a row!!!!! In fact, the vast majority of Elfin types did end up being on show. Mal Miller was kind enough to bring along a Birrana for comparative purposes as well! Another special thankyou goes to John Anderson who allowed his Cooper Butler to make the trip across to Adelaide from Melbourne, and Andrew Major in Melbourne for similarly loaning his 620FF to enlarge the static display of model types! Andrena Clisby's V6 and Garrie's trophies formed fitting centrepieces to salute the cars that remain as both Garrie & Cliff's legacy. Thankyou again, to everyone who was involved.
John Lemm, as official photogrpapher of the weekend's events has 19 shots on the VHRR website, typing in www.vhrr.com/photos_index.htm into your computer and then going to Elfin Reunion will get you there!!

Spencer, yes those wheels do look similar to an Elfin wheel. Check 6463, which is a colour shot from 1964 (will also come up when you type in Matich).

Yes, the Spanos car probably has to take the cake- uninterrupted since new in 1960 - Lyn first owned his in around '64, let it go after about 5 years and got it back again around 76. Both cars looking absolutely ticketyboo these days.

The guy is the brown corduroys by the Sports Car way back is definitely Stuart Kostera - he drove both Sports Car and an F5000 for Ansett Team Elfin for several years, based in the Elfin factory. The team was disbanded when Garrie died. One of the great perks of the Ansett sponsorship was free first-class air travel to and from meetings, very important if you live in WA and race on the east coast. Stuart says the F5000 was twitchier than the sports, no doubt due to the sports cars better aero.

I can confirm that is correct.Don Hall's great book, "Both Sides of the Fence", is out. He knew Garrie Cooper very well for many years, from when they were both mad keen model aeroplane builders - racing control line aircraft with those tiny 5 cc and 10 cc engines. Garrie's favoutie plane was an "English Elfin" - hence the name of his cars.

I guess Tania would be interested in that one too...
Ok, I have a little news on Peter's Car, I'm told it was bought by Reg Sparks' son, my source is pretty reliable as, its Peters brother Murray, my dad. Dad went to this anniversary and loved it, I remember going to the factory during the build of Uncle Petes car, dad also took a lot of photos for Gary at Elfins over the years so I'm really loving this thread, even if I'm a bit late getting onto it.
Best wishes,
