 Hi everyone

I have some questions that I hope your expertise can answer for me regarding the 1961 German GP.

From looking through different sources, I have noted that Geoff Duke was entered for the Grand Prix in a Cooper T45 but failed to arrive. I am aware that he later raced at the non-championship Swedish Grand Prix, which I believe was in the same car.

However, my questions are these:

Is Geoff Duke an official entry of the F1 World Championship?
If so, which team was he entered for?
What was the reason for his non-arrival?

Hope someone can clarify for me, thanks...

All I know is what the stats say - From Statsf1 http://statsf1.com/default.aspx

n - Year - Grand Prix - Team ----------- N° - Constructor - Engine - Tyre - Grid - Race

1 - 1961 - Germany - Fred Tuck Cars - 35 - Cooper T45 - Climax L 4 - Dunlop - f - Car unavailable

F1 archives say the car wasn't ready .

All I can add, courtesy of 'The Formula One record Book' (Thompson / Rabagliati / Sheldon) is that the car was entered by Fred Tuck and the reason listed for it being a non-starter was 'car not ready'. For the Kanonloppet two weeks later, the chassis number is listed as F2-23-58.

Thanks so much everyone.

Does this mean that Duke is an official F1 entry then?

As he is not showing on the official F1 website?? :well:

Thanks

Cyril Posthumus nice period book The German Grand Prix gives both Geoff Duke and John Surtees as a Non Starters in the 1960 German Grand Prix on the Sudschleife, not in 1961!
and the 1960 race was a Formula 2 event.
The car could well have been a Cooper.., Cooper were very popular then..

Thanks everyone for your input. Any further information would be most appreciated. It seems the most logical clarification is to go with what was in the original programme. This is one of many anomalies of entries which require clarification.

I was talking to Andy Sutcliffe recently and he explained to me that he was asked to race the Ligier at the French GP 1977, but due to communication problems it all fell through. It would be interesting to know if Ligier had two cars present, does anyone know? I am aware of the entry of 1974 prior to the DNPQ of the British GP in 1977.

Thanks

If we're talking about 1960, Motor Sport says that Duke was entered by Reg Parnell but decided to race at Aintree instead. He did race at Aintree the following day. The German Grand Prix was, of course, a formula 2 race in 1960.

There was no question of being an official entry in the F1 World Championship in the early 60s. You raced if you had a car and the organisers accepted your entry. If you finished in the first six you got points.

Geoff Duke did race a F1 car at Karlskoga in 20th August 1961. He was slowest in practice after a crash and crasched out of the race after ten laps. Duke was a well known name in Sweden after his motorcycle successes, but his appearence at Karlskoga didn't impress the Swedish motorsport press: " It looks as if Duke uses his good name to collect as much money as possible before he and the car (which wasn't in a good shape) is totally finished." ".. Duke, who although driving at a relatively slow speed, crashed on a straight (!) and was taken to hospital."

Good question... I'm still working on my database - which I think will never be done - and sometimes, you have to go with what you want to go with (if that makes sense) :)

Although I haven't done so (yet), list him as an "entry", but list the entry as dna - did not arrive. Never hurts to gather as much information as you can.
