Hi

Let's discuss the biggest pile-ups in motosport history. I remember at the moment some of them:

- Monaco 1950
- Brands 76
- Brands 84
- Detroit 84
- Nurburgring 97
- Montreal 98
- spa 98

Austria 1987.

Not one big pile-up but 2 lesser. It took thre attempts to get them away, and 6 cars started from the pits.

Great to see you've done your homework.........Brands was 1986 and what a pointless thread by the way.

A thread entitled "Pointless threads" could easily be started, but I fear it would be somewhat oversubscribed! It could be like a TNF skip in the yard, and could be emptied every Friday! :rotfl:

There was one in 84 as well. Johansson and Gartner involved inter alia.

FF1600 race at Oulton Park October 1969

Any Formula First race!

Does the definition of a "pile-up" have a minimum number of participants? I would have thought it would have to be a MINIMUM of four.

I don't really think Monaco 1950 comes into the category of 'start pile-up'.

Don't know if you heard DC talk about Spa 98 at the weekend.

At the time he claimed he had been pushed into the spin that caused that mayhem.......last weekend he admitted he just spun all on his own :)

Interestingly, the traditional Chinese character for "rumble" or "catastrophe" is written using the character for chariot three times, one on top of another two.

Technically it occurred at the start.

Long Beach 1976 when Hunt walked down the middle of turn 4 yelling and pointing at Depailler.

Cheever, Gartner, Johanson and Alliot so does give us our four.

The F3 race at Brands 1978 sticks in the memory - most of the field never reached Paddock Hill. Johnny Herberts crash was on a 'first' lap, first lap of a restart come to think of it i can't think of that many races that were red flagged twice.. Macau usually has at least a four car pile up every year. this being a prime example.

In terms of non-F1 examples, there were several first corner pile-ups at Pau in the old F3000 days, and a few at Macau also...

Indy 1958. Not really a "start" pile-up, but I recall that the starting procedures and foul-ups may have played a role(?).

Shouldn't that be Monaco 62 ( when the marshal sadly suffered fatal injuries ) ?

Can I add Canada ( forgotten the year ) when Wurz rolled and Nurburgring 99 when Diniz rolled and his rollbar snapped/twisted

A funny story about Brands 1984... I interview Huub Rothengatter, who was in that race (and qualified and raced pretty well) about that crash because I had pictures of him looking straight at the crash from his cockpit. At least, I thought so from watching the pictures in GPI. But he was adamant there WAS no crash in front of him in 1984. Then I showed him the pictures. 'Bloody hell,' he said, 'you know I did not see that - at all!'

I suppose that the crash involving the Renaults of Warwick and Tambay at Monaco in '84 qualifies as a start crash. It delayed a large part of the field.

Also, the crash at Paul Ricard in '89 when Gugelmin became airborne....

Monaco 1980? when Daly tried to overtake the field airbourne. Monza 1978 and Canada 1982 tragically

Oh and if you really want to see the biggest start pile up ever check this out from the early days of Daytona.

No one is hurt thankfully

Who could forget Derek Daly's auto acrobatics at Monaco in 1980? [Edit: Evidently not LB  ]

I'm not sure if this counts, but the 2002 CART/powerboat race at Surfers Paradise featured a horrendous crash as the field finally took the green after a long stretch of caution laps through a monsoon to start the race. Half the field was involved, Jimmy Vasser and Tora Takagi flipped, Michael Andretti submarined underneath a Player's Forsythe car, and Takagi and Adrian Fernandez suffered injuries.

Wurz in Canada was 1998 btw

Sticking with recent F1

Hockenheim 2001 Schumacher Burti et al
Hockenheim 1994 had two seperate ones by the first corner
and i'm sure there was more there.

Nurburgring is another track with a fair few pile ups at turn 1
Monza too notably 2000

As for Melbourne theres a fair few!!
1996 with Brundle at turn 3
1997 Irvine/Villenueve/Herbert
2002 with Ralf's airbourne williams 8 cars retired
2006 Massa/Rosberg et al
2008 5 retirements in two incidents
2009 another first corner mess but only Kovalainen retired

Estoril 1995 with Katayama collliding with Badoer and flipping all over the shop

We could be here for a while.

1996 with brundle at turn 3

If I recall, Brundle's Jordan had the roll hoop mounted backwards - something to do with "rules interpretation". I remember reading speculation that could have prevented things from being even worse...

Another one which springs to mind is the Patrese/Stohr incident at Zolder in '81, when the Arrows mechanic was injured.

Also, the Lauda/Regga crash at Montjuich Park in '75. Didn't Patrick Depailler get caught up in that one also?

Slightly OT but.....I'm not sure whether the first corner incident at Montjuich in 1975 has really been clarified. I can't remember Depailler being involved but I might be wrong; Lauda, Regazzoni, Andretti and Brambilla tend to be mentioned, although I think only Lauda retired at the spot. In the various clips on YouTube and elsewhere, Andretti clearly hits Lauda who, in turn, collects Regazzoni. I believe Brambilla is blamed for first nudging Andretti under braking for the left hander but, personally, I can't see any evidence of this. In fact, I think, if you look really carefully, Brambilla is nowhere near Andretti, separated from the Parnelli by Hunt's Hesketh. I wonder whether this was another case of English speaking journalists believing the story of English speaking drivers.
