Chad Hurley, founder of Youtube and now paying to make the USF1 dream a reality, says he is "thrilled to be involved in the America's F1 team in more than 40 years"

Is he referring to AAR and simply ignoring the efforts of Don Nichols (Shadow), Roger Penske, Parnelli (VPJ) and Force/Haas, or did those American team not run with a US license?

Let's hope it was an oversight... I cannot see this team being in the same league as AAR and Penske, hopefully it might last a little longer than the latter two however...

Probably in common with many of his fellow countrymen, not much sense of history, though that's not really meant as a criticism, just a statement of how things are. I bet if you asked him, he'd tell you that computers were invented in the good ole US of A.

Living in the middle of "Silicon Valley", I can confirm that your comments are, sadly, correct. To many, history only refers to the last operating system. To tell how bad it is................I recently was told, by a "techie", that Scotch was originally derived from a stolen Jack Daniel's Whiskey recipe. This individual's employer helped make it possible for Chad Hurley to get involved with USF1.

I like that, so Macallan, Glenlivet, Glenmorangie, Laphroig, Lagavulin, Glen Ellen, Rosebank, Caol Isla and all the others, are just Johnny-come-latelies in the grown up drinks business?

Rubbish. The Scots actually pinched it from the Irish .... (earliest Irish written record, 1405; earliest Scots record 1494) :)

(Although I have heard it claimed that the Chinese actually invented whisky.)

Money, money, money... In today's F1 (and society in general), it's best not to overly-criticize the one who writes the checks...

Just sayin' :)

Force/Haas raced with a US license if I am not mistaken. As an aside if one has the chance of choice to compare one's initiative with Great Dan Gurney, wouldn't you be tempted?

You'll be along time looking for a reference to whisky in Ireland  :rotfl:

I've long pondered if the USA is actually the centre of the universe, it may explain why Aliens only ever abduct American cows....

Sorry for being a spoilsport but we know that americans have let's say, an a bit odd view of the world. So let's go back to the original subject.

Was Shadow an american (license) team or did they run under british flag? They moved to the UK '72/'73.

Does he mean "American" as in "designed, built and run from America" and under a US license? I can't think Peter would let him get away with an historical cock up, and having worked with him, he could be laying a trap!!!

Shadow were constructed in the UK, as was the Penske, I can't remember where the Parnelli was built, nor the Eagles, but I think the Scarabs were US built?

Just a thought!

Sorry, can't drink Scotch!

I cannot imagine the "so called" USF1 team of Peter Windsors being a success!!! Can anyone else?........After all he is a journalist and has never done a lap in anger and has absolutely no idea about being a real competitor. Text books are great but give me the real thing anytime.
Just another profiteer

The Chinese claim to have invented everything on the planet. Except the camera of course, so they don't have any pictures to prove all their claims.

He's done more than just journalism, which is one of his less successful projects. I don't think driving experience is neccessary to running an F1 team, surely history shows it is a detriment?

I do agree that he is a bit of a carpetbagger, within the USF1 context.

And he fits in extremely well with the Brown Nose brigade (Lets climb the corporate ladder).
There are many wealthy people that fall in to this category and the fact is that CHAMPIONS (fortunately) do not. :)

Lets give them the time and space to fail on their own merits, not because we use a groupthink formula concocted on a BB to decide who will win and who won't.

I do not like Formula 1 at all anymore. Lets face it.......Ecclestone, Dennis, Briatore, Todt, Mosley and the likes have turned this sport into a circus.......even Jackie Stewart robbed Ford for millions

Journalist? Wonder why he was in the car with Frank Williams on the day Frank had his accident, coming back from a test, or why he was employed by Williams, as a team manager (much the same as while he was at Ferrari).

Let us not forget all the US teams that used UK manufactured Cosworths, Hewlands, AP components, etcetera (and all the rest of the bits I peddled).

Did Len Terry just design the Eagle F1 tub, or did he build them? Whatever, if the VPJ1 was built in the US it's still under forty years!

According to John Zimmermann's fine book on the history of Eagle, Terry moved to California to design the car and the car itself (sans engine and all the ancillary equipment that EVERYBODY gets from the UK) was built in the AAR shops in Costa Mesa, Cal.

I don't set much score on bits from another country. After all
Ferrari used Vendervell bearings
Vanwall used Bosch fuel injection
Cooper used a Citroen-ERSA gearbox
Lotus used a ZF gearbox
Honda used a Lola-made chassis
McLaren used carbon fibre tubs made by Hercules
Repco used a Buick block
and Hewland used VW gearbox casings
etc

And to get back to the original topic wasn't Gurney's win in the Eagle the only "All American", ie car and driver, GP win?

Silly question, "Where was the Eagle's engine from?" Forgive my ignorance, the Eagle was just before I discovered Formula 1.

All the way from Rye in East Sussex, Weslake Engineering, Harry Weslakes company, although (IIRC) a few races were driven with Coventry Climax engines.

Sorry, edited to add that East Sussex is in the U.K.

I thought so, but at times I defer to those with (hopefully) more knowledge. So we may assume that a race car is like an art collection. One must beg, borrow, steal, copy & purchase from everywhere in order to have something worth presenting to the world?

Spot on, designed by Len Terry (who lived along the coast a bit in Hastings then I believe), such a beautiful car, I was at Brands the day that Dan won the Race of Champions

Yes, if we're talking World Championship GPs. If not, add Murphy in the Duesenberg, 1921 French GP.
