I'm almost certain Villeneuve had a suspended ban in 1997 for something - not sure what though. IIRC, it was noted on the season review.
If I recall, he got in trouble for not slowing enough for a local yellow. At Suzuka, I think.

Probably like you I'm relying on memory, always risky, but hadn't he done much the same thing at the previous race as well, attracting what might otherwise have seemed a slightly heavy-handed penalty?

Well, Scheckter. . . if not officially, effectively forced into a cooling off, before returning.

Ah yes, the old memory...
So, I looked it up.
From Autocourse 1997-98:
Monza
...Jacques Villeneuve was given a one-race ban, suspended somewhat severely for a remarkable nine races, for failing to slow for yellow caution flags during the race morning warm-up...
Suzuka
Qualifying at Suzuka was effectively overshadowed by the controversy stemming from Saturday free practice when Jacques Villeneuve - and several others - passed Jos Verstappen's abandoned Tyrrell at undiminished speed under waved yellow flags.
In addition to Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Rubens Barrichello, Johnny Herbert and Ukyo Katayama were all summoned to the stewards...
Villeneuve, who had been handed a one-race ban suspended for nine races at Monza, was in deep trouble, with that suspension now being activated. He was thrown out of the Japanese GP. Frentzen received a one-race ban suspended until the fourth race of 1998, while Schumacher, Katayama, Herbert and Barrichello were admonished with one-race bans suspended to the end of the year.

In the meantime I wonder if Hunt (1977) or Lauda (1974) were fined or anything for hitting a marshall (both at Mosport I think). I can't imagine drivers getting away with that today.

From Autocourse 1997-98:
I've got that on a shelf right behind me but couldn't be arsed to look it up. As it sometimes said on my school reports, "Must try harder".

Weren't one or both of the Silverstone brothers banned in the 1980s?
Indeed.....and didn't Ken Stone appear on the scene soon afterwards

So who else was banned and for what reason?
Renault banned from European GP 2009.
Of course ban was lifted before the race.

He also received a suspended ban at Silverstone for following the safety car too closely after Katayama's start-line accident. I wonder if that offence has ever been noted before or since?
Oh, and hello to the Nostalgia Forum!
